For most people who already own Pokémon Legends: Z-A on Switch, the Switch 2 upgrade is worth considering if smoother motion, sharper visuals, or faster loading matter to you. Nintendo Life’s November 2025 comparison reported a rise from mostly 30 frames per second on Switch to a consistent 60 fps on Switch 2, along with higher resolutions and faster loading. It found no exclusive gameplay content in the upgraded edition, so the upgrade improves how the game runs rather than adding a new reason to play it.
What changes in the Switch 2 Edition?
Nintendo describes the Switch 2 Edition as having improved performance, enhanced resolution, and smoother frame rates. Its U.S. product page does not promise a specific frame-rate target.

Nintendo Life’s comparison, published November 3, 2025, gives a more detailed account. These are the publication’s observations, not official specifications or a guarantee for every scene or software version:
| Area | Original Switch version | Switch 2 Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Frame rate | Mostly 30 fps, with occasional drops | Consistent 60 fps, with minimal drops |
| Resolution | 1080p docked; 720p handheld | Upscaled 2160p docked; 1080p handheld |
| Visual detail | More noticeable pop-in and slow-loading textures | Improved textures, color, shading, and shadows; pop-in is reduced but remains |
| Loading | Slower | Faster |
Nintendo Life’s October 17, 2025 review of the original Switch version described performance as relatively consistent around 30 fps, while noting repeated stutter in some docked camera cuts. Those are reviewer observations from the European version, not universal results.

Does the Switch 2 Edition add new content?
Nintendo Life’s comparison found no gameplay features or content exclusive to either version. The Switch 2 Edition is a technical upgrade, not a story expansion or new mode. If you are considering paying again because you expect more missions or other new gameplay, this upgrade is not that purchase.
How much does the upgrade cost, and how do you get it?
The U.S. Best Buy listing showed the upgrade pack at $9.99 when checked in 2026. Nintendo Life also listed $9.99 in the U.S. and £7.99 in the U.K. at the time of its November 2025 comparison. These are market-specific prices, and retailer or eShop prices can change; check your local listing before buying.

These figures apply to Japan and are not U.S. prices.
- On a Switch 2, look for the Pokémon Legends: Z-A upgrade pack in Nintendo eShop, Nintendo Store, or at a participating retailer.
- Choose the upgrade pack for your region and confirm that it applies to your existing Switch game. Nintendo Support says owners of either a physical or digital copy can buy it.
- Play the upgraded version on Switch 2 to use the enhancements. Your original game remains playable on the original Switch, but the Switch 2 Edition enhancements are available only on Switch 2.
Who should buy the upgrade?
| Your situation | How the upgrade fits |
|---|---|
| You notice frame-rate changes or want clearer motion in real-time battles | More compelling: Nintendo Life reported 60 fps on Switch 2 versus mostly 30 fps on Switch. |
| You mostly play docked on a large screen and want a sharper image | More compelling: the comparison reported higher resolution and improved visual detail on Switch 2. |
| You are satisfied with the original version’s performance and image quality | Harder to recommend: the comparison identifies no exclusive gameplay content. |
| You expect a story, mode, or other content expansion | Not a match: the reported differences are technical. |
| You play mostly handheld and are unsure whether the visual change matters to you | Consider your tolerance for the original version’s lower reported resolution and occasional performance issues; the value depends on how noticeable those are in your play. |
If you have not bought the game at all, the full Switch 2 Edition is a separate option. The upgrade pack is the relevant purchase for an existing Switch-game owner. The all-in-one Switch 2 package with the Mega Dimension add-on listed by the official Pokémon Japan page for October 29, 2026, is a distinct full-game-plus-DLC package—not the upgrade pack and not required for the performance enhancements.
