Wrap the figure so its finish cannot be abraded, immobilize it in a sturdy inner box, then cushion that box inside a larger outer box. A well-packed parcel limits movement and helps absorb impacts, but carrier packaging guidance is not a guarantee against damage.
What protects a collectible figure in transit?
Use separate layers for the figure and the parcel. First protect the figure’s surface and delicate parts; then keep the wrapped figure from moving inside a sturdy box. For a fragile, valuable, or awkwardly shaped figure, place that closed inner box inside a larger outer box with cushioning around it. USPS, UPS, and FedEx all emphasize cushioning and limiting movement; UPS and FedEx recommend double-boxing fragile items.
Carrier instructions are general parcel guidance, not figure-specific testing. Requirements can vary by service, destination, and item, so check the applicable carrier rules for the shipment.
How to pack the figure step by step
- Prepare the figure. Remove a base, stand, or accessory only if it is designed to come off safely. Wrap removable pieces separately so they cannot strike the figure. For delicate paint, flocking, or a soft finish, put a clean, nonabrasive barrier against the surface before adding cushioning. Carrier guidance does not establish which materials are safe for every collectible finish; test unfamiliar material in an inconspicuous spot or ask the maker for advice.
- Protect fragile details and wrap individually. Cushion projecting parts and delicate joints without crushing thin pieces or forcing loose parts against one another. If using bubble wrap, UPS advises applying multiple layers with the flat side facing the item; for a finish-sensitive surface, keep a suitable barrier between the figure and the cushioning material. FedEx also recommends wrapping breakables individually and filling empty spaces to restrict movement (FedEx breakables guidance; UPS packaging tips).
- Secure it in the inner box. Choose a sturdy carton with enough room for cushioning. Position the wrapped figure centrally and fill voids so it cannot move. Do not pack it tightly against a wall, corner, or hard object.
- Double-box for extra protection when warranted. Close the inner box, then place it in a larger outer box with cushioning around it. UPS recommends an outer box larger than the inner box with cushioning between them. FedEx advises 3 inches of cushioning in and around the inner box; treat that as its general guidance and adapt the fit to the figure and applicable carrier instructions. Do not compress the contents to force them into a box (UPS packaging tips; FedEx breakables guidance).
- Check for movement. Close the fully packed parcel and gently shake it. If anything shifts or can be heard moving, add cushioning and check again. USPS advises adding cushioning when contents shift; do not use an unprotected figure as the test item (USPS package preparation).
- Seal and address the parcel. Use shipping-grade packaging tape to close the box and reinforce its seams. Put the label securely on a broad, flat surface. UPS advises including a duplicate delivery and return address inside the package (USPS package preparation; UPS packaging tips).
Choose materials for cushioning, fit, and surface safety
- Corrugated boxes: Use sound cartons sized to leave room for protective material. A double-wall outer shipping box can be a useful option, but choose based on the parcel’s size and the box’s stated capacity, not the label alone. UPS describes a two-box method for fragile goods (UPS packaging tips).
- Bubble wrap or air-cellular cushioning: These can cushion a wrapped item. Apply multiple layers as UPS recommends, and use a suitable barrier if direct contact could abrade or mark the finish (UPS packaging tips).
- Packing paper or other void fill: Add enough to keep the figure or inner box from shifting. The best fill depends on the parcel’s shape and the material’s ability to stay in place. USPS emphasizes restraining movement, while UPS lists several fill options (USPS package preparation; UPS packaging tips).
- Shipping tape: Use tape intended for packaging and reinforce the closure and seams, as USPS recommends (USPS package preparation).
Should you use one box or two?
Choose based on the figure’s fragility, value, shape, and how much cushioning space is available. A single sturdy box can hold a securely wrapped figure with enough cushioning and no movement. For a figure that is especially fragile, valuable, or difficult to cushion evenly, double-boxing adds a cushioned space around the inner box. No single cushioning material is established as best for every collectible. Consider whether the material cushions the figure, stays put in the box, and is safe to place near its finish.
When professional packing may make sense
If the figure is high-value, unusually shaped, or too delicate to pack confidently, consider asking a packing service whether it handles fragile or unique items. What a “Fragile” label can—and cannot—do
A fragile marking may identify the parcel’s contents, but it does not replace cushioning, a stable inner pack, or a properly sealed box. USPS recommends strong packaging tape and seam reinforcement, while UPS advises secure taping and label placement. Pack the figure to withstand ordinary parcel handling rather than relying on special handling or a warning label (USPS package preparation; UPS packaging tips).
