Open the Pause Menu > Settings in Story Mode or GTA Online to adjust camera, control, and display options. For vehicle controls, get into a vehicle first; aim settings in Online can be inherited from Story Mode or a lobby host, so check your session before changing them repeatedly.

Open the settings menu

Rockstar says GTAV settings can be changed from the Pause Menu in either Story Mode or Online. Open Pause Menu > Settings, then select a category such as Controls, Camera, or Display. The exact labels and available options can vary by platform and edition; Rockstar’s support guidance does not provide a complete inventory for every version.

Change camera perspective

Use the perspective-toggle input to switch between first- and third-person views. Rockstar lists these default inputs:

  • PC: V
  • PlayStation 5 or PlayStation 4: Touchpad
  • Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One: Select

These are defaults, not guaranteed inputs for a remapped control setup. If the toggle does not respond, check the Controls settings for your current bindings. Rockstar’s supported-platform guidance for this first-person perspective switch covers the platforms listed above.

View and adjust vehicle controls

The controls display changes according to whether you are on foot or in a vehicle. To see vehicle controls, enter a vehicle before opening the Pause Menu settings; otherwise, you may only see the on-foot configuration. Rockstar also warns that changes made to controls while in a vehicle affect on-foot controls, and changes made on foot affect vehicle controls.

  1. Get into a vehicle.
  2. Open Pause Menu > Settings and select the controls category.
  3. Review the vehicle configuration shown, then adjust the relevant binding or option.

Check the source of GTA Online aim settings

Online aim preferences do not always come solely from a setting changed in the current session. Rockstar says aim settings are imported from Story Mode when an Online session starts. Joining another player’s multiplayer lobby can also make your settings default to the host’s selection.

Grand Theft Auto V - Xbox 360 (Renewed)
  • The biggest, most dynamic and most diverse open world ever created and now packed with layers of new detail.
  • Grand Theft Auto V blends storytelling and gameplay in new ways as players repeatedly jump in and out of the lives of the game's three lead characters, playing all sides of the game's interwoven story.
  • Grand Theft Auto V also comes with Grand Theft Auto Online, the dynamic and ever-evolving Grand Theft Auto universe for multiple players.

If your aim behavior changes, check whether you joined someone else’s lobby and whether the preference is set as intended in Story Mode. Rockstar advises going offline to modify the aim setting and suggests creating lobbies to avoid settings changing when joining multiplayer lobbies. See Rockstar’s instructions for changing aim settings in GTA Online.

Use kilometers instead of miles

Change Measurement System to Metric or Imperial. Rockstar says this setting saves automatically; choosing Metric changes the measurement system used in GTAV. See Rockstar’s guidance on adjusting GTAV settings.

Bring cut-off interface elements back on screen

Adjust Safezone Size to change how content sits near the screen edges. This can help when text or interface elements are clipped on a television. It changes screen-edge framing, not measurement units.
