Official U.S. examples range from a $24.99 launch price for one game’s Standard Edition to $69.99 for other games’ Standard or Deluxe Editions—and higher tiers can cost more. Treat each figure as a title-, platform-, and date-specific example, not a market average. To judge a price, compare the same game and edition at the same retailer, then decide whether the upgrade extras and any recurring costs are worth paying for.
What do new video games cost?
The official U.S. prices below illustrate how much prices can differ; they do not establish what a new game usually costs across the market. They come from distinct titles and business models, and some are dated announcement prices or offers.
| Game and source | U.S. price cited | What the price represents |
|---|---|---|
| Towerborne, Xbox Wire announcement, February 26, 2026 | Standard: $24.99; Deluxe: $29.99 | Prices announced for the premium full-game launch. The announcement also said the game was available through Game Pass Premium and Ultimate. These are announcement prices, not a guarantee of today’s store price. |
| NBA 2K27, 2K, September 4, 2026 | Standard: $69.99; Deluxe: $99.99; Ultra: $149.99 | The Ultra price was a limited-time offer that ended September 6, 2026. 2K describes the figures as suggested retail prices and says actual retail prices may vary. |
| PRAGMATA, PlayStation Store listing, accessed October 3, 2026 | Deluxe: $69.99 | A U.S. storefront listing for the Deluxe Edition, which includes the base game and Shelter Variety Pack. Store prices and offers can change. |
| Grand Theft Auto VI, PlayStation Store listing, accessed October 3, 2026 | Standard: $79.99; Ultimate: $99.99 | One platform’s U.S. listing for a game dated for release November 19, 2026—not a universal price recommendation. Its pre-order benefit includes a month of GTA+ that auto-renews unless canceled. |
These figures are not directly interchangeable: they cover different games, editions, dates, and purchase models. The sources do not establish a representative market-wide average. Check the current listing for your region, platform, format, and retailer before buying.
How to decide whether a game’s price is fair for you
Start with the actual offer in front of you, not an edition label or a price from another game. Then assess what you receive and how you expect to play.

- Match the comparison. Compare the same title, platform, format, edition, and retailer. Note whether the shown price is a suggested retail price, a limited-time offer, or the retailer’s current price.
- Check what each edition includes. Read the itemized contents rather than assuming “Deluxe” or “Ultimate” means more playable game. Identify the base game, gameplay add-ons, cosmetics, collectibles, and any subscriptions or access benefits.
- Value only extras you will use. Ask whether the particular outfits, skins, gestures, music, artwork, add-ons, or early-access benefits matter to you. An upgrade’s name alone does not show whether its premium is worthwhile.
- Calculate the premium. Subtract the base-edition price from the higher edition’s price at the same retailer and time. Decide whether the specific extras you want justify that difference.
- Include likely service costs. Check whether online play requires a separate paid subscription, whether the game is already included in a subscription catalog you use, and whether any bundled membership renews automatically.
- Recheck before checkout. Prices, offer windows, availability, and subscription terms can change. Confirm the current listing and cancellation details at the point of purchase.
Is a Deluxe or Ultimate Edition worth the extra money?
It depends on the contents and your preferences; the tier name is not a value assessment. For example, the PRAGMATA Deluxe listing describes the base game plus a Shelter Variety Pack with outfits, a weapon skin, music, gestures, and artwork. Those items show what the bundle contains, but they do not establish that its $69.99 listed price is worthwhile for every buyer.
For any upgrade, separate items that change the playable game from cosmetic or collectible extras. Then compare the upgrade price with the value you personally place on the named items. If you would not use or want most of them, the base edition may be the better fit. If you want the added content, check whether it is exclusive to the bundle or can be bought separately; rely on the listing’s stated terms rather than assuming.

Should you buy physical or digital?
Format prices are not always the same. Nintendo says that starting in May 2026, new Nintendo-published digital games exclusive to Switch 2 will have a different MSRP from their physical versions. The policy is limited to those games and that platform; it does not establish that digital games are always cheaper or more expensive elsewhere. Nintendo says the game experience is the same in packaged and digital formats and that the pricing difference reflects format production and distribution costs. Nintendo Support: About Nintendo Switch 2 Game Pricing.
Compare the actual price of the format you want at the time of purchase. Nintendo also notes that retail partners set their prices and prices can vary by title, so a suggested price is not necessarily the price every store charges.

What extra costs should you check?
Online multiplayer subscriptions
Some games require a separate paid console subscription for online play. 2K says NBA 2K27 console online play requires one. Factor that service cost into your decision if online play is important to you; it is separate from the game’s listed edition price. 2K’s NBA 2K27 announcement.
Subscription catalogs and bundled memberships
A subscription catalog can affect whether buying a game makes sense if the game is included in a service you already use. Towerborne’s 2026 launch announcement said it was available through Game Pass Premium and Ultimate as well as as a premium, one-time purchase. Availability and terms can change, so verify the current catalog and the plan you would need rather than assuming a subscription is always the cheaper option. Xbox Wire’s Towerborne announcement.

Quick Recap
Why can prices differ between listings?
- Retailer and offer: Suggested retail prices can differ from the price a retailer actually charges. 2K explicitly says its suggested prices may vary at retail, while Nintendo says retail partners set prices and prices can vary by title.
- Edition: A higher tier can bundle extras or benefits, but the details vary by game. Compare the itemized contents and price difference.
- Format and platform: Physical and digital prices may differ, and a policy for one platform or publisher should not be generalized to others.
- Timing: A launch announcement, sale, or time-limited offer may no longer match the current price. The cited NBA 2K27 Ultra offer, for example, ended September 6, 2026.
- Business model: A game may be sold as a one-time purchase, offered through a subscription catalog, or paired with a separate service cost. Compare the option that fits how you actually plan to play.
