Check the game’s Steam Deck compatibility rating and notes on its Steam store page, then compare them with several recent reports from Steam Deck players. The rating tells you about compatibility and handheld usability—not a guaranteed frame rate—so community reports are the better place to look for performance clues, settings, and workarounds.
1. Find the official Steam Deck rating
On the Steam Deck, open the game’s store page or its entry in your library and look for its compatibility rating and details. Valve says the first Store tab on Deck highlights games it identifies as great on Deck. The rating is Valve’s compatibility review, not a performance benchmark.
Valve’s review is ongoing, so a game marked Unknown has not yet received a completed review; that label does not establish that the game fails to run. Ratings can change as review coverage and game or system software change.
2. Read what the rating does—and does not—tell you
| Rating | What Valve says it means | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Verified | “The game works great on Steam Deck, right out of the box.” | A strong indication of compatibility and handheld usability without manual adjustments. It is not a stated minimum-FPS guarantee. |
| Playable | The game may require manual adjustment. | Read the review details to see what might need attention, such as controls or setup. |
| Unsupported | The game is currently not functional on Deck. | Treat this as a significant compatibility warning, while checking current reports for any change in circumstances. |
| Unknown | The game has not yet been checked. | Do not interpret the absence of a review as proof that the game cannot run; seek recent player reports. |
Valve’s checks cover controller input and button icons, display support and legibility, seamless operation such as navigating launchers, and system support, including Proton and anti-cheat where applicable. These are meaningful tests of using a game on a handheld, but the criteria cited by Valve do not specify a required frame rate or promise a fixed FPS.

Valve says compatibility ratings apply to both LCD and OLED Steam Deck models. That scope applies to the rating; it does not mean measured performance will be identical on both models in every game.
3. Check recent Steam Deck player reports for performance
For game-specific performance clues, open the game’s page on ProtonDB. Valve’s Proton documentation points readers to ProtonDB for community compatibility reports. These reports are player-submitted evidence, not official Valve ratings or controlled benchmarks.

Give more weight to several recent reports that specifically describe playing on Steam Deck than to an old report or one that does not identify its device. Read the details rather than relying only on an overall community rating. Look for:
- Whether the player reports sustained, acceptable frame rates or recurring stutter during play.
- Graphics settings and any manual tweaks needed to make the game usable.
- SteamOS or Proton context, when the report provides it.
- Problems with launchers, anti-cheat, or getting past startup.
- Whether a workaround is optional or essential, and whether other recent players confirm it.
Reports can reflect different software versions, settings, play conditions, and personal expectations. Treat them as useful clues about what you may encounter, not as a promise that your own game will perform the same way.

4. Compare games using the same questions
If you are choosing between two or more games, keep the compatibility label separate from performance evidence. Compare them on the same points:
- Each game’s official rating and the reason Valve gives for it.
- How many recent reports specifically concern Steam Deck, and how recently they were posted.
- What players say about frame-rate consistency and stutter.
- Whether they needed changed settings or manual tweaks.
- Any launcher, startup, or anti-cheat friction.
- Whether the reports match your Deck model and intended play conditions.
A Verified rating with recent reports describing smooth play is more informative about your likely experience than either source on its own. If reports are sparse, old, or inconsistent, the available evidence is uncertain; avoid treating the rating as a substitute for performance data.
