Spoilers for FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE and FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH. REBIRTH follows Cloud and his companions after they escape Midgar, pursuing Sephiroth across the planet and reaching the Forgotten Capital. It does not retell the entire 1997 FINAL FANTASY VII: it is the second part of a three-game reimagining, with a reordered journey, expanded roles for some characters, and a story that makes uncertainty about fate part of its subject.
Where Rebirth fits in the story
The original FINAL FANTASY VII tells a story that begins in Midgar and continues well beyond it. The remake project divides that larger narrative across three games. FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE focuses on the Midgar portion; REBIRTH picks up after the party leaves the city and follows its pursuit of Sephiroth, ending at the Forgotten Capital.
That endpoint matters when comparing the two versions: REBIRTH adapts a substantial middle stretch of the original adventure, not the complete original plot. Square Enix describes it as the second installment of a three-part reimagining and identifies the Forgotten Capital as the journey’s culmination.
How the remake changes the original’s path
The locations do not come in the same order
RE BIRTH changes the order in which the party visits locations compared with the 1997 game. Director Tetsuya Nomura said in a PlayStation Blog interview that Wutai is not part of REBIRTH’s route and will be visited in the next installment. The route covered here instead leads to the Forgotten Capital.

The story folds in wider FINAL FANTASY VII lore
The trilogy draws on stories and lore from other works in the FINAL FANTASY VII universe, not just the 1997 game. Director Naoki Hamaguchi has also described bringing characters who were formerly optional—Yuffie among them—more closely into Cloud’s central party and its adventures. As a result, the remake’s scope includes both a retelling of familiar events and material connected to the wider series.
Why fate and the Whispers change the comparison
REMAKE introduced the Whispers as arbiters of fate and raised the possibility that established events might change. PlayStation’s guide characterizes REMAKE as largely faithful to the original while also breaking from its established events at key points. REBIRTH carries that uncertainty forward: the question of whether events will follow the old story is part of the narrative, rather than a guarantee that the original’s sequence will simply repeat.

This premise does not, by itself, prove a particular explanation of the games as alternate timelines or settle how every difference works. It is safer to describe fate and possible changes as themes the games put on the table, rather than present one interpretation as confirmed fact.
How to talk about Rebirth’s ending
The firm story landmark is that REBIRTH reaches the Forgotten Capital, a major fate-bearing point in the narrative. Beyond that, separate what the game depicts from what characters say and from what viewers infer. The ending contains ambiguous imagery and character states; the official material cited here does not establish one definitive interpretation of every such image. Fan theories can be useful ways to discuss the uncertainty, but they should be labeled as theories rather than settled explanation.

Hamaguchi described the aim as preserving an authentic FINAL FANTASY VII feel while also creating a fresh experience. That balance helps explain why REBIRTH can revisit familiar story territory without following the original game’s route or treatment in every respect.
