For an HTTP-based sleep-sounds source, put FFmpeg’s reconnect options before the source URL’s -i. To recover from a source that disconnects, reaches EOF, or encounters a transient network or server error, configure the corresponding retry behavior separately. These HTTP options do not guarantee uninterrupted playback, and they do not automatically apply to other protocols.
Configure reconnect options for an HTTP source
Use this as an input-side template. Replace SOURCE_URL with the HTTP URL for your sleep-sounds stream, then append the output options and destination from your existing FFmpeg setup. The reconnect flags belong before the relevant -i; they configure how FFmpeg handles that input.

...OUTPUT_OPTIONS...The 30-second delay limit is an illustrative choice, not a universal recommendation. Choose retry behavior that suits the source service, then test with the actual input and output. The documented behavior of these options does not guarantee seamless listening after a reconnect.

Set a retry policy without hiding persistent failures
The template includes retries for network errors and HTTP 5xx responses, with a maximum delay example. Add a retry-count limit or total-delay limit if your operating policy requires one; these settings control different things. There is no single delay or retry count established as best for every sleep-sounds service.

Retrying a response is not the same as fixing its cause. For example, repeatedly retrying a persistent authorization failure can leave the stream offline while FFmpeg continues trying. Match HTTP status retries to the source service’s behavior, and check the URL and access requirements if the same failure recurs.
Confirm the source protocol and installed FFmpeg build
These flags are HTTP protocol options. Do not assume they control RTSP, a local-file loop, or every HLS demuxing case. The exact behavior can depend on the protocol handling used by the input and the FFmpeg build installed on your machine.

- Check the installed build’s HTTP protocol help with
ffmpeg -h protocol=http. - Confirm that the options you plan to use are listed and accepted by that build.
- Run the command against the real source and output, and observe what happens when the source disconnects or ends.
- If an option is rejected or behaves differently than expected, use the local help for that build rather than assuming that a setting documented for another version applies.
Upstream source declarations on the moving master branch show defaults of 120 seconds for reconnect_delay_max and 256 seconds for reconnect_delay_total_max. Those values are not a guarantee about your released build; check its own help before relying on defaults.
Keep a 24/7 process running beyond HTTP reconnects
Reconnect options address specific HTTP input failures. They do not ensure that FFmpeg stays alive if it exits for another reason, and they are not a general process supervisor. A 24/7 setup also needs monitoring and an outer supervisor appropriate to the machine or service hosting FFmpeg. The reconnect settings alone do not establish which supervisor or hosting provider to use.
