If you still need more runtime, tune graphics settings for that game or use a compatible USB-C PD power source. The right balance depends on the game and whether you have an LCD or OLED Deck; no single setting guarantees a specific amount of extra play time.
Lower the frame-rate limit first
Open the SteamOS per-game performance controls and reduce the frame-rate ceiling one step at a time. Play the same demanding section after each change and keep the lowest cap that still feels smooth enough to you. A lower frame limit reduces system demand and can save battery, according to Valve’s SteamOS 3.2 update notes from May 2022. The notes suggest 40Hz as one possible balance between responsiveness and consistency; that is general guidance, not a tested optimum for every game.
A steady lower target may feel better than a higher target the game cannot maintain consistently. Choose based on how the game actually feels, rather than assuming that the highest available number is best.
Match refresh rate to your Deck and target
When the game and interface allow it, lower the display refresh rate along with the frame-rate target. Do not set a refresh rate above your model’s screen limit: Steam Support says a setting above that cap will not improve performance and may drain the battery faster. The limits in its Steam Deck Basic Use & Troubleshooting Guide are 60Hz for LCD and 90Hz for OLED.

The battery and gameplay figures are Valve specifications, not measured results for a particular demanding game. Valve also lists APU power as 4–15W. Actual runtime varies with the game and settings; use the ranges as broad model context, not a prediction for your session. See Valve’s LCD specifications and OLED specifications.
Adjust graphics only if you need more runtime
After you have chosen a frame-rate and refresh-rate target, reduce graphics options that are costly in the specific game. Lower detail, resolution, or effects may help, but the result varies by title and setting. Change one option at a time and compare the same area of gameplay so you can tell whether the visual trade-off is worthwhile. There is no established, universal graphics preset or TDP value that guarantees a battery-life gain across demanding games.

Use brightness and wireless changes as situational tweaks
Lowering screen brightness or switching off wireless connections you do not need may be reasonable extra adjustments, but Valve’s cited documentation does not quantify their battery savings during demanding gameplay. Treat them as practical, situation-dependent choices rather than guaranteed fixes.
Use external power when efficiency is not enough
If you need to keep playing away from an outlet, a USB-C PD power bank can provide external power. Valve specifies USB Power Delivery and a 45W power supply for the Steam Deck; that specification does not verify any particular third-party power bank. Check the bank’s supported USB-C PD output, wattage, and cable compatibility, and do not assume every bank will charge the Deck while you play. Valve’s LCD specifications list the 45W supply.

What Verified and Playable ratings tell you
Steam Deck compatibility ratings help set expectations for whether a game works well on the device, not how long the battery will last. Valve describes Verified games as working great out of the box and Playable games as potentially requiring user tweaks. Neither label is a battery-life benchmark.

Valve’s February 2025 beta note reports up to 6% additional battery savings from reduced controller polling while the Steam Frame Limiter was active at 30fps in a low-power game such as Half-Life 2. That figure applies to that stated scenario; it is not evidence of a 6% gain in demanding games. See the Steam Deck Beta Client Update for the original scope.
