The remote should pair automatically after you insert its batteries; if it does not, use the Home-button pairing steps below.
Before you start
Have the Fire TV Stick 4K and its remote, the included batteries and power components, a television with an available HDMI port, your Wi-Fi name and password, and your Amazon sign-in details ready. Amazon has separate instructions for the 2nd and 3rd Generation Fire TV Stick 4K, so check the generation and use the matching power directions.
Set up the Fire TV Stick 4K
- Insert the remote batteries. Open the battery compartment and install the batteries according to the markings and cover instructions.
- Connect the Stick to HDMI. Plug it into an available HDMI port on the television. If nearby cables, a recessed port area, or wall placement makes the connection difficult, use a compatible HDMI extender. Amazon says an extender may help when the rear-panel pocket is smaller than 4.5 inches, cables crowd the area, or the TV sits close to the wall with rear-facing HDMI ports. It is optional if the Stick fits comfortably. Amazon’s 3rd Generation setup instructions
- Connect power for your generation.
- 2nd Generation: Amazon’s box contents list a power cable and adapter. Connect the cable and plug the adapter into a wall outlet; Amazon’s 2nd Generation instructions say not to connect the USB cable directly to the television. 2nd Generation setup instructions
- 3rd Generation: Amazon describes connecting the included short USB-C power cable to the television’s USB-A port. If the cable cannot reach or the Stick reports insufficient power, try a USB-C cable and a 5V 1A adapter plugged into a wall outlet. Check whether you already have compatible equipment before purchasing anything. 3rd Generation setup instructions
- Select the correct HDMI input. Turn on the television and use its remote to choose the HDMI input where the Stick is connected. If the screen remains blank, confirm that the selected input matches the port in use.
- Connect to Wi-Fi. Follow the on-screen prompt to scan the QR code with a phone, or select your network with the Fire TV remote and enter its password.
- Register the device with Amazon. Use the on-screen QR code or enter the activation code at the Amazon address shown on the television. If you created your Amazon account without a password and the 3rd Generation setup asks for one, Amazon says to press Back at the password prompt, then enter the displayed verification code at the Amazon address shown on screen. 3rd Generation setup instructions
- Complete the remaining prompts. Follow any instructions for configuring the Alexa Voice Remote to control TV or soundbar functions where supported.
Pair the remote if it does not connect automatically
After batteries are inserted and the television is on, the remote should pair automatically and show a confirmation on screen. If it does not, try these steps in order:
- Keep the remote within 10 feet (3 m) of the Fire TV device. Hold Home until the on-screen pairing prompt appears; this takes about 10 seconds.
- If pairing still fails, remove the batteries, wait 30 seconds, reinstall them, and hold Home again.
- Try a fresh pair of alkaline batteries.
- Reset the remote by holding Left, Menu, and Back together for 12 seconds. Then press Home to pair it again.
- If the remote still will not pair, unplug the Fire TV device, wait five seconds, reconnect it, and try pairing again.
Amazon also describes holding Home for 10 seconds as an initial fallback in its 3rd Generation setup instructions. See the complete sequence in Amazon’s Fire TV remote-pairing guide. If seven controllers are already paired, remove one before adding another. The Fire TV mobile app is another way to control the device while troubleshooting.

If setup gets stuck
The Stick will not fit comfortably behind the TV
Try an appropriate HDMI extender if the television’s port area is cramped or obstructed. Amazon lists an optional 4K HDMI extender for the 3rd Generation; an extender you already have may be suitable if compatible. Amazon’s 3rd Generation setup instructions
The 3rd Generation reports insufficient power
Check that the USB-C cable is firmly connected. If the supplied cable cannot reach the TV’s USB port, or an on-screen message reports insufficient power, Amazon recommends trying a USB-C cable with a 5V 1A wall adapter. Do not apply this 3rd Generation power direction to the 2nd Generation, whose setup page specifies the included adapter at a wall outlet. 3rd Generation instructions · 2nd Generation instructions
