For a first playthrough, either start with the original Final Fantasy VII or go straight to Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade. Then play Rebirth, followed by Final Fantasy VII Revelation when it releases. Crisis Core –Final Fantasy VII– Reunion is an optional prequel best saved until after the main story; you do not need to play every game or other Compilation title to follow the core sequence.
What order should I play the Final Fantasy 7 games in?
Choose one of these routes based on whether you want to experience the 1997 original before the newer remake series:
- Original-first: Final Fantasy VII (original) → Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade → Final Fantasy VII Rebirth → Final Fantasy VII Revelation when released.
- Remake-only: Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade → Final Fantasy VII Rebirth → Final Fantasy VII Revelation when released.
Square Enix identifies Intergrade as the first remake-series game, Rebirth as the second, and Revelation as the concluding third installment in its June 8, 2026 announcement. The first two are available; Revelation is planned for spring 2027 on PS5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, Windows, Steam, and Epic Games Store. The announcement does not establish a specific launch date or price.
Should I play the original FF7 before Remake?
You can start with either. The original-first route gives you the 1997 source game as context for the remake project; it is an editorial recommendation, not a mandatory order set by Square Enix. The Square Enix Final Fantasy Portal lists the original PlayStation release date as January 31, 1997.

If you want the newer remake presentation and would rather not begin with the original, start at Remake Intergrade. Both routes lead into Rebirth and then the planned Revelation. If you want to play the completed remake sequence all at once, you will need to wait for Revelation, which is not scheduled before spring 2027.
Should I play Crisis Core before FF7?
No—not for a first playthrough. Crisis Core –Final Fantasy VII– Reunion is a remaster of Crisis Core, stars Zack Fair, and begins seven years before Final Fantasy VII, according to Square Enix’s game page. Its earlier chronology does not make it the best starting point: playing it first can bring story revelations forward before the central story has had a chance to establish them.

Save Reunion until after the original or remake story if you want to explore Zack’s part of the wider narrative. Square Enix’s December 16, 2022 availability announcement lists PlayStation 5 and 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S and One, and Steam; check the current store listing for the edition and platform you plan to use.
Is Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis required?
No. Ever Crisis is supplementary, not a required first game. Producer Shoichi Ichikawa described it as a way to experience the broader Final Fantasy VII story, including Compilation titles, in a July 8, 2026 notice. That notice says the game launched on September 7, 2023, and that its service for both Japanese and global versions is scheduled to end October 6, 2026, at 11 PM PDT. With that end date approaching, it is not a durable way to begin the franchise.

Where do Advent Children and the other FF7 stories fit?
You do not have to add every legacy Compilation game, film, or book to the play order above. The official sources cited here do not establish one complete mandatory chronology for titles such as Advent Children, Dirge of Cerberus, and all the books. Treat them as optional further exploration rather than prerequisites for the core game sequence.

Availability depends on the title and can change, so check the current store listing before buying. Square Enix’s 2026 announcement lists Revelation for PS5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, Windows, Steam, and Epic Games Store, with a planned spring 2027 release. Its announcement does not give a specific launch date or price.
