To reduce CPU use in a 4K 60fps YouTube Live loop in OBS, switch from x264 software encoding to a compatible hardware encoder already available on your system, such as NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, or Intel Quick Sync. Then set the stream to YouTube’s codec-appropriate bitrate, CBR, and a 2-second keyframe interval, and test the same scenes and motion you expect to use live. Hardware encoding can reduce CPU encoding work, but it does not remove CPU load from scenes or guarantee that the GPU can render the stream smoothly.

Why the encoder is the first CPU setting to check

OBS can encode with x264, which uses the CPU, or with a supported hardware encoder that moves video encoding work to a specialized component in the GPU. OBS generally recommends hardware encoders for performance, but the options available depend on your hardware and operating system. Use an encoder your system actually supports; there is no universal best option or preset for every machine.

Hardware encoding targets CPU load from encoding. Other work—such as rendering a game, processing sources, and applying effects—can still limit performance. Switching encoders is therefore a useful first adjustment, not a guarantee that every part of a 4K60 stream will become lighter or lag-free. See OBS Project’s hardware encoding documentation for its encoder and platform guidance.

Set up OBS for a 4K60 YouTube stream

  1. Check which encoder OBS is using

Open OBS and go to Settings > Output. In the streaming output settings, identify the encoder. If it is x264 and a suitable hardware option is available, choose the option matching your hardware—for example, NVENC for a supported NVIDIA GPU, AMF for supported AMD hardware, or Quick Sync for supported Intel graphics. Exact labels vary with OBS version and device.

Do not assume NVENC, AMF, or Quick Sync is available simply because a computer has a GPU or Intel processor. OBS lists compatibility by platform and hardware. In particular, OBS notes that Intel Mac VideoToolbox does not support streaming because it lacks the constant-bitrate support most streaming services require; its guidance for those users is to use x264.

    Codec YouTube-listed minimum YouTube-recommended bitrate
    AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) 10 Mbps 35 Mbps
    H.264 14 Mbps 50 Mbps

These are YouTube’s published figures for the indicated resolution, frame rate, and codec, not promises that a particular encoder or upload connection can sustain them. Choose a bitrate your upload can reliably maintain. YouTube recommends testing upload speed and monitoring stream health; its live encoder settings also include codec and resolution guidance.

Changing bitrate does not offload encoding from the CPU. Select a compatible hardware encoder to target CPU encoding load; use the bitrate that fits YouTube’s ingest guidance and your connection.

OBS x264 vs hardware encoder: how to choose

Option CPU implications What to check
x264 software encoding Uses CPU for video encoding. It may be the available choice on some systems, including Intel Mac streaming according to OBS’s compatibility note.
Hardware encoding Shifts video encoding work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component. Choose only an encoder supported by your operating system and installed hardware. It does not eliminate scene, effect, or rendering work.

The best choice depends on the hardware and workload in the actual streaming computer. The encoder comparison is about where video encoding happens—not a guarantee that one codec, GPU brand, or setting will look or perform best in every scene.

If CPU use falls but the stream still lags

Check whether the remaining bottleneck is rendering, GPU capacity, the upload connection, or another workload instead of assuming the encoder switch failed. A game and OBS can compete for GPU resources even when video encoding is offloaded.

  • Turn Your Camera into a Pro Webcam: Connect your DSLR or mirrorless camera to any computer and go live in stunning quality
  • Stunning quality: Stream and record in 1080p60 or even 4K60 for razor-sharp detail (Requires a compatible camera and the latest Cam Link 4K model)
  • Connect More Than Just Cameras: Use a camcorder, action cam, or even your iPhone to level up your content
  • No Lag, No Delays: Ultra-low latency keeps your video and audio perfectly in sync, just like it should be
  • Your iPad, Now a Pro Field Monitor: Preview your shots in real time on an iPad with USB-C
  • OBS reports rendering problems or the picture stutters: Check GPU load and reduce competing rendering work. If a game is running, try limiting its frame rate or lowering its graphics settings or resolution, then retest the same stream workload.
  • Encoding problems remain after selecting hardware encoding: Confirm that OBS is using the intended supported encoder and repeat a representative test. If the option is unstable or unavailable, revert to a supported encoder rather than forcing a setting meant for different hardware.
  • The connection cannot hold the chosen bitrate: Test upload capacity and lower the bitrate to a level the connection can sustain, while recognizing that this may be below YouTube’s recommendation for 4K60.
  • An NVIDIA system remains GPU-bound: NVIDIA’s guide says GPU utilization above 95% may cause stream lag; that is vendor guidance, not a universal diagnostic cutoff. It suggests limiting in-game FPS, reducing game graphics or resolution, and, where applicable, enabling Windows Game Mode or GPU scheduling. Test changes individually on your setup.

See NVIDIA’s streaming guide for its NVENC-specific recommendations. Results vary with the particular GPU, operating system, OBS version, scene complexity, and game workload.

What to expect from a 4K YouTube Live loop

YouTube says 4K/2160 streams are optimized for quality at normal latency; its published guidance says low-latency improvement is unavailable for 4K. YouTube also transcodes a live stream into output formats for viewers. These platform behaviors are separate from the local CPU load of encoding in OBS. Details are in YouTube’s live streaming latency guidance.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a continuous YouTube loop of uploaded videos rather than a camera or live desktop feed, StreamNeo can run that loop in the cloud: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your home computer does not have to stay on. A slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month.

StreamNeo is for YouTube playback of uploaded videos, not going live from a camera. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
