After a trade-in, your device may be inspected and sent for reuse or recycling; if it is in working condition, refurbishment and resale are also possible. There is no guaranteed destination for every device. The outcome depends on the provider, location, model, and condition, and most programs do not publish a breakdown of what happens to each item.
Where does a trade-in phone or other device go?
It depends on the program. Apple’s U.S. Trade In page says, “When we receive your device, it will be thoroughly inspected and assessed for reuse or recycling.” That describes Apple’s stated process, not a promise that a particular device will follow either route or a published split between them. Apple Trade In
Reuse can include refurbishment and resale. The Associated Press reports that working electronics may be refurbished and resold, while devices that are beyond reuse go through recycling. That broad reporting does not establish what a specific provider does with your trade-in. Associated Press report
Do trade-in devices get resold or recycled?
Either can happen, but the device’s route is not certain from the fact that it was accepted for trade-in. Condition, model, program rules, and local options may affect whether it can be reused, recycled, or handled another way. The available sources do not provide a dated, provider-wide percentage for devices refurbished, resold, reused for parts, or recycled, so claims about the share taking each route would be unsupported.

A device that does not qualify for trade-in credit may still have a recycling option. Apple says devices ineligible for credit can be recycled at no cost through its program; check the terms for your own provider and location rather than assuming the same offer applies everywhere. Apple Trade In
What happens if the device’s condition differs from your description?
Some providers inspect the item before finalizing the transaction. In Apple’s U.S. online program, the company checks whether the device matches the condition described by the customer; if it does not, the credit offered may change. Review the provider’s inspection and revised-offer terms before sending or handing over your device. Apple Trade In
How Apple’s U.S. online trade-in process works
Apple’s current U.S. FAQ says its online process generally takes two to three weeks. Apple also says it needs to receive the old device within 14 days after you receive the new one. These are Apple-specific process estimates and deadlines, not timings for trade-ins generally; check the current terms for your transaction. Apple Trade In
Apple says it may provide a prepaid kit or drop-off instructions. When it sends a kit, packaging materials and instructions are included. Follow the directions supplied for your trade-in rather than assuming another provider uses the same return method or deadline. Apple Trade In

How to protect your data before handing over a device
- Back up what you need. Save important information before you begin. Apple’s trade-in terms make the customer responsible for keeping a backup.
- Sign out of accounts and services. Follow the device manufacturer’s current instructions so the device is no longer linked to your accounts.
- Erase the device. Use the manufacturer’s instructions to remove your personal data before sending or surrendering it. Apple’s terms place responsibility for deleting personal data on the customer. Apple Trade In terms
- Follow the provider’s return instructions. Use the required packaging or drop-off method and meet the stated deadline. Do not rely on the provider to erase the device as a substitute for preparing it yourself.
Apple’s regional legal terms say a vendor may reset a received device if personal data is immediately obvious. That is a limited statement about Apple’s process, not a reason to leave data on a device; erase it before handoff. Apple Trade In terms

What to check before choosing a trade-in route
- Provider and location: Confirm that the program accepts your device and applies in your region.
- Condition and eligibility: Check how the provider assesses condition, whether a quote can change after inspection, and what happens if the item does not qualify for credit.
- Return method and timing: Compare the program’s mail-in or in-store instructions, packaging requirements, and deadlines.
- Stated destination: Look for what the provider says about reuse, refurbishment, resale, or recycling. Without comparable published figures, a provider’s stated process cannot establish that it resells more or recycles less than another.
