Some of your current smart home devices will work with Apple Home—but compatibility depends on the exact model and its supported features. Check for Apple Home or HomeKit support, a supported Matter category, or a manufacturer-documented bridge for that specific device. Wi-Fi, Zigbee, Thread, or Matter branding alone does not guarantee that an accessory will appear in Home.

How to check whether a specific device works

  1. Find the exact model number. A brand or product-family name is not enough: different models can have different compatibility and feature support.
  2. Check the maker’s current support page or manual. Look for Apple Home, HomeKit, or Apple Home compatibility for that model. Apple recommends checking the manual for required hardware, software updates, or extra setup in the manufacturer’s app (Apple’s accessory setup guidance).
  3. If it uses Matter, confirm its category and features. Apple lists supported Matter categories, but that does not guarantee every product in a category—or every advanced control on a product—will work.
  4. If it is not directly compatible, look for a documented bridge. Confirm the manufacturer names both your accessory model and the particular bridge as supported, and check which controls the bridge makes available in Apple Home.
  5. Check network and hub requirements. Thread, Wi-Fi band, software version, and home-hub needs can change whether setup works and which functions are available.

The three routes into Apple Home

HomeKit accessories

Accessories designed for Apple HomeKit can be added through the Home app’s setup flow. HomeKit is Apple’s framework for coordinating and controlling supported accessories from multiple vendors (Apple Home for developers).

Matter accessories

Apple supports Matter. A supported Matter accessory can be added in the Home app or a HomeKit-based app, and then used through Apple Home surfaces such as the Home app and Siri (Apple Home for developers). Apple currently lists these Matter accessory categories:

  • Air purifiers, fans, lights, outlets, and switches
  • Blinds and shades
  • Bridges
  • Door locks, robot vacuum cleaners, and thermostats
  • Sensors for air quality, ambient light, contact, humidity, motion, and temperature

That category list is not a model-by-model compatibility guarantee. Confirm that Apple Home supports the specific product and the features you need.

Manufacturer bridges

A bridge may connect selected existing accessories to Apple Home, but there is no universal bridge that turns every older device into a compatible one. Apple recognizes Matter bridges as a category; the accessory maker still needs to document support for your exact device and bridge combination (Apple Home for developers; Apple’s accessory setup guidance).

What can affect setup and everyday use

Thread and home hubs

Thread accessories need an appropriate Thread-enabled hub or compatible Thread border router, depending on the equipment. Apple’s Thread setup guidance names Apple TV 4K, HomePod (2nd generation), HomePod mini, and compatible third-party Thread border routers; check the exact hub generation and accessory maker’s current requirements (Apple’s Thread setup guide).

For Matter, Apple says an iPhone running iOS 18 or later can add and control accessories in Home without a home hub, though Apple recommends a hub for the best experience (Apple’s accessory setup guidance). Local pairing and control are not the same as hub-enabled capabilities: remote access, automations, and notifications may have additional requirements. Check Apple’s current compatibility and setup guidance for the function you intend to use (Apple Home for developers; Apple’s Thread setup guide).

Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and manufacturer setup

Pairing guidance asks you to enable Bluetooth. Some accessories do not support 5 GHz Wi-Fi; if setup reports that the network is incompatible, Apple advises checking a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network (Apple’s accessory setup guidance). A maker’s app, a firmware update, or extra hardware may also be required before the accessory can be added or respond correctly in Home.

Matter accessories paired in another app

If you first paired a Matter accessory in another app, Apple’s instructions describe generating a pairing code in that app and then adding the accessory to Home. Matter pairings are stored using iCloud Keychain and can be managed in iOS Settings (Apple’s Thread and Matter setup guide).

Choosing between a replacement, Matter device, or bridge

Compare options against your exact accessory and the way you use it. A replacement may be simpler than keeping unsupported hardware; a bridge can be useful when the maker explicitly supports your existing model. Matter is another route when both the product category and the specific device’s Home features meet your needs.

meross Smart Plug 15A, Works with Apple HomeKit, Voice & APP Control 4 Pack
  • Remote Control: To enable HomeKit remote control, you need a HomePod, an Apple TV 4K, Apple TV HD, or an iPad. Set any of these Apple devices in your house as a HomeKit bridge and connect it to your home 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network. Keep in mind that once your HomeKit bridge is set up, it has to be kept online. If it is powered off or disconnected from the Wi-Fi, it will fail to respond when you intend to control the device remotely.
  • Voice Control: You can control your devices hands free, just give voice commands to turn on/off the connected devices. Compatible with Apple HomeKit, Apple Watch, Siri, Carplay, Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant.
  • Compact Size: Smart plug occupies only one socket, the device allows you to stack two mini smart plugs in the same outlet, which is convenient and practical.
  • Schedule: You can schedule connected devices to turn on and off automatically by smart plugs. Save energy when lights are not needed or left on by accident. Sunrise and sunset setting are supported.
  • Quality: The meross Smart outlet is made of PC flame retardant material, and has been approved for safety and quality assurance. Certified by ETL and FCC, it supports home appliance up to 15A.
Option What to verify Main trade-off
Directly compatible replacement Exact model is listed for Apple Home or HomeKit; the controls you need are exposed; network and hub requirements are clear. Requires replacing the existing device, but may avoid relying on an additional bridge.
Matter device Apple supports its accessory category; the exact model supports the features you need; confirm Wi-Fi or Thread requirements and setup steps. Matter provides a route into Apple Home, but the label alone does not establish feature-level support.
Manufacturer bridge The maker lists both your exact accessory and the bridge; confirm which controls and automations are exposed, plus required firmware and network setup. May preserve selected existing devices, but compatibility is specific to the supported product-and-bridge combination.

  1. Read the message closely. For “accessory is not supported,” check the maker’s app for a firmware update and verify the exact model’s Apple Home support. For “network is incompatible,” check whether the accessory requires 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi.
  2. Confirm prerequisites. Enable Bluetooth, check whether the product needs a manufacturer-app setup, and verify any required bridge, hub, or Thread border router.
  3. Update and restart. Update the accessory and relevant apps or software; restart the accessory and bridge if one is used. Apple recommends these troubleshooting steps for accessories that cannot be added or are unresponsive (Apple’s accessory setup guidance; Apple’s unresponsive accessory guidance).
  4. Ask the manufacturer about the exact combination. If it still will not pair or respond, provide the maker with the model, firmware, network setup, and any bridge or hub involved.
