The key difference is when you make decisions. In a card autobattler, you usually recruit and arrange a team during a preparation phase, then let combat play out automatically or with limited input. In a deck-building roguelike, you shape a deck over a run and commonly choose and play cards during each encounter. Some games blend both approaches.
What are you building?
An autobattler typically centers on a lineup or board of units, not a conventional deck. In Hearthstone Battlegrounds, for example, players recruit minions and develop an evolving board. Blizzard’s 2019 introduction described an eight-player mode in which players visit Bob’s Tavern at the start of a match and between combat rounds. Blizzard’s announcement is a useful illustration of the format, though it is not a current rules guide.
A roguelike deck-builder focuses on assembling a deck over the course of a run. Cards are selected to work together, and choices about what to add—or which rewards and routes to pursue—shape later encounters. Nintendo describes Slay the Spire in these terms: each attempt builds a unique deck, with cards chosen to work together against foes. Nintendo’s game description provides an official example.
When do you make decisions?
In an autobattler, many consequential choices happen before a fight. You may recruit, combine, upgrade, or position units during a shop or preparation phase, then see how that setup performs. In a deck-building roguelike, choices are spread across the run: you select cards and other rewards, and make decisions during encounters as well.

The contrast is about emphasis, not a rule that every game follows. A particular autobattler may allow some intervention during combat, while a deck-builder can include tactical layers beyond playing cards.
How does combat work?
An autobattler’s defining rhythm is preparation followed by combat that resolves largely on its own. The player’s tactical influence comes mainly from the team assembled and its arrangement before the round.

In a conventional roguelike deck-builder, the player commonly chooses and plays cards during combat. The deck is both a product of earlier run decisions and the set of tools used to respond to the current encounter.

These are common patterns, not requirements. Genre labels describe a game’s dominant loop; they do not guarantee a particular player count, degree of control, or structure.

Where do the genres overlap?
Some games explicitly combine run-based deck construction with automated battles. Hadean Tactics, for instance, is described on its Steam store page as a roguelike deck-building game fused with autobattler elements. That is a useful example of a hybrid, not a universal definition of either genre.
There are also deck-builders with additional battlefield tactics. Nintendo describes Monster Train as a roguelike deck-builder with three vertical battlegrounds, with a fresh challenge on each playthrough. Its official listing shows why “deck-builder” does not necessarily mean a simple card-only presentation.

A 2022 AAAI paper on auto-battler card balance treats auto battlers as similar in some ways to deck-building collectible card games and notes the role of games including Hearthstone Battlegrounds in refining the genre. That is a useful research framing, rather than a formal taxonomy.

Which kind should you try?
- Choose an autobattler if you enjoy drafting or arranging a team, making a plan before a round, and watching the result resolve.
- Choose a roguelike deck-builder if you enjoy shaping a deck over a run and selecting cards to respond to encounters.
- Look for a hybrid if you want run-based deck construction alongside battles that largely resolve automatically.
