To reduce browser memory use, start by closing tabs you no longer need, disabling unused extensions, and checking which pages or tasks are consuming memory. In Chrome, turn on Memory Saver under Settings > Performance; in Edge, enable Sleeping tabs under Settings > System and performance > Performance. These features can free resources, but tabs may reload or background activity may pause when you return.
Why is your browser using so much RAM?
Open tabs, extensions, and background pages all contribute to a browser’s workload. As Google puts it, “The more tabs you have open, the harder Chrome has to work.” Available device memory matters too: Google says insufficient memory can slow performance and cause pages to crash or fail to load. The browser controls below can reduce some workload, but results depend on the computer, browser version, pages, and background activity; the official guidance does not establish a comparable memory-savings figure for each browser.
If pages are crashing or failing to load, first free memory by stopping unnecessary work. Google recommends closing unneeded tabs and other apps, then reloading the affected page. Google’s Chrome troubleshooting guide covers these symptoms and steps.
Reduce Chrome’s memory use
Turn on Memory Saver
- In desktop Chrome, open Settings > Performance.
- Turn on Memory Saver.
- Choose Moderate, Balanced, or Maximum. Moderate deactivates tabs after a longer interval; Balanced is Google’s recommended compromise; Maximum deactivates tabs sooner.
Memory Saver deactivates unused tabs. When you select one again, Chrome reloads it, so expect a wait and a refresh of the page’s current state. A more aggressive setting may free more memory according to Chrome’s setting description, but it can make returning to a tab less seamless. The control is for desktop Chrome; menu wording and availability may vary by version. See Google’s Memory Saver instructions.

Keep important background sites active
If a site needs to remain ready in the background, add it under Always keep these sites active in Settings > Performance. Chrome lets you enter site exclusions or choose currently open sites. Some activity can also prevent deactivation, including active audio or video, screen sharing, page notifications, downloads, partially filled forms, pinned tabs, or connected devices. Because exclusions mean those pages may continue using resources, reserve them for sites that genuinely need uninterrupted background activity. Google’s Memory Saver help describes the exclusions and protected activity.
Show memory use on tabs
Chrome can display tab memory information through Settings > Appearance. The exact menu wording varies by desktop platform and version. Use the display to identify likely heavy pages, then close tabs you do not need or investigate what those pages are doing. Google’s instructions are at Chrome Help.

Close heavy tasks and trim extensions
- Close tabs you no longer need and disable or remove extensions you do not use.
- Open Chrome’s Task Manager through More > More tools > Task Manager.
- Select the Memory column to sort by memory use.
- Review the pages and background tasks, then end only a task that is safe to stop.
Ending a task can lose unsaved work, so check the page or activity before stopping it. For the task manager steps and cautions, see Google’s Chrome troubleshooting guidance.
Use the equivalent controls in Microsoft Edge
Put idle tabs to sleep
- Open Settings > System and performance > Performance.
- Turn on Automatically put tabs to sleep.
- Adjust the inactivity interval if needed, and add sites that should remain active to the exclusion list.
Microsoft’s support page describes a two-hour default inactivity interval, which users can adjust; the default may change, so check the value shown in your installed version. A sleeping tab pauses background activity and releases some resources, while generally offering a quicker return than a discarded tab. If Edge discards a tab, it unloads the page content and must reload it when reopened. Details are in Microsoft’s Sleeping tabs guidance.

Consider the responsiveness cost of Energy saver
Edge Energy saver can put background tabs to sleep sooner and reduce other activity. More aggressive energy-saving settings may make the browser feel slower—for example, video may be less smooth. Edge’s Performance detector can identify high-resource background tabs and let you sleep or close selected tabs. Use these controls when the resource or energy savings are worth the possible responsiveness trade-off; see Microsoft’s performance features overview.
How Chrome, Edge, and Firefox differ
| Browser control | What it does | What happens when you return | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chrome Memory Saver | Deactivates unused desktop tabs; offers three levels and site exclusions. | The tab reloads when selected. | More aggressive deactivation may mean more waiting and a less seamless return. |
| Edge Sleeping tabs | Pauses background tabs; offers an inactivity interval and site exclusions. Edge can also discard tabs. | A sleeping tab can return without a full reload; a discarded tab must reload. | Sleeping pauses background activity; discarding means a full reload. Energy saver can increase these effects. |
| Firefox performance settings | Firefox automatically selects performance settings based on hardware and operating system. Its cited guidance discusses hardware acceleration. | The cited guidance does not describe a tab-sleeping or tab-discarding control comparable to Chrome or Edge. | Use the settings as general stability or graphics troubleshooting, not as a guaranteed way to reduce tab memory. |
What to try in Firefox
Mozilla says Firefox automatically chooses performance settings based on your computer’s hardware and operating system. Its help article covers hardware acceleration, which can be relevant to graphics or stability problems, but does not establish that changing it will lower tab memory. Settings and interface availability can vary by platform, package, and version, so follow the labels in your installed Firefox. See Mozilla’s performance settings guide.

Choose the least disruptive fix first
- Need a quick reduction now? Close unneeded tabs and other applications, pause downloads, and disable extensions you do not use.
- Want inactive tabs to use fewer resources? Try Chrome Memory Saver or Edge Sleeping tabs, starting with less aggressive timing or levels.
- Need a background page to stay active? Add it to the browser’s site-exclusion list, understanding that keeping it active can continue to use resources.
- Still seeing crashes or errors? Use the browser’s task controls to find heavy work, stop only tasks you can safely lose, and reload the affected page.
Use the labels in your installed browser if a path differs: settings and defaults can change between versions and platforms. The controls above explain what each browser documents, not a guarantee that one browser uses less memory than another.
