Clean clip-on earbuds with the method approved for your exact model, and keep liquid away from charging contacts. Use a soft cloth or swab only where the manual allows it; treat sound and microphone openings gently, and let anything damp dry fully at room temperature before docking or charging.
Before you start: check the exact model’s instructions
Clip-on earbuds are not all made or sealed the same way. A cleaning method permitted for one model may damage another, and the case may have different care instructions from the earbuds. Check the owner’s manual or manufacturer’s care guide for both parts before using a damp cloth, wipe, or brush.
The model examples below show why that distinction matters: Sony’s LinkBuds Clip guide permits specific water-based methods for some surfaces, while Bose’s Ultra Open Earbuds manual gives its own directions. Neither set of instructions is universal.
A safe cleaning sequence
- Remove loose surface dirt. Use a soft, dry cloth or cotton swab only if the manufacturer permits it. Do not start with a wet wipe unless the manual permits its ingredients and moisture level.
- Clean openings only as directed. Use the approved tool gently across the opening’s surface. Do not insert a brush deeply or push debris inward. Do not blow into or vacuum a port where the manufacturer warns against it.
- Clean charging contacts dry. If the manual allows, use a dry, soft cloth or cotton swab. Keep liquid away from charging contacts and ports.
- Wipe the case carefully. Clean its exterior and accessible recesses only with the method approved for that model. Avoid flooding the case or assuming it is water-resistant.
- Dry before docking or charging. If a part was dampened, wipe away moisture and leave it to dry thoroughly at room temperature. Do not charge or return damp earbuds to the case.
What the manufacturer instructions say for two models

Protect charging contacts and ports from moisture
Moisture or debris on a charging point can interfere with charging and may lead to corrosion. Sony specifically warns against charging the LinkBuds Clip when liquid such as water or sweat, or foreign matter such as dust, is on the case’s USB-C port or the headset’s charging port. If either gets wet, Sony says to clean it according to its instructions, wipe off moisture with a soft, dry cloth, and leave it to dry at room temperature before charging. Do not infer that a case is water-resistant because an earbud has a moisture rating. Follow the case’s own instructions, and avoid putting a wet earbud into it.

Wipe only accessible case surfaces and recesses using the permitted method; do not pour or spray cleaner into the case. Bose recommends storing its Ultra Open Earbuds in the case and closing the lid to help keep debris out. Methods to avoid unless your manual explicitly permits them
- Do not assume alcohol, solvents, abrasives, or household cleaning solutions are safe; manufacturer restrictions differ by model.
- Do not use sharp picks or push debris into openings. Deep brushing can drive dirt farther inside.
- Do not use compressed-air dusters as a general cleaning trick. Sony warns that debris may enter sound output holes, and Bose warns against blowing air into its microphone ports.
- Do not vacuum openings where the manufacturer prohibits it, as Bose does for the Ultra Open Earbuds’ microphone ports.
- Do not use a universal earbud-cleaning kit as a substitute for the model’s care instructions. Ordinary cotton swabs or a soft brush are suitable only where the manual permits them.
