Request your Instagram information in Accounts Center
Instagram’s export is managed through Meta Accounts Center. The menu names and arrangement can change, so use the current choices shown in your account. Recent step-by-step guides describe this route on desktop and mobile:
- Open Instagram and open the menu from your profile.
- Go to Accounts Center.
- Select Your information and permissions, then Download your information.
- Choose the Instagram profile you want to export.
- Choose the information to include, the destination, and any date-range or file options displayed.
- Review your choices and submit the request to create the export files.
The Missouri Secretary of State’s July 2024 guide describes this workflow in its Instagram browser guide. Zapier’s May 2024 guide also covers the Accounts Center route on desktop and mobile. Because both guides predate this article, treat their labels as guidance rather than a guarantee of the exact current screen.
Choose what to include and where to save it
Choose the export scope
If Accounts Center offers the choice, request all available information for a broad archive, or select particular categories when you only need certain data. Meta lists photos, videos, messages, and timeline posts as examples of content users can obtain with Download Your Information. The categories offered can vary, so check the options in your own account rather than assuming every item or historical version will be included. Choose a destination
Choose a download to your device if you want a local archive you can store yourself. If the current interface offers a transfer to another service, use it only if that destination suits your purpose. Zapier’s 2024 guide describes both device downloads and transfers; availability and destination choices depend on the options currently shown in Accounts Center.
Review date and file options
Use the date range and file or media settings offered on the request screen. The Missouri guide recommended HTML and high media quality in 2024, but those were that guide’s instructions, not requirements that apply to every current export. Follow the choices and explanations Instagram presents for your request.

Wait for the archive, then download it promptly
Creating the export is not necessarily immediate. The Missouri guide reports that collection may take up to 14 days and that the download link stays active for four days; Zapier reports up to two weeks to prepare and a four-day download window. These are source-reported expectations, not guaranteed deadlines. Follow the timing and expiration information in Instagram’s current notification or export screen, and download the archive as soon as it is ready.

After downloading, save the archive in a location you control and can find again. If the information matters, consider keeping a second copy, such as on a separate backup drive. Extra hardware is optional; Instagram’s export does not require a special device. Avoid third-party tools that ask for your Instagram credentials when the built-in Accounts Center export meets your needs.

Meta’s Privacy Tools and Information Security overview describes the ability to “Easily access, manage, download or delete the personal data you’ve provided.” The export is one way to keep a copy; the categories and contents available are determined by the options Instagram provides for your account.
