Start with three basics: gentle cleansing, a moisturizer your skin tolerates, and daytime sunscreen. Add only one new product at a time, test it on a small area first, and stop using it if it causes a reaction. These steps can lower the risk of irritation, but they cannot guarantee that a product will suit everyone.
A simple routine to start with
More products can mean more opportunities for irritation—and make it harder to identify what caused a problem. Begin with a gentle, non-abrasive cleanser, a moisturizer, and sunscreen for outdoor use. Keep optional products out until this basic routine feels comfortable and consistent.
Choose products for your skin type and needs, but treat labels as clues, not guarantees. A product described as gentle, natural, or hypoallergenic can still bother an individual.
What to do in the morning and evening
Morning
- Cleanse if needed. Use a gentle cleanser without scrubbing. Depending on your circumstances, dry or sensitive skin may do better with cleansing only in the evening.
- Moisturize. Use a moisturizer you tolerate. For sensitive skin, the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends fragrance-free products; fragrance can trigger irritation or allergic reactions. AAD skincare guidance
- Protect exposed skin outdoors. Choose a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Reapply every two hours and after swimming or sweating. AAD sun-safety guidance
Evening
- Cleanse gently and pat your skin dry rather than scrubbing.
- Apply prescribed medication or treatment as directed. AAD’s general order is to apply medication or treatment after cleansing. Do not change a prescription schedule on your own. AAD guidance on product order
- Moisturize. Avoid adding other optional products until the routine is comfortable.
How to add a new product cautiously

Before using a product broadly, AAD recommends a home test: apply it to a quarter-sized spot, such as the inner arm or elbow crease, twice daily for seven to 10 days. Leave it on for the normal length of time; for a rinse-off product, follow its directions or keep it on for five minutes. If the test area stays clear, that may help predict whether you will have a negative reaction, but it does not prove the product will never cause one or that it is safe for everyone. What to do if a product causes a reaction
If the test area becomes red, itchy, or swollen, wash the product off and do not use it again. For temporary discomfort, AAD suggests a cool compress or petroleum jelly. Seek dermatology care for severe symptoms, symptoms that do not improve with these measures, or reactions that keep returning. If you cannot identify the trigger, a dermatologist can assess the problem and may recommend medical patch testing for suspected allergic contact dermatitis. A home test is not allergy testing. Product labels and ingredients to approach carefully
- Look for “fragrance-free.” “Unscented” does not necessarily mean fragrance-free: an unscented product may contain fragrance that masks another smell. AAD specifically raises this caution for eczema-prone skin. AAD product-testing guidance
- Do not stack active ingredients just because they are popular. Retinol and glycolic acid can irritate, particularly on sensitive skin. Add products cautiously rather than starting several actives together. AAD product-testing guidance

How to choose among cleansers, moisturizers, and sunscreens
There is no single best product for everyone. Compare options by the job they need to do, formulation, feel, and whether you tolerate them. For sunscreen, check that the label says broad-spectrum, SPF 30 or higher, and water-resistant if you will be outdoors.
A water-resistant label means the sunscreen meets its labeled level for 40 or 80 minutes in water; it does not mean waterproof. Follow the reapplication directions, including after swimming or sweating. AAD sunscreen-label guidance
