Check your ballot through the official state or local election office that issued or processes it. If the tracker says “rejected,” or election officials contact you about a problem, contact that office immediately and follow its instructions for correcting the ballot. Tracking systems, status labels, cure options and deadlines vary by jurisdiction, so your election office—not a general guide—must confirm what applies to your ballot.

Find the official tracker for your ballot

Start at the state election website or the local election office for the county that issued or processes your ballot. State pages such as the Arizona Secretary of State’s ballot-status guidance can help you find the right tool. Vote.org also maintains a tracker directory, but use it as a way to locate election-office information, not as the authority on your ballot’s status.

  1. Open the state or local election office website identified on your ballot materials.
  2. Choose its mail-ballot or absentee-ballot tracking tool, then enter the requested details carefully.
  3. Read the status and any accompanying instructions. If the ballot is missing from the tool, or the status is unclear, contact the election office responsible for it.

Some offices offer email or text notifications in addition to a status page. Leon County, Florida, says its BallotTrax service can send notices when a ballot is mailed, received and counted. Los Angeles County offers Where’s My Ballot notifications and a separate status tool. If a notification and the tracker appear inconsistent or delayed, ask the election office to confirm the record.

Understand what the status means

Status labels and update timing are local. A ballot marked “received” may still need envelope or signature review; it does not necessarily mean the ballot has been accepted or counted. New Jersey’s tracker illustrates how much detail a local system may provide:

New Jersey status Meaning on the state’s tracker
N/A The county board has not yet received the ballot.
Received The ballot has arrived but remains subject to envelope-signature review.
Rejected The ballot was rejected.
Accepted The ballot was counted.

These definitions are specific to New Jersey. Its state guidance also cautions that county updates may not be immediate. Check periodically, and contact county election officials if the status has not changed or you need to know whether action is still possible. Do not treat a missing online record or a delay by itself as proof that a ballot was rejected or lost.

What to do if a ballot is rejected

  1. Contact the responsible election office promptly. Use the office named by the tracker or your ballot materials. Ask what the displayed status means, what defect was identified and whether a correction is still allowed.
  2. Get the exact cure instructions. Ask which form and supporting documents are required, how they may be submitted, and the deadline for this election. Do not assume a fix available in another county or state applies to you.
  3. Submit the correction using an approved method. Follow the office’s instructions exactly, including any requirements for identification, signature certification or delivery.
  4. Keep proof of submission, if available, and check the status again. Use the official tracker or contact the office to verify that the cure arrived and learn whether the ballot was accepted. There is no universal confirmation schedule.

Not every rejection is curable, and the permitted fix depends on the problem and local law. New Jersey says voters may cure a missing or non-matching signature through voter certification. In Leon County, Florida, voters whose signatures are missing or mismatched are instructed to submit a Vote-by-Mail Ballot Cure Affidavit and a photocopy of identification. Leon County’s cited instructions set a 5 p.m. Thursday-after-Election-Day deadline for that signature cure. That deadline and procedure apply to the county’s stated process; they are not national rules.

New Jersey describes voter notification by email, phone call or letter, alongside county-level status updates. Do not rely on receiving a notice before acting: check the tracker and contact the election office as soon as you see a rejection or learn of a possible defect.

Check the return deadline, delivery options and postage

Before sending a ballot or cure, confirm whether the applicable deadline is based on the postmark or when the election office receives it. USAGov advises voters to check which rule applies. The office may also allow a ballot to be returned by drop box or in person; permitted options and locations vary.

The United States Postal Service recommends that domestic, nonmilitary voters who mail a completed ballot do so before Election Day and at least one week before the deadline by which it must be received. USPS notes that some states recommend more time. For a postmark dated on the day you mail the ballot, USPS says you can present it at a Postal Service retail counter and request a free manual postmark.

Los Angeles County provides one example of a local receipt rule: it says it counts ballots postmarked by Election Day and received within seven days, and recommends mailing seven days early. Do not apply that rule to another jurisdiction; check the instructions for your own election.

Follow the ballot’s return-envelope instructions to determine whether postage is needed. USPS says to affix appropriate postage if election officials did not provide a prepaid envelope. Leon County says its return postage is prepaid, illustrating why voters should check their own materials rather than assume stamps are always required.

Why signature notices deserve quick attention

A signature issue can affect whether a ballot is counted, but the rules and available corrections depend on the jurisdiction. A 2023 report by the USPS Office of Inspector General said more than 120,000 mail ballots were rejected for missing or mismatched voter signatures in the 2018 general election. The report also said 18 states allowed voters to attempt to cure some ballot problems, such as signature issues. These are historical findings about the 2018 election and the report’s research, not current rejection rates or a verified count of states’ present-day laws.
