No. Square Enix says FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH is a standalone adventure for newcomers as well as returning players, and its in-game menu includes a recap of FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE. Playing Remake first is still the best way to experience the story in sequence; if you want to start with Rebirth, watch the built-in recap first.
What “standalone” means for Rebirth
Square Enix describes the remake project as three distinct, standalone parts and identifies Rebirth as the second game. It picks up after Cloud and his companions leave Midgar, so it continues a story that began in Remake. “Standalone” means you can begin with Rebirth without having played the earlier game; it does not mean the two stories are unrelated. Square Enix’s official FAQ says the game welcomes fans and newcomers alike.

Square Enix says the recap is intended both for players seeking a refresher and for people planning to begin with Rebirth. The publisher does not describe it as a replacement for playing the earlier installment. Square Enix’s recap-video announcement explains its purpose.
Do you need the original Final Fantasy VII or another series game?
No. Square Enix says each Final Fantasy game has its own story, and its FAQ says you can start with Rebirth without playing another entry in the series. For the specific story leading into Rebirth, the relevant choice is whether to play Remake or use the in-game recap—not whether to complete the original game or other series titles.

FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE is one way to play the preceding installment; it is optional, not a prerequisite. The recap is the no-purchase catch-up option if you already have Rebirth.
