Your influence is indirect but meaningful: choices about recruits, resources, synergies, items, and formation shape what happens in combat. The label is descriptive, not a promise that every game uses the same rules.
How turns work in a card autobattler
A typical round alternates between planning and combat. You make decisions while preparing; the game then resolves the fight without you issuing commands to each unit. Afterward, the result can inform the choices you make in a later round. The precise timing, economy, and consequences of a loss depend on the game.
- Recruit or draft: Choose units from the options the game presents, such as a shop or a shared draft pool.
- Build a team: Decide which units to keep and look for useful combinations among their traits, abilities, or items.
- Spend and position: Use available in-game resources and arrange your team to meet the opposing formation.
- Watch combat resolve: Units fight automatically, so your main decisions happen before or between battles rather than through moment-to-moment commands.
- Adapt: Use the outcome and the options available in the next preparation phase to adjust your approach.
For example, a player might recruit a unit that completes a team combination, rearrange the formation to change how the teams meet, and then watch the battle play out. The exact choices and their effects vary by title.
What strategy do you control if battles are automatic?
Automatic combat does not remove strategy; it shifts much of it to decisions made before the fight. You are choosing the ingredients and arrangement of the team, not controlling every action it takes once combat begins.

- Positioning: Where units stand can affect how your formation meets an opponent’s.
These are useful strategy questions to ask, not a universal checklist of mechanics. A particular game may emphasize some and handle others differently.
How Teamfight Tactics and Hearthstone Battlegrounds illustrate the genre
Both are official examples of auto-battling team strategy, but they present the preparation phase differently. Riot Games describes Teamfight Tactics (TFT) as a round-based PvP game where players draft a team that battles automatically. Its explainer identifies shared-pool drafting, team building, economy management, items, and positioning as strategic elements. Read Riot Games’ Teamfight Tactics explainer.

Blizzard describes Hearthstone Battlegrounds as an eight-player auto-battling mode in which players recruit minions, build a board, and face a series of duels. Its announcement says players can place minions and change their positions between combat phases. Read Blizzard’s Battlegrounds announcement.
| Example | What the official description establishes | Useful distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Teamfight Tactics | Round-based PvP; draft a team that fights automatically; strategy includes shared-pool drafting, team building, economy, items, and positioning. | Champion and team composition alongside economy decisions. |
| Hearthstone Battlegrounds | Hearthstone auto-battling mode; recruit a board of minions, duel, and position minions between combat phases. | Tavern recruitment and minion-card board building. |
These descriptions establish examples, not a complete rulebook for either live game. For an up-to-date comparison, check each game’s current rules: what you draft or buy, how resources work, whether and when units can be repositioned, how synergies and items function, how combat resolves, and whether opponents are fought synchronously or asynchronously.

What “card” means—and what it does not
In “card autobattler,” the word “card” can refer to the units or the interface used to present choices. It does not mean every game follows identical collectible-card rules. TFT and Battlegrounds illustrate related approaches: one is described around drafting a team of champions, while the other is described around recruiting minions onto a board.
So the most reliable way to understand a specific title is to look at its own preparation and combat phases, rather than assuming that another game’s economy, life system, round structure, or positioning rules apply.
