You can use a Linode cloud server to stream a sequence of local video files to YouTube Live: create an FFmpeg concat manifest, point FFmpeg at the files, then send the output to the current YouTube ingest URL with your stream key. This does not take a YouTube playlist URL and turn it into media files. You need the source files on the server and permission to rebroadcast them.

What this method does—and what it does not

FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads a text manifest and processes listed files in order, as though their packets had been joined. The FFmpeg Formats Documentation describes it as a demuxer that reads “a list of files and other directives from a text file.” It is a way to sequence local media for a live encoder output, not a YouTube playlist downloader or URL resolver.

If you mean a YouTube playlist URL, this workflow does not fetch or extract its videos. Obtain authorized source files separately and store them on the Linode instance. Do not rebroadcast material unless you have the rights or permission to do so.

Before you start

  • A Linode (Akamai Cloud) Linux instance with the source media available on disk.
  • FFmpeg built with the concat demuxer, the codecs you need, and the output protocol for the YouTube ingest URL you choose.
  • Access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and an active stream URL and stream key.
  • Media files with compatible stream layouts for concat demuxing. Matching codecs, streams, and time bases matter; this method does not automatically normalize mismatched inputs.
  • Enough sustained CPU, disk access, and outbound network capacity for the chosen encoding workload and bitrate.

Prepare the files and concat manifest

Put the media in a stable directory

Use paths that will remain valid while FFmpeg runs. The example below assumes two files in /srv/media/; replace them with your own authorized files and paths.

Create the manifest

Save a UTF-8 text file such as /srv/media/playlist.ffconcat with one file directive per input:

ffconcat version 1.0
file '/srv/media/part-01.mp4'
file '/srv/media/part-02.mp4'

The ffconcat version 1.0 header identifies the script format. Quote paths using FFmpeg’s manifest syntax and escape spaces or special characters as required; a shell’s quoting rules are not a substitute for the manifest’s rules. Verify that every path is readable by the account running FFmpeg.

Check compatibility before streaming

The concat demuxer expects the inputs to have matching streams, codecs, and time bases. Inspect each file’s video and audio streams and compare them before relying on a long stream. If layouts or codecs differ, a filter-based concat and transcode workflow may be necessary instead; the demuxer will not seamlessly make unlike inputs compatible. Inaccurate file durations can also shift timestamps and produce artifacts or gaps.

Get the YouTube Live destination

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the live stream.
  2. Copy the current server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Use the endpoint YouTube provides rather than assuming an ingest address or port.
  3. Prefer the RTMPS endpoint when your FFmpeg build supports it. RTMPS carries RTMP over TLS; YouTube’s encoder setup guidance and RTMPS guidance explain using the endpoint and key supplied in Live Control Room.
  4. Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish it in an article, screenshot, source repository, or shared shell history. Use an appropriately protected configuration or environment mechanism and restrict access to it.

First-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to become available, according to YouTube’s encoder setup guidance. If you cannot start an event, check current account eligibility and live-stream access in YouTube Studio.

Choose encoding settings for YouTube and your instance

The command below is an illustrative transcode profile, not a universal preset or a performance guarantee. Its 2500 kb/s video target, 128 kb/s audio target, and 60-frame GOP are example values only. Select resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio settings using YouTube’s current live encoder settings and the capacity you can sustain. YouTube recommends constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval; match the GOP to the actual frame rate, so a 60-frame GOP corresponds to two seconds only at 30 fps.

This example re-encodes with H.264 video and AAC audio. Re-encoding increases CPU demand, but can make a chosen output profile more consistent. Stream copying avoids video/audio re-encoding when the input streams are already suitable, reducing encode load, but it does not fix incompatible inputs or guarantee YouTube-compatible output. Confirm the installed FFmpeg build includes the required encoder and protocol.

  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable

Start the stream with FFmpeg

Replace the sample manifest path and the quoted destination with the exact RTMPS URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Never paste a real key into a public command or share the command with credentials exposed. Check option placement against the installed FFmpeg version if you adapt the command.

ffmpeg -re -f concat -safe 0 -i /srv/media/playlist.ffconcat
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 2500k -maxrate 2500k -bufsize 5000k
  -g 60 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -f flv 'rtmps://CURRENT_YOUTUBE_INGEST/STREAM_KEY'

-re reads the input at its native rate rather than sending the file sequence as fast as possible. -f concat selects the concat demuxer; -safe 0 allows the absolute paths in this example. The video and audio options transcode the output, and -f flv selects the container used for the RTMP-family ingest output. The URL shown is a placeholder, not a working endpoint.

Size the server and network for the workload

There is no single Linode instance size established as correct for every stream. Capacity depends on whether you copy or re-encode, the resolution and frame rate, the complexity of the media, and other work running on the VM. Confirm FFmpeg has the relevant encoders and protocols, observe CPU use during a test, and ensure the instance can read the files without storage bottlenecks.

Allow outbound traffic to the actual YouTube ingest endpoint and port shown for your stream, with firewall rules limited to what is needed. Do not assume one port applies to every endpoint or configuration. YouTube recommends upload capacity with 20% headroom above the stream’s total bitrate and advises testing and monitoring stream health. For multiple outputs, count all output bitrates toward the required bandwidth. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Verify the live event

  1. Start FFmpeg and watch its console output for input, encoding, and connection errors.
  2. Use the Live Control Room preview and stream health indicators to confirm YouTube is receiving usable audio and video before relying on the event.
  3. Monitor the process, CPU, and network during a test long enough to expose buffering or dropped frames.
  4. After the stream, check the event and any archive in YouTube Studio. A successful connection alone does not confirm the whole sequence played as intended.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely causes What to check or change
FFmpeg cannot read the concat list or reports file errors Wrong manifest path, unreadable media, invalid quoting, or malformed paths. Check the manifest syntax, each absolute path, file permissions, and special-character escaping.
Jumps, gaps, or timestamp warnings between files Inputs do not match in streams, codecs, or time bases, or FFmpeg has inaccurate duration information. Compare input stream layouts and timestamps; correct the source or use a filter-based concat/transcode workflow for unlike files.
FFmpeg connects but YouTube does not show a usable stream Wrong or stale server URL/key, RTMP/RTMPS mismatch, unsupported protocol in the FFmpeg build, or incorrect endpoint port. Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room, confirm the scheme and endpoint details, and verify FFmpeg’s protocol support.
Dropped frames, buffering, or unstable stream health Insufficient encode capacity or outbound throughput, or a bitrate too high for the available connection. Test and monitor CPU and stream health; reduce resolution or bitrate, or use an instance/network with more capacity. No universally correct Linode size is established.
No audio or audio/video drift Inconsistent input audio streams, time bases, or timestamps. Inspect the audio and timestamps in every input; concat demuxing assumes compatible streams and uses durations to place subsequent files.
Live event cannot be activated Live access is not enabled or account eligibility requirements are not met. Check YouTube Studio’s current access and eligibility status. YouTube says first-time live streaming activation can take up to 24 hours.
