A PS5 sending a 2160p (4K UHD) signal to your TV does not mean a game rendered every frame at native 4K. A game can render internally at a lower or changing resolution, reconstruct the image with an upscaler, and then send a 2160p signal to the display. Those are separate stages, and the game’s implementation—not the output setting alone—determines how it looks and performs.
What native resolution, upscaling and output resolution mean
To understand PS5 image quality, separate the resolution at which a game creates its image from the resolution of the video signal sent to the TV.
- Native or internal render resolution: The pixel dimensions at which the game initially renders its image. “Native 4K” means the game renders at the 4K target itself, rather than merely sending a 4K signal.
- Game-level upscaling: A reconstruction or enlargement step inside the game’s rendering pipeline. The developer integrates and selects this approach; it may use a platform-provided library. It builds a higher-resolution output from a lower-resolution render.
- Dynamic resolution scaling (DRS): The game varies its internal resolution as workload changes. When demand rises, it can lower the render resolution and upscale the result, helping balance visual quality and frame rate.
- Console output resolution: The resolution of the video signal the PS5 sends to the display. Sony lists output up to 2160p (4K UHD); this setting does not disclose the game’s internal render resolution. Sony’s PS5 FAQ
Does PS5 upscale games to 4K?
It can, but there is no single answer for every game. A game may render below 2160p and use its own upscaling technique to produce a 2160p image. It may also vary its internal resolution through DRS. In either case, the console can send a 2160p signal to the TV without the game rendering natively at 2160p.
For a game-specific example, Ubisoft describes Assassin’s Creed Shadows using PSSR to upscale from lower render resolutions; its article uses 1080p to 2160p as an illustration, not as a claim about every game. Ubisoft also explains that DRS can lower the pre-upscale resolution in demanding scenes rather than requiring the game to render for its most demanding moment all the time. Is 2160p the same as native 4K?
No. 2160p describes the output signal; native 4K describes the game’s internal rendering resolution. A 2160p signal can contain an image rendered at a lower or dynamic resolution and then reconstructed. Conversely, choosing 2160p in the PS5’s video settings does not force a game to render internally at 2160p.
What is PSSR?
PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) is Sony’s upscaling technology for PS5 Pro. It is part of the game’s image-rendering path, not a synonym for the PS5’s output-resolution setting. Whether it is used, and how it is integrated, depends on the game and its implementation.

- Quality Visuals: The VG270K 27" IPS monitor with 3840 x 2160 UHD resolution in a 16:9 aspect ratio presents stunning, high-quality images with excellent detail. The zero-frame design does away with the thick frames found on conventional monitors freeing up precious screen space.
- AMD FreeSync Premium Technology: Say “goodbye” to stuttering and tearing. With AMD FreeSync Premium, the monitor’s frames are synced with the graphics card’s frames, which eliminates screen tearing and provides the smoothest gaming experience.
- Quick Refresh Rate: Different content has different refresh rate and resolution requirements. If you are playing an FPS or racing game, you will need a monitor with a high refresh rate. However, if you are doing office work or streaming videos, a higher resolution will be more beneficial. With DFR technology, users can choose a higher resolution, or a higher refresh rate based on what is suitable for them.
- Responsive: Up to 0.5ms GTG (Gray to Gray) response time enhanced gamers’ in-game experience. No matter if the fast-moving action or any dramatic transitions will be rendered smoothly without the annoying effects of smearing or ghosting.
- ZeroFrame Design: With a Nitro VG270K monitor, you’ll want to see as much of the display as possible. Get more real estate with the near bezel-less design, allowing you to see more and do more. The ZeroFrame design lets you place multiple monitors next to each other for a seamless, almost uninterrupted view.
What one game’s comparison can—and cannot—show
Ubisoft says its Assassin’s Creed Shadows PSSR implementation worked with system software changes. For that game, Ubisoft’s technical contributors reported a more stable image and notably less shimmering than with TAA. The same account notes that lower render resolution can create performance headroom, while image clarity and artifacts are potential trade-offs. These are observations about Ubisoft’s implementation in that title, not a guarantee that PSSR beats every other technique in every game or scene. Ubisoft’s technical explanation
Enhance PSSR Image Quality on PS5 Pro
Sony documents an Enhance PSSR Image Quality setting for CFI-7000 model-group PS5 Pro consoles in certain compatible games. It is not a universal option for every PS5, every PS5 Pro model group or every title. Check Sony’s current support guidance and the individual game’s available graphics options for applicability. - QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
- The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
What is QSSR?
Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) is Sony’s announced streamlined AI-upscaling tier for standard PS5. Sony says it uses a streamlined neural-network architecture and a hand-tuned implementation for PS5. Its October 1, 2026 announcement named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first games to offer QSSR as an additional graphics option through patches. Sony says it will offer QSSR broadly to PlayStation developers; that does not mean every game supports it now. Sony’s QSSR announcement
Sony describes QSSR as improving image detail and stability compared with conventional approaches, but its announcement provides no independent benchmark or quantified universal performance gain. A QSSR graphics option should be judged in its particular game and mode, not as a promise of a fixed frame-rate or image-quality increase.

How to compare a game’s graphics options
Do not choose a mode based on labels such as “4K” or the name of an upscaler alone. When a game offers graphics modes, compare the details that affect the result:
- Base render resolution: Is it fixed or dynamic, and what resolution does the game render before reconstruction?
- Motion and detail: Look for stability in motion and how well fine details are resolved.
- Artifacts: Check for shimmer or other reconstruction artifacts in the scenes you play.
- Performance target: Consider the mode’s frame-rate goal and how consistently it holds it.
- Compatibility: Confirm the game, console model, patch and selectable graphics options; these can determine whether PSSR or QSSR is available.
What you need to view a 4K signal
Sony lists PS5 output through 2160p and supports 4K/120Hz where the display and connection support it. To view 4K output, use a compatible 4K display and select 2160p in the console’s video output settings. Sony generally recommends the included HDMI cable or an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. A compatible screen, cable and output setting let you view the signal; none of them performs game-level upscaling. Sony’s 4K resolution guidance
