These are decision shortcuts, not guarantees that one console has more games or better value for every buyer. Game availability and subscription catalogs change, and the right comparison is between the games and services you will actually use.
What models are being compared?
Configuration matters: a disc-equipped console is not directly equivalent to a digital-only one. The official US listings reviewed describe these versions:

These are manufacturer-listed configurations, not a claim about every model or bundle sold in every country. Check the exact model and included hardware in your local listing before buying. Microsoft’s product materials list 4K gaming resolution and performance targets up to 120 FPS for Series X; Sony’s listing describes 4K-ready gaming and output up to 120 fps at 120 Hz for the listed PS5. Such capability language does not guarantee that every game runs at those settings.

Which console has the games you want?
PlayStation 5 and PS4 games
Sony says over 8,500 PS4 games can be played on PS5. That is a manufacturer-published compatibility figure, not an independent audit, and it does not mean every PS4 title is supported. If you already own PS4 games, check compatibility for the particular titles you care about, as well as whether you own discs or digital copies and which console configuration you plan to buy.
Xbox generations and existing games
Microsoft describes thousands of games across four Xbox generations, including Xbox One, Xbox 360, and original Xbox titles. Support is specific to each game; do not assume every title from those generations works. Microsoft also says Xbox One games, saves, achievements, and friends carry over to Series X. If you have a substantial Xbox library, verify support for your must-play titles before treating the generation-wide description as a guarantee.

Exclusive games and shared releases
Start with a short list of games you genuinely intend to play, then check their current platforms. A title’s availability or exclusivity can change, and a game’s presence on one console does not establish its presence on the other. For shared games, the manufacturers’ feature descriptions alone do not show which system performs better. A fair comparison would require current, game-by-game testing at matching settings and on the same display.
How do Game Pass and PlayStation Plus compare?
Microsoft promotes Game Pass benefits that include hundreds of games, online multiplayer, and day-one releases; its comparison page describes Game Pass Ultimate as bundling hundreds of games, online multiplayer, EA Play, and day-one releases. Sony offers PlayStation Plus membership plans with a changing PS5 and PS4 game library, and also promotes classic games. These descriptions do not establish which specific games are currently in either service or the exact entitlement and price for every plan and market.

Before paying for a subscription, compare the current local plan terms against your own game list. Count only games you would otherwise play or buy, and include the subscription cost over the time you expect to keep it. Microsoft notes that options and pricing vary by market and that standalone products are not included in console bundles. Sony says a paid PlayStation Plus subscription is required for online multiplayer on the listed PS5. Check current terms directly when you buy; catalogs and plan details can change.
How do storage and expansion differ?
The listed PS5 Slim has 1 TB built in, though some of that capacity is reserved for system software. Series X is listed in 1 TB and 2 TB versions, as well as a 1 TB all-digital version. Advertised capacity is not the same as space available for games, and these figures do not establish equal usable capacity between consoles.

Microsoft sells a separate Series X|S Storage Expansion Card that connects through the dedicated expansion port; Microsoft says it provides game storage at the same performance as the internal custom SSD. The company also lists support for USB 3.1 external hard drives. Do not assume an external hard drive behaves like the internal drive or expansion card for every current-generation game. For PS5 M.2 storage, check Sony’s current compatibility and installation requirements before choosing a drive.

Sony identifies DualSense haptic feedback and adaptive triggers as features used in supported games. Xbox highlights its wireless controller and says most Xbox One controllers and accessories are compatible with Series X. Those are different feature sets, not evidence that one controller is more comfortable for everyone. If comfort, button layout, or a specific accessory matters, try the controller yourself where possible and verify compatibility for the exact accessory.

What should you check before buying?
- List your must-play games. Check each game’s current platform availability, backwards compatibility where relevant, and multiplayer support.
- Check your friends’ platform. If you play together, confirm whether the games you share support cross-play; do not rely on platform alone.
- Decide whether you need discs. Match the disc drive to your existing collection and how you buy games; verify the exact model because the Xbox lineup includes an all-digital Series X.
- Compare local total cost. Check current console prices and bundles in your market, then add any subscription or storage accessory you expect to buy. No current street-price winner is established here.
- Inspect your library and accessories. Verify your specific older games, saves, controllers, and other accessories rather than assuming generation-wide compatibility applies to every item.
- Compare subscription catalogs at checkout. Search for the games you expect to play and read current plan terms; an advertised library size does not guarantee a particular title is included.
