Choose PS5 Pro if you have a 4K display, play several games with confirmed PS5 Pro enhancements, and value the potential image-quality or frame-rate gains enough to pay more. Choose a standard PS5 if those upgrades do not matter to the games you play—or if you want to spend less or use physical discs. In the US, Sony’s recommended prices effective April 2, 2026 are $899.99 for PS5 Pro, $649.99 for the disc PS5, and $599.99 for PS5 Digital Edition. The Pro is all-digital, so disc owners must factor in a separately sold compatible drive.

What changes with PS5 Pro?

PS5 Pro is a higher-performance version of PS5, but its distinguishing features are not automatic upgrades to every game. Sony says compatible games can combine 4K output, ray tracing, and AI-enhanced resolution through PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) at 60fps or up to 120fps. These are capabilities for supported games, not a promise that every title will deliver all those features or reach a particular frame rate. Sony’s product page explicitly says, “PS5 Pro enhanced features will vary by game.” Sony’s PS5 Pro overview describes the features and links to the current enhanced-game list.

That makes your own game library more important than the Pro name alone. Check whether the titles you actually plan to play have Pro enhancements, and what the developers say those enhancements include. One game’s result does not predict what another will do.

Which console fits your display?

Choose Pro if you have a 4K TV and want its supported-game upgrades

Sony presents the Pro’s combination of 4K output, ray tracing, and PSSR for compatible games on a 4K TV. A 4K display makes it easier to see the resolution improvements Sony describes, but it does not guarantee that every game will look or run differently. The game must support the relevant Pro features, and the specific changes vary.

A 4K TV is not required for standard PS5

A 4K display is not a prerequisite for using a standard PS5. If your display or games do not let you benefit from Pro-specific enhancements, the performance premium may be difficult to justify. The available manufacturer information does not establish that every Pro feature produces the same visible benefit on every display.

Compare the US prices and what is included

Sony’s US recommended retail prices below took effect April 2, 2026. They are a dated MSRP benchmark, not a guarantee of retailer price, stock, or availability.

Console US recommended price Listed built-in storage Disc drive
PS5 Pro $899.99 2TB SSD Not included; compatible drive sold separately
PS5 (disc) $649.99 1TB Included
PS5 Digital Edition $599.99 825GB Not included; a drive can be added separately

At those US prices, Pro costs $250 more than the disc PS5 and $300 more than Digital Edition, before discounts or the cost of a Pro disc drive. Sony lists the Pro with a 2TB SSD, compared with 1TB for the current US disc PS5 and 825GB for Digital Edition. These are nominal capacities; space available for games is lower because the system reserves storage. See Sony’s PS5 model information for the standard console listings.

For buyers outside the US, these dollar figures do not apply. Sony directs customers in other territories to local retailers or PlayStation Direct where available; prices and availability can differ.

Do you need a disc drive?

PS5 Pro is all-digital out of the box. If you own Blu-ray game discs or want to play physical PS4 or PS5 games, add the cost of Sony’s compatible disc drive to the Pro comparison. Sony says an internet connection is required to pair the drive with the Pro during setup. The vertical stand is also sold separately.

Rank #2
PlayStation®5 Digital Edition (slim)
  • Model Number CFI-2000
  • Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
  • Vertical Stand sold seperately

The disc PS5 includes a drive for physical PS5 and PS4 game collections on Blu-ray Disc. Digital Edition has no included drive, though one can be added separately. If you buy digitally, the drive difference may not matter; if you own discs, compare the complete cost rather than the console price alone. Sony’s Pro product details cover the separately sold accessories.

Should you upgrade from an existing PS5?

Keep your current PS5 if it plays the games you care about satisfactorily and you cannot name Pro-enhanced games you intend to play. Upgrade consideration makes more sense if you have a 4K display, several supported games on your list, and a preference for image quality or frame rate that is worth the additional cost to you. This is a practical recommendation based on Sony’s game-dependent feature support and the price gap, not a guarantee of a particular improvement.

Storage is another possible reason to prefer Pro: its listed 2TB SSD is larger than the capacities Sony lists for the standard disc and Digital Edition consoles. Consider that only if additional built-in room is useful to your installed library; the nominal figure is not all available for game installs.

What about PS4 games and Game Boost?

Sony says PS5 Pro can play more than 8,500 PS4 games, and that Game Boost can improve frame rates in some PS4 and PS5 games. Sony also notes that a small number of PS4 games are incompatible, so do not assume universal compatibility or a frame-rate gain for every title. Standard PS5 also supports PS4 backward compatibility. If a particular older game matters to your decision, verify that game rather than relying on the overall library count. Sony’s compatibility and Game Boost information provides the manufacturer’s qualification.

Which PS5 should you choose?

  • PS5 Pro: Best fit if you use a 4K display, play multiple games with documented Pro enhancements, and value their potential visual or frame-rate improvements enough to pay the premium. Its 2TB SSD may also suit a large installed library.
  • Disc PS5: Best fit if you want to spend less and have physical games or Blu-ray discs. At Sony’s April 2026 US recommended price, it is $250 less than Pro and includes the drive.
  • PS5 Digital Edition: Best fit if you buy digitally and want the lowest listed console price. At Sony’s April 2026 US recommendation it is $300 below Pro, with 825GB listed storage and no included disc drive.
  • Keep your current PS5: Sensible if it meets your needs and the Pro-enhanced games you would play do not justify the added expense.
