Spoiler note: The comparison below discusses where Rebirth’s story reaches, including the Forgotten Capital, but avoids detailing major plot revelations. Rebirth is not a scene-for-scene remake of the entire original game: it is the second entry in a three-game reimagining, following Final Fantasy VII Remake.
How the remake project divides the original story
The original Final Fantasy VII is the baseline for the remake project, but its story is being reworked across three standalone games rather than retold in one release. Director Tetsuya Nomura described the plan this way: “We have announced that the Final Fantasy VII remake project will be a trilogy and that each entry will be a standalone game in its own right.” (PlayStation Blog interview.)
Final Fantasy VII Remake covers the Midgar portion through the party’s escape and expands on events there. Rebirth picks up after that escape, follows the party across multiple regions, and reaches the Forgotten Capital. That means Rebirth is neither a full remake of the original nor a direct continuation of the 1997 game: it is the next installment in a retelling whose scope and sequence differ. Story coverage and sequence
Rebirth moves the story beyond Midgar into the wider journey. Not every location appears in the same order as in the original: Nomura said the route has been rearranged, and Wutai is being held for the next game rather than appearing in Rebirth. (PlayStation Blog developer interview.)

Spoilers for Rebirth’s endpoint: The game’s portion of the story ends at the Forgotten Capital. The destination is a meaningful point of comparison with the original, but reaching it does not mean Rebirth has adapted the rest of the original game.
World scale and exploration
Where Remake focused on Midgar, Rebirth is built around travel through a broad world of distinct regions. Director Naoki Hamaguchi described rebuilding a large world map with towns and dungeons, alongside stories, battles and minigames. This is a change in structure and scale, not by itself proof that Rebirth’s world is better or more “open” in quality. The official descriptions establish the broader regional journey and available activities; whether exploration feels rewarding is a matter of player judgment.
Combat and playable characters
Square Enix describes Rebirth’s combat as a blend of action and strategy, with new synergy skills and abilities. These additions build on the remake project’s combat approach, but their presence does not establish that one system is objectively superior. (Square Enix product page.)

Red XIII, who accompanied the party in Remake, becomes an official playable party member in Rebirth, according to Nomura. This is a concrete change to the party roster and how players participate in battles. (PlayStation Blog developer interview.)
Optional activities
Rebirth adds optional stories, battles, minigames and opportunities to revisit earlier regions. Hamaguchi characterized the volume of side content as “nearly double” that of the main quest. Progression between games
Do not expect to carry a Remake character build into Rebirth. Hamaguchi said the games are balanced independently and levels and abilities do not transfer, though eligible players may receive limited bonuses for prior-game save data. Square Enix’s FAQ gives summon materia as examples of bonuses available for qualifying Remake save data on PS5 or PC; these rewards are not an imported level, equipment or ability setup. No. Square Enix describes Rebirth as a standalone game for fans and newcomers, and says it includes an in-game recap video for Remake. A newcomer can start with Rebirth, but playing Remake first is a sensible choice if you want to follow the ongoing plot and understand the characters’ relationships with less reliance on a recap.
