The one specific pre-patch task Blizzard calls out is to start Orin Straylight’s research before your realm’s maintenance during the week of October 6, 2026. Complete “In the Catalyst’s Shadow” and “Prismatic Potential” to unlock a quest that can grant one extra weekly Nebulous Voidcore. Patch 12.1.5 is listed for October 13, 2026; check Blizzard’s notice for your region’s maintenance timing.
Start the Nebulous Voidcore quest chain before maintenance
Blizzard’s 12.1.5 Content Update Notes, published October 1, 2026, give this advance step for the week of October 6 maintenance. The live quest state and maintenance schedule may differ by region, so verify them in game and in the official notice for your realm.
- In Voidstorm, accept “In the Catalyst’s Shadow” from Decimus before the week-of-October-6 maintenance.
- Go to Silvermoon City and pick up “Prismatic Potential” from Orin Straylight.
- Turn in “Prismatic Potential” to Orin so he can begin his research. Blizzard says a progress timer will appear above him.
- Return after the research finishes. During the week of October 6, Orin offers “Umbral Blessings of the Catalyst.” Completing it unlocks the option to trade gold, Voidlight Marl, or Veteran Mistcrests for one additional Nebulous Voidcore per week.
The extra Voidcore is an additional weekly option, not a general gear or inventory requirement. The patch notes do not prescribe a universal preparation checklist beyond starting this research.
Choose what to prepare for based on your goals
Patch 12.1.5 adds several different activities. There is no single required order: choose according to whether you want story, group content, a flexible solo challenge, or progression catch-up.

For the story campaign
“The Promise of Tomorrow” continues events in Quel’Thalas and Zul’Aman and leads to Kith’ix. If you mainly want the narrative, prioritize the campaign rather than treating raid readiness as a prerequisite.
For the Unbinding of Kith’ix raid
The Unbinding of Kith’ix is a single-boss raid with Story Mode, Raid Finder, Normal, Heroic, and Mythic difficulties. Mythic supports flexible groups of 15–25 players. Choose a difficulty and group plan that fits your schedule; the notes do not establish a required item level.

For a long solo or companion session
The Labyrinth of Kindo’jan is a nine-chamber, Delve-like challenge with Valeera Sanguinar as a companion and rewards that include Mythic gear. You can attempt it in one session or progress wing by wing. Completing a wing can still award rewards; pushing farther offers more treasure opportunities but also more risk. The official 12.1.5 overview also describes the Labyrinth.
For public outdoor events
Aqir Invasions take place in Eversong or Zul’Aman. Each event runs for ten minutes every hour, with public objectives leading to a boss encounter. Blizzard describes six scenario types, and combat scenarios can include affixes.

For Prey catch-up
How much progress you receive depends on your Journey rank and how many hunts you have completed that week:
- Below rank 4: each hunt awards 4,000 Journey progress, equivalent to one full rank. These hunts take precedence over progress from the first four weekly hunts.
- Ranks 4–9: each of the first four hunts of the week grants 2,000 Journey progress.
Blizzard says these changes are intended to help new and returning players, as well as Season 2 players who have done fewer Prey hunts, catch up.
