PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) is Sony’s AI-based image-upscaling technology for supported PS5 Pro games. It reconstructs detail as a game image is upscaled, which can make fine features clearer and images steadier in motion. It does not mean a game is rendered natively at its final display resolution, and it does not guarantee a frame-rate increase: results depend on the game and how its developers implement the feature.

What PSSR does

Sony describes PSSR as an AI library that analyzes each frame pixel by pixel while upscaling game visuals. In practical terms, it estimates and reconstructs image detail for the output picture. It does not create new game assets or change the game’s art direction.

The intended benefit is to help a game produce a clearer image without requiring every pixel of that output image to be rendered directly by the game. Sony’s description does not establish a single internal or output resolution for all PSSR games; those details vary by title and are not specified in the announcements cited here.

How PSSR can improve PS5 Pro graphics

Fine-detail clarity

Reconstruction can help preserve details such as hair, foliage, shadows, edges on natural objects, and particle effects. Sony and participating developers have cited these as areas where the newer PSSR can improve apparent clarity. Those examples are vendor and developer descriptions, not independent measurements of every game.

Image stability in motion

Upscaling has to handle changes between frames as objects move or become visible. Sony says the updated PSSR improves motion stability. Remedy Entertainment Graphics Technical Director Tatu Aalto also said the upgrade improves “image upscaling quality and stability.” Neither statement promises that all flicker, shimmer, ghosting, or other artifacts disappear.

More room to balance image quality and performance

Sony says the updated reconstruction gives developers more flexibility to balance performance and visual fidelity on PS5 Pro. That is not the same as a guaranteed FPS boost. The cited announcements provide no universal frame-rate increase, and a game’s chosen graphics modes and implementation determine the result.

Does PSSR render games at native resolution?

No. PSSR is an upscaling and reconstruction method, not a promise that the game renders every frame natively at the display’s resolution. The final image may be presented at a higher resolution than the game’s internal rendering resolution, with PSSR reconstructing detail along the way. Sony’s announcements do not publish internal-resolution figures for every supported title, so check a specific game’s documentation or controlled analysis if that number matters to you.

Does PSSR increase FPS?

Not necessarily. PSSR can be part of a developer’s approach to balancing visual quality and performance, but Sony has not stated a general FPS uplift that applies to all games. A title may use reconstruction to target a particular output image, frame rate, or graphics mode; the outcome depends on its settings and implementation. Treat any FPS claim as specific to a named game, mode, and comparison rather than a property of PSSR alone.

Which games support PSSR?

Sony said on February 27, 2026, that PSSR had boosted effective resolution in more than 50 PS5 Pro titles. That is Sony’s dated adoption figure, not an independently verified count or a claim that all of those games use the upgraded version.

Sony’s March 16, 2026 announcement named these games as adopting or upgrading to improved PSSR: SILENT HILL 2, SILENT HILL f, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Control, Alan Wake 2, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Nioh 3, Rise of the Ronin, Monster Hunter Wilds, and Dragon’s Dogma 2. Sony also said Crimson Desert would adopt it at launch and that Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Cyberpunk 2077 would receive patches in the following weeks. These are statements from that announcement; check the game’s current update information for its latest support status.

Resident Evil Requiem was the first game Sony identified as using the upgraded PSSR, announced February 27, 2026. Individual game support, patch status, and the version of PSSR in use can differ.

What changed in the upgraded PSSR?

Sony announced an upgraded PSSR on February 27, 2026, and said the algorithm and neural network stem from Project Amethyst, its AI graphics partnership with AMD. Sony described the updated version as more precise in image reconstruction, more stable in motion, and more flexible for developers. The broad rollout of improved PSSR was announced for March 16, 2026.

PSSR on PS5 Pro versus QSSR on standard PS5

These are distinct technologies, not two names for the same feature. PSSR is Sony’s PS5 Pro upscaling library. On October 1, 2026, Sony announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) for standard PS5, describing it as a separate performance tier of AI upscaling built with a streamlined neural network and hand-tuned implementation. Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei were its first announced titles.

Sony’s Daniel Craig, Principal Engineer, Graphics R&D, said QSSR provides “some notable improvements to both image detail and image stability on PS5.” That is Sony’s description of QSSR, not evidence that standard PS5 runs PS5 Pro PSSR. Sony characterizes PS5 Pro PSSR as the higher-quality tier.

How to judge PSSR in a particular game

Because there is no standardized head-to-head result across games, compare the same game and scene on the same display rather than relying on the feature name alone. Look at:

  • Fine details such as hair, grass, and thin edges.
  • Shimmer or flicker while the camera or objects move.
  • Ghosting or artifacts around motion and changes in visibility.
  • The game’s internal and output resolutions, if the developer discloses them.
  • Frame-rate mode and how consistently the game holds its target.
  • Whether the title uses original PSSR or the upgraded version, and whether an optional image-quality setting is enabled.

Sony’s PS5 Pro product guide lists an AMD Zen 2 CPU, an AMD Radeon RDNA-based graphics engine, a 2 TB custom SSD, and a disc-drive port. Those hardware specifications do not by themselves quantify PSSR’s image-quality gains. Sony notes that specifications may change and operation may depend on software version.
