It depends on the game: some mobile card games require an internet connection to play, while offline access may be limited to non-match features. Blizzard says Hearthstone needs internet for play, though players can access parts of their collection offline. Riot says no part of Legends of Runeterra is available offline. Neither publisher’s cited information gives a numerical estimate for mobile data used during gameplay.
Can you play a mobile card autobattler offline?
There is no single rule for every mobile card game. Check the publisher’s current requirements for the specific title: a game may require a connection to start, to play matches, or for all of its features.
Hearthstone
Blizzard’s April 14, 2015 mobile announcement says Hearthstone requires an internet connection to play. Blizzard also explains that players in a disconnected state can access their collection offline. Its support guidance describes collection-management functions such as viewing cards and creating or editing decks. That limited access does not mean matches can be played without a connection.
Legends of Runeterra
Riot Games Support’s September 21, 2023 support article says Legends of Runeterra requires online access and that no part of it is available offline. Availability and requirements can change, so check the current official support information before relying on this for a trip.

Does Hearthstone work without Wi-Fi?
It requires an internet connection to play, but Wi-Fi itself is not required if another working connection is available. For mobile connection problems, Blizzard recommends making sure the app is up to date and switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data. These are troubleshooting steps, not a way to play offline. See Blizzard’s connection troubleshooting guidance.
Can you play these games on a plane?
Only if the specific game supports the activity you want to do without a live connection. Hearthstone’s offline collection access is not offline match play; Riot says no part of Legends of Runeterra is available offline. Do not assume airplane mode or an in-flight connection will support a particular game: the publisher’s requirements and the connection available on the flight determine what works.

How much mobile data does a card game use?
The official information cited here does not give a numerical estimate for gameplay data use. It establishes connection requirements, not how many megabytes a match consumes. A figure for one game should not be treated as typical for all card autobattlers.
A useful per-game estimate would need to specify the title and version, device, game mode, and measurement period, with data measured during that test. Without those details and a source, a per-hour figure is not reliable.

What to check before relying on offline play
- Check whether the game requires internet to launch, to play matches, or to use every feature.
- Look for specific offline features, such as collection or deck access, rather than relying on a general claim that the game “works offline.”
- Confirm current requirements with the publisher, especially before traveling; features and service requirements can change.
- Do not assume offline changes or progress will sync later unless the publisher explicitly confirms it.
