March of Giants is an upcoming free-to-play 4v4 tactical MOBA with a distinct announced hook: each player controls a Giant who commands battalions of Soldiers, while teams deploy Battleworks such as trenches, tanks, turrets, and bunkers to affect the battlefield. That makes its design concept different from familiar hero-focused MOBAs such as League of Legends and Dota 2. It does not yet establish that it is faster, easier, deeper, or better balanced.

How March of Giants differs from a traditional MOBA

Ubisoft describes March of Giants as a lane-based, 4v4 tactical MOBA. Its announced systems combine a player-controlled hero-like character, commanded units, and structures that can alter the battlefield. Ubisoft explicitly presents the game as a different experience from established MOBAs including League of Legends and Dota 2, rather than a direct attempt to copy their position in the genre. Ubisoft Montreal’s feature and its developer design account describe the concept and intended systems; they are not independent or controlled comparisons.

Comparison point March of Giants What to compare in established MOBAs
Team format Announced as 4v4 lane-based combat. Team size and lane structure vary by game and mode; the official materials reviewed do not provide a direct side-by-side comparison.
Player-controlled character Each player controls a Giant, described as a battlefield commander and hero-like character. Compare how each game’s playable characters move, fight, and contribute to team objectives; no matched gameplay evidence is available here.
Command over units Players command battalions of Soldiers. Ubisoft says Soldiers can scout, gather resources, capture targets, attack fortifications, and fight opposing Giants. The extent of unit command is a useful point of distinction, but the reviewed sources do not quantify it against particular rival games.
Changes to the battlefield Teams can use Battleworks—announced examples include trenches, tanks, turrets, and bunkers—to influence combat and reshape the battlefield. Compare whether and how other games let players change terrain, fortify positions, or add structures during a match; the official sources do not establish a ranked comparison.
Setting and tone A First World War-inspired battlefield mixes industrial-era technology with fantasy Giants born from dreams and nightmares. This is a setting distinction, not evidence of a gameplay advantage.

What the Giant-and-Soldier design could mean in play

Players control a commander as well as a combat character

The Giant is not described only as a hero who fights opponents. Ubisoft frames the role as a battlefield commander, while Soldiers can perform tasks across the map, from scouting and resource gathering to capturing targets and pressing objectives. If those systems remain in the game as described, players will need to consider how their own Giant’s actions fit with the work of their battalions.

Battleworks add a map-shaping layer

Battleworks are the other central announced distinction. Trenches and bunkers suggest ways to alter or reinforce positions, while tanks and turrets are among the examples Ubisoft has named. The stated goal is for these deployable structures and units to affect combat and the battlefield itself. The sources establish the design ambition, but do not show how often Battleworks can be deployed, how much control players have over them, or how decisive they are in a finished match.

PARTNERS Board Game | 1st USA Edition | A 4 Player Strategy Board Game Played in Teams of 2 | Perfect for Game Night with Family, Friends, Adults, Teens, All Ages
  • 1ST USA EDITION of Denmark's #1 Best Selling Board Game
  • ARE YOU COMPETITIVE?...Sabotage is a team sport. Choose your partner wisely because only the duo with the right strategy, a bit of luck, and the ability to work with their partner will claim victory
  • IT'S A RACE!: a 4 player game played in teams of 2. Players use cards to race their colored pawns around the board and into their finishing zone. The first duo to get all their team's pawns in the finishing zones first wins. But BEWARE, your opponent can block you, swap you, and even knock your pawns back home along the way. So get ready for twists and turns and never count yourselves out!
  • TEAM STRATEGY: You and your partner must swap a card at the beginning of each round and this decision becomes increasingly strategic as the game progresses. Especially since you can’t discuss this decision! Do you give a card that betters your teammate’s position in the game? Or perhaps you give a card to help them sabotage your opponent! The choice is yours and yours alone
  • FAST AND EASY TO LEARN: In under 7 minutes you can learn the rules of Partners and get in the action. Games usually last between 30-45 minutes. This family and adult board game is easy to learn, but difficult to master and endless fun! Each game comes with 4 sets of player pawns, playing board, game rules, and one pack of PARTNERS playing cards

What cannot yet be compared reliably

The available official descriptions explain the concept, not its competitive performance. They do not establish how March of Giants compares with other MOBAs on match length, strategic depth, balance, onboarding difficulty, accessibility, or player population. Those questions require evidence from the relevant build and actual play, not conclusions drawn from a feature list.

