Red light masks may modestly improve some visible signs of facial aging, particularly wrinkles, but results depend on the specific device and how it is used. Evidence for one mask does not establish that every mask works, and FDA status applies to individual devices and indications—not to the whole product category.
What red light masks do
Red light therapy, also called photobiomodulation, uses red or near-infrared light. At-home devices include masks, panels, and handheld wands. Their wavelengths, output, fit, and treatment schedules can differ, so evidence from one device or protocol cannot automatically be applied to another.
The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) says research suggests possible changes in fine lines and wrinkles, rough-feeling skin, dark spots, redness, and loose skin. The strength of evidence varies, and the AAD says more research is needed to establish safe and effective at-home doses and optimal schedules. Its overview asks, “Does red light therapy live up to the claims?” The practical answer is that some results are promising, but broad promises are not established for every mask. Read the AAD’s red light therapy guidance.
What wrinkle studies show—and what they do not
A 2017 comparison of red and white LED treatment
A randomized, double-blind comparative trial published in Dermatologic Surgery enrolled 52 adult women. Participants received daily treatment for 12 weeks with either 660 nm red LED light or broad-spectrum white LED light. Wrinkle measurements improved from baseline in both groups, but blinded dermatologist assessments found no significant difference between the groups. That supports a possible change over time in the studied participants; it does not show that red light outperformed white light or that all consumer masks will produce the same outcome. See the 2017 trial record.

A 2025 home-mask study
A randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled study published in Medicine on February 14, 2025, involved 60 Asian-descent participants aged 30–65 at two institutions. It evaluated a home mask using 630 nm LED and 850 nm IRED light, with a reported maximum output of 10 mW/cm² ±20% for each source. The publication reports temporary improvement in crow’s feet. Because the study tested a particular device, population, and endpoint, it is not proof of a lasting effect or of equivalent results from other masks. Read the 2025 study.
The AAD also summarizes a study in which 90 patients received eight red-light facial treatments over four weeks, with more than 90% reporting some improvement. That is an AAD-reported study summary, not evidence that every home mask will produce that response. See the AAD overview.

Acne is a separate claim
Evidence and device indications for acne should not be conflated with wrinkle treatment. The AAD says visible-light devices can treat pimples, but they do not treat blackheads, whiteheads, cysts, or nodules. FDA’s over-the-counter powered light-based device classification describes a specific red-and-blue-light device type for mild-to-moderate acne vulgaris; it is not a general authorization for every red-light mask or every acne claim. Read the AAD’s guidance on lasers and lights for acne and check the FDA device classification.
What FDA status means for a mask
FDA records are specific to a device and its stated indication. The record for 510(k) K200983 covers a facial mask in the light-based over-the-counter wrinkle-reduction category. FDA received the submission on April 14, 2020, and issued a “Substantially Equivalent” decision on July 14, 2021. This decision is not a blanket endorsement of all masks, nor a guarantee of a particular user’s results. View FDA’s K200983 record.

FDA’s January 2023 photobiomodulation-device guidance describes recommendations for non-clinical testing, clinical studies, and labeling to support premarket submissions. FDA labels it draft and non-binding; it is not a consumer treatment protocol or a final rule. Read the draft guidance. FDA warning letters to specific sellers and mask makers also illustrate why marketing claims should not be assumed to be cleared claims: Vevazz LLC (2019) and Ostar Beauty Sci-Tech Co Ltd. (2023).

- Indication: Is the device intended for wrinkles, acne, or another specific concern? Evidence for one use does not establish another.
- Device-specific evidence: Does a study evaluate this model, or is the seller relying on findings from a different device?
- Technical details: Look for stated wavelengths and light output, while recognizing that a listed number alone does not prove effectiveness.
- Protocol: Follow the model’s stated session length, frequency, and course of treatment; research has not established one optimal schedule for all at-home devices.
- Fit, coverage, and eye-safety instructions: Check the manufacturer’s directions for the exact model, including any precautions and restrictions.
- Returns and warranty: These affect the practical risk of buying a device whose results may be modest or uncertain.
The AAD discusses precautions for at-home red light therapy, but the details should be taken from its current guidance and the instructions for the specific device rather than inferred from another mask. Review the AAD’s current advice before use.
