You do not need to meet the other player. The steps are simple, but account restrictions, buy limits, changing prices and the 2026 expansion beyond the old max-cash limit can affect a trade.
Where to find the Grand Exchange and who can use it
The GE is in Varrock. Access and offer slots depend on your account: the OSRS Wiki’s general reference reports three offer slots for free players and eight for members. Free players can buy only free-to-play items. Ironman accounts have a restricted GE interface for bonds only. Check the options shown in your current game client if an account restriction affects your trade. See the OSRS Wiki’s Grand Exchange reference.

Only tradeable items can be bought or sold through the GE. If an item cannot be selected in the offer interface, it may not be eligible for GE trading.
How to place a buy or sell offer
- Open the GE interface in Varrock. Select an available offer slot.
- Choose an item. For a buy offer, select the item you want to purchase; for a sell offer, choose it from your inventory.
- Set the quantity and price. The guide price is a reference, not a guaranteed sale price or fill. A buy offer is more competitive when its price meets or exceeds an available sell offer; a sell offer is more competitive when priced at or below an available buy offer. Matching offers can complete fully or partially, depending on what is available.
- Confirm the offer. Check the item, quantity and price before submitting. Buy limits apply to purchases of many items over a four-hour period; some variants share a limit. The limit is item-specific, so check the item rather than assuming a universal quantity. GE buy limits do not apply in the same way to selling.
- Collect the result. Use the bank collection interface to retrieve purchased items or coins from completed sales. A partially filled offer can leave a remainder active until it matches or you cancel it.
Choosing a price: guide price versus speed
Guide prices do not guarantee that an offer will fill at that amount. The result depends on opposing offers available when your offer matches. A price closer to the current opposing offers may complete sooner; a less competitive price may wait longer. These are trade-offs, not guarantees of a particular completion time or price.

#1 Best Overall
Jagex announced on 30 September 2026 that the maximum guide-price change increased from 5% to 20%, and that guide prices would update every three hours instead of every 24 hours. Jagex also said lower-volume items were expected to update more often. Those changes make guide prices more responsive, but do not turn them into live quotes or remove the uncertainty for items with limited trading activity. Read Jagex’s GE Improvements: Beyond Max Cash update.
Buy limits, account eligibility and trade size
- Buy limits: Many items have a purchase limit over four hours, and some related variants share a limit. The restriction is not a universal quantity; check the specific item.
- Free accounts: The OSRS Wiki reference reports three offer slots, and free players may buy only free-to-play items.
- Members: The same reference reports eight offer slots.
- Ironman accounts: The GE interface is restricted to bonds only, according to the reference. Confirm current account-specific behavior in the game.
- High-value offers: Since Jagex’s 30 September 2026 update, offers can exceed the former 2,147,483,647 GP limit by using coins together with platinum tokens. This changes the maximum offer value, not item eligibility or buy limits.
Trading above the old max-cash limit
Jagex announced that the former 2,147,483,647 GP offer ceiling has been superseded. A GE offer can now use a combination of coins and platinum tokens; Jagex says the combined currencies can support about 2.149 trillion GP. Individual item stacks—including coin stacks—remain capped at 2,147,483,647. For a purchase involving this currency conversion, Jagex’s stated workaround for known conversion and bank-placeholder issues is to carry the exact coin amount needed in your inventory. Existing purchase limits still apply. See Jagex’s announcement and issue notes.

GE tax and collection
Jagex confirmed in its 30 September 2026 update that GE tax still applies and remains capped at 5 million coins per item. That announcement does not specify a current percentage, so do not assume a rate from older guides. When you collect proceeds, check the amount shown in the interface.
Completed purchases and sales are collected through the bank collection interface. Collection is separate from placing an offer: a completed trade’s items or coins can remain there until you retrieve them.

Common reasons an offer may not complete
- Your price does not meet an opposing offer: adjust the price if getting a match sooner matters more than holding out for your original price.
- The offer is only partially filled: only part of the requested quantity has matched; the remainder may continue waiting.
- You reached the item’s buy limit: wait for the applicable four-hour period or choose another item; related variants can share a limit.
- The item is not tradeable through the GE: not every item can be offered on the market.
- The guide price is a poor indicator: low-volume items can have imprecise guide prices, and the actual match depends on available offers.
- A very high-value purchase encounters conversion issues: follow Jagex’s advice to have the exact purchase coin amount in your inventory.
