For routine Old School RuneScape purchases and sales, the Grand Exchange (GE) is usually the more convenient choice: it matches offers without requiring you to find and meet another player. Trade directly when you have a specific player or negotiated arrangement in mind and want to complete the exchange together. Neither method is established as generally cheaper or safer; the better fit depends on how you want to arrange the transaction.

How the Grand Exchange and direct trading work

Grand Exchange

The GE matches player buy and sell offers for tradeable goods. You can place an offer and leave it to match, rather than coordinating a meeting with the person on the other side. The Old School RuneScape Wiki reports that members have eight offer slots and free players have three, and that completed or partially completed offers can be collected at banks. These are community-maintained details, so check the live game if an exact current limit matters. Old School RuneScape Wiki: Grand Exchange

Player-to-player trade

A direct trade is an exchange arranged between two players, who must find each other and agree on the items or coins in the trade screen. Jagex confirms that Old School Bonds can be exchanged either directly between players or through the GE. That confirmation is specific to Bonds; it does not establish all current direct-trade rules for every item, account status, or game mode. Jagex: Old School Membership Bonds

Which method should you choose?

What matters Grand Exchange Direct trade
Convenience Offers can match without arranging a meeting. You need to identify and coordinate with the other player.
Negotiation You set an offer; the exchange matches it with another player’s offer. You can agree on the exchange with a specific player before completing it.
Fees The Wiki reports a seller tax on qualifying sales; see the fee section below. No universal direct-trade fee is established by the cited sources.
Buying limits The Wiki reports item-specific purchase limits over four-hour windows. Current direct-trade limits and eligibility rules are not established by the cited sources.

Use the GE for routine buying and selling

Choose the GE when convenience matters more than arranging a face-to-face exchange. It is suited to leaving a buy or sell offer to match, and you do not need to know or meet the other player. Keep in mind that an offer may not fill immediately and that the Wiki reports item-specific buying limits.

Use direct trade for a specific arrangement

Direct trade is a reasonable fit when you already have a counterparty or have agreed to an exchange and want to carry it out together. It is not proven to offer a general price advantage: a negotiated deal may differ from current GE conditions, but the available sources do not compare live prices across the two methods.

GE tax and buying limits

The Old School RuneScape Wiki reports that a 2% tax on qualifying GE sales was introduced on 9 January 2023. It says the tax is paid by the seller and exempts items sold below 50 coins and Bonds. The same source reports item-specific buying limits measured over four-hour windows. These are secondary-source mechanics that may change; check the current game information before relying on a particular item’s limit or tax treatment. Old School RuneScape Wiki: Grand Exchange

Verify the trade before accepting

In a direct trade, review both offer windows in the game before confirming. The cited sources do not establish detailed scam-prevention rules, so do not assume a trade is safe simply because it is direct or involves someone familiar. For GE transactions, review the offer and its completion status in the exchange interface.

Recent GE update: check the official details

Jagex’s official site lists a 30 September 2026 update titled “GE Improvements: Beyond Max Cash.” The landing page establishes that an update with that title was listed, but does not document its mechanics. Do not infer from the title how values above the usual cash range are handled, or whether the update changes tax, currency, or direct trading. Consult the full update notes or the live client for those details. Jagex: Old School RuneScape

Trade worlds and historical context

Jagex’s world list includes activity labels for free and members trade worlds. The list can change, and those labels do not establish that direct trading is restricted to those worlds. Jagex: World server list

The GE’s introduction was supported in Jagex’s 2015 Content Poll #29 by 76.2% of votes (55,161 of 72,385). That is historical context about the introduction, not evidence of what players currently prefer. Jagex: Old School Content Poll #29
