If a World of Warcraft patch is downloading slowly or appears stuck, first check whether Battle.net is still making progress and whether a download limit is set. If the download has failed or stopped, note any error, fully close Battle.net and its Agent process, then try Blizzard’s repair and connection steps in order.
Check the update and identify the problem
World of Warcraft versions and game modes are installed and updated through the Battle.net desktop app. Blizzard says each version is installed separately, so confirm that the app is updating the version you intend to play: Blizzard’s World of Warcraft installation guidance.
Before changing settings, write down the exact error message or code. Blizzard advises searching support using the specific message or a description of the problem, since a separate article may address it: World of Warcraft technical troubleshooting. A slow download that is still progressing is not the same as a failed or halted download; one short pause alone does not establish that the update is frozen.
If the download is slow but still moving
Check Battle.net’s download limit
Open Battle.net settings and look for the Network Bandwidth or download-limit setting. Blizzard support forum guidance recommends checking this setting when downloads are slow: Blizzard forum discussion about download speeds. If a limit is enabled, change it only if you meant to permit faster downloads and your connection or data plan allows it. Removing a limit does not guarantee a particular download speed.

Allow for variable network conditions
Network congestion can be one possible reason for a slow download, but it is not proof of a current Battle.net outage. In an April 2, 2020 forum post, Blizzard support representative Hagut said increased demand on the wider internet had affected players’ game-download speeds and advised leaving downloads running during busy periods. That dated post is general context, not a report on conditions today.
If the download is stuck or has failed
Close Battle.net and let Agent.exe exit
- Exit the Battle.net desktop app.
- Open Task Manager and wait for Agent.exe to disappear from the process list.
- Reopen Battle.net and try the update again.
- If the download still fails, restart the computer and retry.

If the update keeps failing
Repair the game files
Run Battle.net’s Scan and Repair for World of Warcraft to check for damaged game files. Blizzard includes this among its troubleshooting steps for download or update problems: World of Warcraft technical troubleshooting.
Check connection and security-software interference
- If you use Wi-Fi, follow Blizzard’s advice to optimize the wireless connection; a wired connection may be worth trying if available.
- Check that your security software allows Blizzard software to connect. Use its approved exception or allow-list method rather than disabling protection wholesale.
- Close other applications that may conflict with Battle.net or compete for system resources or network capacity.

When to contact Blizzard support
If the update still fails after these checks, contact Blizzard technical support and include the exact error code or message, the WoW version being updated, and which steps you tried. The cited Blizzard guidance supports these troubleshooting steps; it does not establish buying hardware, deleting folders, reinstalling the game, changing DNS, or using a VPN as universal first-line fixes.