  • Match pace: No reliable comparative match-duration figure is stated.
  • Difficulty: Unit command and Battleworks may add decisions, but their presence alone does not prove that the game is harder or easier to learn.
  • Competitive quality: No comparative balance data or evidence of a mature competitive scene is established.
  • Popularity: The sources reviewed provide no relevant statistic comparing its player base with other MOBAs.

Ubisoft Montreal’s Laure Guilbert, a product marketing manager, acknowledged that breaking into the MOBA genre is difficult while arguing there is room for a different experience. That is the studio’s positioning, not evidence that the game has already achieved a particular advantage over its competitors. Ubisoft’s feature also quotes the development team’s emphasis on how players respond to the design; neither statement substitutes for a direct comparison of released games.

Pandemic Cooperative Strategy Board Game, 2-4 Players, 45-60 Min
  • COOPERATIVE STRATEGY: Work as a team against the game itself in Pandemic. Players combine their roles and actions to contain four global outbreaks, share knowledge, and race to complete all four cures before time runs out.
  • SPECIALIST ROLES: Play as the Medic, Scientist, Researcher, Operations Expert, and more. Each role has distinct abilities that shape team strategy and make every player's decisions important from start to finish.
  • TEAMWORK GAMEPLAY: Pandemic rewards planning, card management, and coordinated moves. This cooperative strategy game creates tense decisions each round as players balance immediate threats with long-term progress.
  • SERIES ENTRY POINT: Pandemic is the base game that introduces the wider series, including Pandemic Legacy Season 1. Learn the core systems here, then build on that experience in future campaign play.
  • GROUP GAME NIGHT: For 2-4 players ages 8 and up, Pandemic plays in about 45-60 minutes. It fits family game nights at home, family vacations, adult board game groups, and players looking for a teamwork-focused tabletop challenge.

Who may be interested in its announced approach

Players curious about the game’s premise may want to watch for two things in a hands-on build: whether commanding Soldiers feels meaningfully different from controlling a single hero, and whether deploying Battleworks creates consequential tactical choices rather than simply adding visual activity. The First World War-inspired, gunpowder-fantasy and steampunk-influenced setting may also appeal to players seeking a different tone from the genre’s familiar fantasy worlds. These are reasons to investigate the game, not established claims about its quality or accessibility.

Playtest and release plans

Ubisoft’s October 1, 2026 announcement says a Pioneer Playtest is planned for October 7–18, 2026, with access for North America and selected European countries through the Steam playtest page. The same announcement describes Early Access as planned for summer 2027. These are announced future plans, not confirmation that access is available now or that the schedule cannot change. Do not treat the 2025 alpha as the current feature list

Ubisoft’s September 2025 Closed Alpha page listed 15 playable Giants, five Battleworks, one PvP map, Breach mode, Custom Games, Bot Matches, and Tutorials for that particular test. The alpha ran September 2–14, 2025, and Ubisoft said it represented only part of the planned content. Those details are a historical snapshot, not a confirmed lineup for the October 2026 playtest or eventual release. The same page listed Windows 10/11 64-bit, 8 GB dual-channel RAM, and 15 GB storage as minimum requirements, plus a GTX 2060 Super or Radeon RX 5700 XT and 16 GB RAM for its 1080p medium preset target; check the current Steam page for the requirements of a live build.
