Choose SpaceX’s Transporter rideshare if its available orbit, timing, and shared-payload requirements fit your mission. Evaluate a dedicated small-satellite launch when precise deployment, mission-specific timing, or special payload accommodations are valuable enough to justify a higher likely cost. The meaningful comparison is not simply launch price: it is whether each service can deliver your spacecraft to the orbit and schedule your mission needs.

First, distinguish a dedicated rideshare from a dedicated launch

NASA defines a rideshare as a launch carrying multiple spacecraft in which a primary spacecraft may set the mission requirements and secondary payloads use remaining launch capacity. NASA also uses “dedicated rideshare” for a launch manifest made up entirely of small satellites. SpaceX’s Transporter missions are dedicated rideshares; a dedicated small-launch vehicle, by contrast, can be procured for a customer’s mission. The word “dedicated” does not mean the same thing in both cases. NASA’s launch overview explains the distinction.

With rideshare, the central question is whether your spacecraft can accept the orbit and timing offered by the manifest. A dedicated vehicle can offer more tailored access or accommodations, but NASA identifies the tradeoffs as smaller manifests, lower launch frequency, and significantly higher price points. NASA’s comparison of launch options describes those tradeoffs.

Compare the factors that can change the decision

Orbit and deployment precision

Write down the required altitude, inclination, orbital plane, and deployment sequence before seeking quotes. If the offered rideshare orbit works, Transporter may be a fit. If the spacecraft needs a specific or unusual placement, assess a dedicated launch or an additional orbital-transfer service.

Hasegawa 1:48 Scale Voyager Unmanned Space Probe Model Kit
  • Model Kit
  • May Require Paints and Glues to Assemble
  • Accurate Scale Model
  • Detailed Instructions Provided
  • Decals/Transfers Included

Rocket Lab says Electron’s kick stage can support precise or unique orbits, deployment to multiple planes or inclinations, higher-altitude deployment, and multiple trajectory changes. These are provider-described capabilities, not a promise that every requested orbit is available on every mission. Rocket Lab’s Electron page lists these capabilities.

Launch readiness and schedule

Compare your spacecraft’s actual flight-readiness date with the launch opportunity each provider can offer, and put a value on the impact of waiting. NASA says dedicated small launch vehicles may allow faster scheduling, but also have lower launch frequency. Neither point establishes a guaranteed date for an individual customer; ask about the available slot and the contractual treatment of delays. NASA’s launch overview covers the general tradeoff.

Total mission cost, not headline price

NASA’s 2026 launch chapter reports a SpaceX Transporter starting price of $350,000 for approximately 50 kg. Treat that as a published entry point, not an all-in quote for your spacecraft. Interface hardware, integration, services, orbit, and customer-specific conditions can affect the mission price. NASA’s 2026 launch chapter is the source for the starting figure.

No directly comparable current Electron price is established here. Request mission-specific quotes from providers or a qualified integrator, using the same spacecraft, target orbit, interface, and service scope. Include any required deployment or orbit-transfer services so a low initial launch figure is not mistaken for the cost of the complete mission.

Payload fit and special accommodations

Confirm mass and dimensions, payload interface, environmental limits, and deployment hardware. Also disclose any special handling needs, such as purge requirements or late battery charging. NASA says such accommodations are generally unavailable on rideshare missions, though they may sometimes be included as standard or for an additional cost. NASA’s launch overview discusses these constraints.

Integration responsibility

NASA describes integration as involving the launch provider, spacecraft manufacturer, customer, launch range, and sometimes a broker or integrator. Before comparing prices, establish who owns each interface, verification task, and schedule dependency. NASA’s launch overview outlines the parties involved.

What published capacity figures do—and do not—tell you

Rocket Lab lists Electron payload to low Earth orbit (LEO) at 300 kg. NASA’s 2026 table lists Electron performance to LEO at 200 kg. The cited sources do not reconcile the difference, so neither figure should be treated as a directly comparable payload guarantee for a particular mission. Ask the provider to confirm performance for your orbit and configuration. Rocket Lab’s Electron page and NASA’s 2026 launch chapter give their respective figures.

The broader launch market provides context, not a prediction of your mission’s price or service quality. NASA’s 2026 report says 4,577 spacecraft launched in 2025, nearly 60% more than in 2024; approximately 70% of the 2025 spacecraft were Starlink satellites. Among the remaining spacecraft, 45% had a mass of 200 kg or less. These figures describe the launch mix and do not establish customer costs, savings, or reliability. NASA’s 2026 launch chapter reports them.

Examples show both services in use, not which one is better

NASA’s schedule records R5 S10 launching on SpaceX Transporter-16 on March 30, 2026, and R5 S9 on Transporter-17 on July 7, 2026. It also records a DiskSat launch aboard Rocket Lab Electron on December 18, 2025. These examples confirm use of both service types; they do not prove comparative reliability or show that either option suits every spacecraft. NASA’s launch records list the missions.

A practical way to request comparable offers

  1. Specify the mission: Provide spacecraft mass and dimensions, target altitude and inclination, required orbital plane, deployment sequence, and any special handling needs.
  2. State the schedule: Give the flight-readiness date and explain the operational or financial impact of a later launch.
  3. Request the same scope: Ask each provider or integrator to price the same orbit, interface, integration responsibilities, and deployment or transfer services.
  4. Confirm the accommodation and performance: Get written confirmation of payload fit, mission-specific launch capability, and who performs each integration and verification task.
  5. Compare mission value, not just price: Weigh the complete quoted cost and schedule against the value of the orbit, timing, and accommodations each option can actually provide.

NASA’s assessment captures the cases where dedicated ascent may matter: “Flying a spacecraft as a dedicated payload is the best method of ascent for missions that need a specific orbit, near full utilization of available launch vehicle performance, interplanetary trajectories, precisely timed rendezvous, or special environmental considerations.” NASA also states the tradeoff: “The trade-off is higher cost: dedicated launches have smaller manifests, lower launch frequency, and significantly higher price points compared to rideshare options.” Both statements come from NASA’s Small Spacecraft Technology State of the Art 2026 launch chapter.
