To check whether a Linux VPS is losing traffic on its route to YouTube, test the exact ingest hostname configured in YouTube Live Control Room while the streaming problem is happening. For an RTMPS stream, a TCP route report to port 443 is more relevant than testing a guessed host or relying only on an ICMP ping. Then compare repeated measurements with encoder network counters and YouTube’s stream-health notices. A loss percentage shown at one intermediate router does not, by itself, mean the live stream lost that percentage of its data.

What you need to check

A VPS being in India does not establish that its route to YouTube is faulty. Results depend on the VPS’s actual network path, the active ingest hostname and transport, and the time of the test. There is no India-specific packet-loss figure or universal loss threshold in the cited guidance that diagnoses a YouTube stream.

Keep three different questions separate: whether route probes are getting replies, whether the encoder reports network delivery problems, and whether the stream is encoding and rendering correctly. Route tests are evidence about the path, not a direct measurement of every packet in the live stream.

Find the actual YouTube destination and transport

  1. Open the active stream configuration in YouTube Live Control Room. Copy the ingest URL or hostname assigned to that stream; do not substitute a hostname from an old setup or guess a default endpoint.
  2. Confirm the protocol and port used by the encoder. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL and recommends obtaining the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room. Its troubleshooting guidance identifies the protocol and server as rtmps; port 443 may be needed, depending on the encoder configuration. Check YouTube’s current instructions at Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
  3. Protect the stream key. A stream key is a credential, not a diagnostic detail. Do not include it in a command, screenshot, or log you share publicly; redact it from any configuration output.

Testing a different hostname, protocol, or port can produce results that do not describe the connection your encoder is actually using.

Run a TCP route report from the VPS

For an RTMPS stream configured for port 443, an example using mtr is:

mtr -T -P 443 -rw -c 100 <ingest-hostname>

Replace <ingest-hostname> with the hostname copied from the active YouTube configuration. Do not paste the stream key. The options shown request TCP probes (-T) to the selected target port (-P 443), report mode (-r), wide output (-w) and 100 report cycles (-c 100). The Ubuntu Bionic manual documents these options for mtr 0.92-1; installed versions can differ, so check mtr --help or the local man page before relying on a particular option. See the Ubuntu mtr manual.

Capture a useful comparison

  • Run the report during the period when the stream problem occurs, and record the time and timezone.
  • Run it again during an unaffected period from the same VPS to compare conditions.
  • Save timestamped output. A single brief report may miss intermittent problems.
  • Keep the encoder’s network-related counters or logs and the matching YouTube Live Control Room stream-health notices for those same periods.

A TCP probe aimed at the configured RTMPS port is more closely aligned with the service connection than an ICMP-only route test, but it is still a probe—not a packet-by-packet audit of the stream’s TCP session.

Interpret loss without blaming the wrong hop

Loss appears at one intermediate hop only

If an intermediate router reports loss but later hops and the destination reply without comparable loss, do not treat that router’s percentage as the stream’s end-to-end loss rate. Routers may deprioritize diagnostic responses. The Ubuntu mtr manual specifically warns that modern routers can give ICMP echo packets lower priority, making reported reliability worse than actual reliability. This is a reason to interpret probe results carefully, not a reason to dismiss every loss report.

Loss persists at the destination

Persistent destination loss across repeated reports is stronger evidence of a route problem than loss confined to one intermediate hop. It still does not prove that the live stream’s TCP traffic experienced an identical loss rate. Look for agreement between destination results, encoder network-dropped counters or connection errors, and YouTube health warnings at the same timestamps.

Route reports are stable while the stream degrades

If repeated route reports remain stable during the fault, investigate other causes too: encoder settings, available outbound capacity, CPU load, or the input source. The route report alone cannot rule out every network issue, but a VPS’s country or city is not enough reason to change providers.

Check sustained upload capacity separately

Packet loss and insufficient upload capacity are different problems. Compare the encoder’s configured bitrate with YouTube’s recommendation for the exact codec, resolution, and frame rate, then assess whether the VPS can sustain that outbound rate during the stream. YouTube advises choosing a quality suitable for the connection, running a speed test, testing beforehand with representative motion and audio, and monitoring stream health. Its published examples include H.264 1080p30 at a recommended 10 Mbps and H.264 1080p60 at a recommended 12 Mbps; those figures apply to those specific combinations, not to every resolution or codec. Check the current table in YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions guidance.

A short speed-test peak does not establish that the VPS can sustain the encoder’s bitrate throughout a broadcast. Use the stream’s actual duration and the times of any health warnings when comparing capacity and route evidence.

Troubleshoot common results

What you observe What it may mean What to check next
Loss is reported on one intermediate hop, but not at later hops or the destination The router may be limiting replies to diagnostic probes; the reported percentage is not proof of equivalent stream loss. Repeat the test and compare the destination, encoder counters, and YouTube health notices at the same times.
Repeated reports show loss at the destination during stream trouble A path issue is more plausible, though the probe result is not an exact measurement of the stream session. Preserve timestamped reports and check for matching encoder network errors and YouTube warnings.
The encoder reports an RTMPS SSL error or timeout The configured URL, protocol, port, or encoder support may not match the active ingest setup. Recheck the Live Control Room RTMPS URL and encoder settings; YouTube’s guidance says port 443 may be needed for SSL errors and advises checking URL and RTMPS support for timeouts.
Route reports look stable but YouTube reports poor stream health Capacity, encoder configuration, CPU, or input issues may be involved rather than route-probe loss. Compare configured bitrate to the correct YouTube recommendation, check sustained outbound performance, and inspect encoder and input conditions.
The mtr command rejects an option The installed mtr version may support different flags from the documented Ubuntu Bionic version. Check mtr --help or the installed man page and adapt the command to that version.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running rather than diagnose a VPS route, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
