Then compare the total price with recent completed sales of the same figure in comparable condition. No single signal—such as a certificate, sealed box, seller reputation, platform check, or listing photo—proves authenticity or condition.
1. Confirm the exact figure and edition
Start by pinning down what the listing claims to be: maker, character or model, release, edition, colorway, and number where applicable. Compare those details with credible references for that specific product. Authentication cues differ among designer vinyl toys, boxed character figures, statues, and other collectibles; there is no universal marker that establishes authenticity for every figure.
Ask for current photographs of the actual item rather than relying on stock images. Request clear views of labels, marks, the base, and any edition number that the model carries. Sideshow’s guidance for purchases from unofficial sellers or online auctions says: “Request pictures of the item out of the box, including pictures of the base and the edition number.” That is practical inspection advice, not an independent authentication service. 2. Inspect condition and completeness for that category
Ask for sharp, well-lit photos from every side, plus close-ups of the face, paint, joints, base, seams, and any known weak points for that particular model. Check whether the listing discloses repairs, repainting, damage, discoloration, loose parts, or other changes. Separate the figure’s condition from the box’s condition: box wear may matter to value, but it does not by itself describe the state of the figure inside.

Verify the original contents for the exact release, then check the listing for each part. Depending on the figure, that can include accessories, inserts, certificates, the box, and internal packaging. Marketplace condition rules are category-specific rather than a universal collectible grade. For example, StockX’s guidance requires Funko Pop figures to have the original box and internal packaging, and Bearbricks to have their original box and interior packaging. 3. Assess provenance and the seller’s evidence
Ask where and when the seller acquired the figure, and request supporting records if its ownership history matters to you. Treat receipts, provenance, and certificates as corroborating information rather than conclusive proof; compare their details with the item and listing. Review the seller’s history for relevant collectible sales, consistency in descriptions, and responsiveness to specific questions. A strong seller history can inform your judgment, but it cannot establish the condition or authenticity of this individual item.

If a grading service has certified this particular collectible, look up its certification number and compare the database record with both the listing and the item. CGC says its lookup can confirm a certified collectible’s grade and description, and may show images for some collectibles. This applies only where the figure is covered by that service; a database lookup is not a universal authentication method for figures. CGC Guarantee
4. Understand what platform verification or guarantees cover
Read the exact policy for the platform and the item category before treating a marketplace check as protection. Confirm whether the service applies to this listing, what it checks, how disputes are handled, and what remedy is available. The word “verified” does not necessarily mean that a platform authenticated the figure or assessed its grade.

For example, Fanatics Collect describes its guarantee in relation to whether the delivered item matches its listing image, description, and certificate number. The platform says it does not grade collectibles or warrant that they are correctly graded or authenticated. 5. Confirm returns, inspection, and shipping protection
Read the seller’s own written return policy before paying, including the deadline, procedure, and conditions for returning an item that is misdescribed, arrives damaged, or appears suspect. Check whether you can inspect the figure after delivery and whether opening a sealed package affects your return rights. Do not assume a manufacturer’s or retailer’s policy covers an item bought from an outside seller: Sideshow states that its 30-day exchange and return policy does not apply to collectibles purchased from third-party or unauthorized sellers. Before checkout, establish who is responsible if the carrier damages the package, what evidence is required for a claim, and whether shipping insurance is included or must be arranged separately. Keep the listing, messages, payment details, and delivery records so you can document what was promised and what arrived.

Use recent completed sales, not just current asking prices. The strongest comparisons match the same figure, edition, and colorway, with similar condition and completeness. Adjust your judgment for box and internal packaging, provenance, location, shipping, and platform or transaction fees. If you cannot find close matches, treat the asking price as uncertain rather than inferring a market value from unrelated releases or optimistic listings.

No figure-specific sale or price history is established here, so there is no supported estimate to apply across rare figures. The value depends on the particular model and the evidence available for comparable sales.
7. Compare listings on the same evidence
When choosing between two listings, evaluate each against the same questions rather than letting one attractive feature decide the purchase:
- Identity and edition: Do the actual-item photos and product details support the claimed model, maker, release, and edition?
- Condition and completeness: Are there useful views of the figure, and are all expected parts and packaging accounted for?
- Seller and provenance: Is the seller’s relevant history clear, and does any ownership evidence align with the listing?
- Protection: Are return terms, platform checks, and shipping remedies written down and applicable to this item?
- Total cost: How does the price after fees and shipping compare with completed sales for the same release and condition?
A listing with more documentation is not automatically the safer or better-value choice. Judge the evidence, policy scope, and total cost together, and pause if a seller will not provide basic photos or clear transaction terms.
