Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →To rerun a prerecorded gaming video on YouTube Live with OBS, configure four separate pieces: a YouTube live event, an OBS scene that loops the VOD, YouTube’s encoder auto-start setting, and a Windows startup entry or scheduled task that launches OBS with --startstreaming. Scheduling the event does not start OBS, and neither OBS nor YouTube can turn on a powered-off PC.
What “auto-start” means
There are three different actions to automate: opening OBS, starting the encoder feed from OBS, and making the scheduled YouTube broadcast live for viewers. They require separate controls. OBS’s --startstreaming launch parameter starts streaming when OBS opens; Windows must still launch OBS. YouTube’s encoder auto-start determines whether an incoming encoder feed starts the scheduled broadcast. It does not open OBS or power on the computer.
A looped video source repeats the VOD within the outgoing feed. It does not create or select a YouTube event. For an unattended setup, make sure the intended event is selected and test the complete chain before relying on it.
Set up the YouTube event and connect OBS
- Create or schedule the event. In YouTube Studio, create a live stream or schedule one for the time you want. YouTube’s scheduled-stream feature can show viewers an upcoming event and let them opt into a reminder, but it does not launch your encoder. Follow YouTube’s live-streaming setup instructions.
- Get the encoder details. In the event’s Live Control Room, note its server URL and stream key. The key identifies where OBS sends the feed and allows YouTube to accept it. Treat it like a password: do not show it on stream or share it publicly. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update OBS.
- Connect OBS. In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Choose YouTube if it is offered, then select the appropriate account or event workflow; otherwise enter the event’s server URL and stream key in the fields provided. Confirm the settings belong to the event you intend to broadcast. YouTube documents the encoder connection and stream-key handling in its live-streaming help.
Make OBS play the VOD repeatedly
For one gaming VOD
- In the OBS scene you plan to stream, add a Media Source and choose the local video file.
- Enable the source’s Loop property so playback starts again when the file ends.
- Check the scene preview and audio before scheduling automation. Verify the correct file is selected and that its audio is audible in the OBS mixer.
OBS Media Source supports common video formats and has a Loop property. See the OBS Media Sources guide for source details.

For a playlist of VODs
- Add a VLC Video source and load the playlist in the desired order.
- Set Loop Playlist according to whether the sequence should repeat after the last item.
- Confirm VLC is installed on the computer running OBS, then check playback and audio in the preview.
VLC Video is the playlist option described by OBS, and it requires VLC to be installed. A single Media Source is simpler when you only need one file repeated. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
Choose whether YouTube starts the broadcast automatically
YouTube separates receiving the encoder feed from making the viewer-facing event live. In the scheduled stream’s YouTube Live settings, enable the encoder auto-start option if you want the broadcast to go live when OBS begins sending video. If it is not enabled, the encoder can connect while the event still requires a separate Go live action in YouTube Studio. Labels and controls can change, so use the current controls in Live Control Room.

Launch OBS automatically on Windows
Use the Startup folder if OBS should open when you sign in. Use Task Scheduler if you need it to launch at a particular time. In either case, the machine must be on and Windows must be running; these steps do not wake a powered-off computer.

- CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 Essentials Starter Kit
Option A: Start OBS at sign-in
- Press Windows key + R, enter
shell:startup, and press Enter to open the current user’s Startup folder. - Create a shortcut to
obs64.exein that folder. Find the executable in the OBS installation directory if necessary. - Open the shortcut’s properties and append
--startstreamingto the end of the Target field, after the closing quote around the executable path. For example:"C:Program Filesobs-studiobin64bitobs64.exe" --startstreaming. Your installation path may differ. - Sign in while the PC is on to test that OBS opens and begins streaming as expected.
Option B: Start OBS at a scheduled time
- Open Task Scheduler and choose Create Task (or the equivalent task-creation option in your Windows version).
- On Triggers, add the time or schedule when OBS should launch.
- On Actions, choose Start a program. Browse to
obs64.exe, and put--startstreamingin Add arguments. - Set Start in to the folder containing
obs64.exe. OBS specifically recommends setting this working directory for a scheduled task or other automated launch. - Review the task’s sign-in and run conditions so they match how the PC will be used, then test the task while you can monitor OBS and YouTube Studio.
OBS lists --startstreaming as “Automatically start streaming.” Its documentation also covers adding launch parameters to a Windows shortcut: OBS Launch Parameters. A successful OBS launch does not, by itself, guarantee that a particular scheduled YouTube event has been selected or that the broadcast will become live.
Test the complete setup before leaving it unattended
Use a private or unlisted test event and verify each handoff in order. Do not assume that a scheduled event, an OBS launch, or a connected encoder alone proves that viewers can see the intended VOD.

Common problems and what to check
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| OBS does not open at the intended time | The task trigger, account/sign-in conditions, executable path, or PC power state prevents launch. | Run the task manually while signed in; confirm the trigger and action point to the installed obs64.exe. A task cannot run while the computer is powered off. |
| OBS opens but does not begin streaming | The launch argument is missing or malformed, or OBS cannot connect with the saved stream settings. | Check that --startstreaming is outside the quoted executable path, and verify the server URL, stream key, and network connection. |
| OBS sends video, but the event is not live to viewers | YouTube has received the encoder feed, but the scheduled broadcast still needs a Go live action. | Review the event’s encoder auto-start setting and confirm its broadcast state in Live Control Room. |
| The wrong event receives the feed or no expected event appears | OBS may be connected through a different account/event workflow or using another stream key. | Recheck the event’s server URL and key, the selected YouTube account, and the destination shown in Live Control Room before going live. |
| The video plays once and stops | Loop is off, or the playlist’s repeat setting is not enabled. | Enable Loop on the Media Source, or Loop Playlist on the VLC Video source. |
| A VLC playlist source is unavailable | VLC is not installed on the computer running OBS. | Install VLC, then reopen or reconfigure the VLC Video source. |
| The stream stops after a power, reboot, or internet problem | The local encoder or connection stopped. The reviewed OBS and YouTube setup instructions do not promise automatic recovery after these failures. | Restore power and connectivity, reopen OBS, and inspect the event state. Test recovery behavior for your own setup rather than assuming a relaunch will resume the same event. |
Local OBS or cloud playout?
Local OBS gives you control over OBS scenes and local inputs, but it depends on a powered computer and working internet connection. Automation adds separate Windows, OBS, and YouTube settings to maintain. For a cloud-based prerecorded-streaming option, YouTube’s encoder help names Gyre as an example; that reference does not establish its current India availability, pricing, or terms. The option below is StreamNeo, which is specifically for playing uploaded videos to YouTube.
