The practical challenge is not just the VPS rental price: you need enough sustained CPU capacity to encode and enough monthly outbound transfer to carry the stream. Start with a modest profile, test the entire setup, and do not rely on it unattended until it survives a restart and YouTube reports a healthy stream.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and access to YouTube Live Control Room.
- An Indian VPS whose provider permits continuous outbound streaming, with enough transfer and sustained compute for your chosen output.
- An operating system and remote desktop or display arrangement that can run your chosen OBS Studio build.
- A compatible video file stored on the VPS, and a way to administer and monitor the server securely.
YouTube’s older OBS community guide says the channel must be verified for its integrated setup and advises waiting 24 hours after verification. Because that timing is not confirmed in current official YouTube Help guidance, follow the prompts shown for your channel in Live Control Room rather than treating the older guide as a universal current rule. Choose a VPS for sustained streaming, not just its headline price
A VPS listing does not prove that its CPU can encode continuously without dropped frames. No provider plan below has been independently tested for this use. Treat listed specifications as provider claims, confirm the exact checkout terms, and run your own test before committing to a long billing period.

These figures are listings, not endorsements or performance results. Before paying, compare the full monthly cost including GST and setup fees; vCPU type and whether allocation is shared or dedicated; transfer volume, direction, overage price, and fair-use limits; sustained throughput rather than advertised uplink alone; India location and route to YouTube ingest; outbound RTMPS access; OS and remote GUI support; recovery options; support; and cancellation or refund terms. Do not treat “unmetered” as unlimited usable traffic without checking port speed and fair-use conditions.

Estimate monthly data transfer
At a continuous video bitrate of 6 Mbps, 30 days of video payload is about 1.94 decimal TB: 6,000,000 bits/second × 2,592,000 seconds ÷ 8. This is arithmetic, not a provider quote, and excludes audio and protocol overhead. A 100 GB monthly transfer allowance cannot cover a full 30 days at that rate unless the provider applies a different policy. Lower bitrates use less transfer, but calculate from the bitrate you actually send and allow room for audio and overhead.
The National Informatics Centre’s webcast guidance mentions 2–4 Mbps dedicated bandwidth per stream in its own context; that is not YouTube’s encoder recommendation. Use YouTube’s settings guidance for a YouTube stream, and confirm outbound capacity and transfer policy with your VPS provider.

Configure YouTube Live and protect the stream key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or configure the broadcast you intend to use for testing.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that broadcast. Use the correct YouTube-provided endpoint; do not guess or reuse an endpoint from an unrelated service.
- Keep the key private. Do not show it in screenshots, publish it in a configuration snippet or public repository, or leave it in accessible logs. If it is exposed, replace or reset it using the controls available in your account.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, which carries RTMP over TLS/SSL. The RTMPS connection uses port 443 and the correct encrypted YouTube endpoint and path. Do not open outbound port 1935 as a blanket requirement for YouTube RTMPS: the National Informatics Centre’s separate RTMP guidance is context-specific. Ask the VPS provider or network administrator about outbound rules for the actual RTMPS endpoint you will use. YouTube explains the protocol in its RTMPS guidance; OBS’s service configuration lists YouTube RTMPS endpoint values in its service configuration.
Install OBS and make the video loop
- Provision the VPS in an Indian location and connect using the provider-supported remote administration method. Check that the OS, graphics/display session, and OBS build you intend to use are compatible before purchasing. OBS menu labels and availability can vary by operating system and version.
- Install a supported OBS Studio build using the instructions for that OS from the OBS Project. Configure the server’s display or session arrangement so OBS can run and be monitored in your chosen setup.
- In OBS, select the YouTube service preset or the appropriate YouTube RTMPS option. Enter the server URL and stream key copied from Live Control Room. Do not share the key when asking for help.
- In the Sources panel, add a Media Source, select the video file on the VPS, and enable Loop. Confirm the file plays, its audio is audible, and it returns to the beginning at the end.
- Set the output resolution, frame rate, encoder, bitrate, rate control, and keyframe interval. Start conservatively and check CPU load and dropped frames during a sustained test; the VPS’s advertised vCPU count alone is not evidence it can encode your chosen profile.
Use YouTube’s encoder guidance as a starting point
YouTube’s current encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended 2-second keyframe interval that should not exceed 4 seconds. Its H.264 bitrate figures below are platform recommendations, not a specific OBS preset or a guarantee that a small VPS can encode reliably.

For ordinary stereo audio, YouTube recommends AAC or MP3 at 128 Kbps. A pre-encoded compatible video or a lower output profile may reduce compute demand, but verify that the source and output are compatible with your OBS configuration. YouTube’s full encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance is the reference for current platform recommendations.
Test the complete chain before leaving it unattended
- Use a private, unlisted, or otherwise suitable test broadcast. Start OBS and check that YouTube receives the stream and reports healthy stream status.
- Watch the loop through a complete cycle. Check video, audio, transitions at the loop point, and that OBS does not stop or stall when the file restarts.
- Monitor OBS CPU load, dropped frames, network throughput, and YouTube stream health for long enough to reveal sustained problems, not just a successful connection.
- Restart the VPS and verify that your intended session and OBS startup arrangement work after reboot. Add monitoring or restart automation only if you understand how it interacts with YouTube’s active broadcast state.
- Keep the server and software updated, restrict remote administration, and store the stream key securely. Plan how you will notice and respond to a failed VPS, lost network route, or interrupted broadcast.
YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” It also advises, “During the event, monitor the stream health and review messages.” The quoted advice appears in the same encoder guidance.

Troubleshoot common failures
