Short answer: PSSR and AMD FSR are related, but they are not established as the same technology. PSSR is Sony’s machine-learning upscaler for supported PS5 Pro games; Sony says the upgraded PSSR algorithm and neural network stem from its Project Amethyst collaboration with AMD, which also produced FSR 4. That shared development does not make the technologies interchangeable, and official material does not establish a universal image-quality winner.
What are PSSR and AMD FSR?
PSSR is Sony’s PS5 Pro upscaler
PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) is a machine-learning-based upscaling feature Sony introduced with PS5 Pro. In supported games, it reconstructs an image for higher-resolution output; Sony describes compatible games as capable of AI-enhanced 4K output on a 4K TV. Output resolution does not mean the game renders every frame natively at 4K. Sony’s PS5 Pro product information describes the feature and its platform context.

FSR is AMD’s upscaling family
AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) is a family of upscaling technologies. The version matters: Sony specifically identifies FSR 4 as a PC-facing result of its collaboration with AMD. “FSR” on its own does not identify a single implementation or imply that every FSR version is available on every platform.
Is PSSR the same as FSR 4?
No evidence in Sony’s announcement says PSSR and FSR 4 are identical software, use the same model, or can be substituted for one another. Sony’s Mark Cerny said the upgraded PSSR algorithm and neural network stem from its Project Amethyst partnership with AMD, and named FSR 4 as another outcome of that collaboration. The accurate description is a shared development relationship, not “PSSR is FSR 4 on PlayStation.” Sony’s February 2026 announcement explains that relationship.

How do PSSR and FSR compare?
| Question | PSSR | AMD FSR |
|---|---|---|
| Where is it used? | PS5 Pro, in games that support it. | Implementation depends on the FSR version, game, and platform; check the specific game’s documentation and settings. |
| What is the relationship? | Sony says the upgraded algorithm and neural network stem from Project Amethyst with AMD. | Sony points to FSR 4 as a PC-facing outcome of the collaboration. The cited material does not establish that it is identical to PSSR. |
| How is image reconstruction described? | Sony describes PSSR as AI-driven and machine-learning-based; its February 2026 description says it analyzes images pixel by pixel as it upscales them. | The available official material here does not establish current, version-by-version implementation details or hardware requirements. |
| Is one proven to look better? | Sony and developers report improvements in selected supported games, but these are not matched independent comparisons with FSR. | No controlled, same-game, same-scene PSSR-versus-FSR benchmark is established in the cited official material. |
The comparison is therefore most useful at the game-and-platform level, not as a blanket ranking of two labels. Upscaling is integrated by the game developer, and a title can have different options, patches, or rendering modes on different platforms.
What image-quality improvements have developers reported?
Sony and developers describe qualitative, title-specific results rather than a universal measured gain. IO Interactive Technical Director Henrik Schlichter said upgraded PSSR gave 007 First Light a “meaningful jump in image quality” with cleaner, more stable images and sharper fine detail. That is the developer’s account of that game, not an independent PSSR-versus-FSR test.
Sony’s rollout guidance says results vary by title; it notes that many games may see improvements in clarity and image stability. Fine detail, flicker, and motion clarity are among the qualities discussed in Sony’s March 2026 rollout announcement. Treat these as reported outcomes in particular games, not a promise that every PSSR game will improve by the same amount.
Which games support upgraded PSSR?
PSSR support is specific to a game. Sony’s February 27, 2026 announcement said it had been used to boost the effective resolution of more than 50 PS5 Pro titles “to date.” That is Sony’s count as of that date, not a current total. Its March 16 rollout announcement named Silent Hill f, Monster Hunter Wilds, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Crimson Desert, and more, while later title-specific announcements discussed games such as 007 First Light. Check the game’s current patch notes and graphics settings for availability on your platform; the list and options can change as developers update games.

Enhanced PSSR is an optional setting
For games that already support PSSR, Sony introduced an optional “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” setting on PS5 Pro. It is not a switch that adds PSSR to unsupported games. Sony cautions that results can vary by title and says players can turn the setting off if they encounter unexpected visual effects. The rollout announcement describes the setting and its scope.

- Match the conditions. Compare the same game, platform, patch, graphics mode, and display settings where possible. A comparison between different modes or builds cannot isolate the upscaler.
- Separate the outcomes. Note internal rendering resolution, reconstructed output resolution, frame rate, and image stability individually. A 4K output label alone does not establish native 4K rendering.
- Check motion as well as still images. Look for shimmer or flicker on thin geometry and foliage, and watch hair, particles, and moving detail for ghosting or instability. These are useful inspection points, not a claim that either technology necessarily exhibits them.
- Try the supported options. If the game offers an upscaling or enhanced-PSSR toggle, compare it in the same scene and mode. Disable Sony’s enhanced-PSSR option if it introduces unexpected visual effects in your title.
- Use the game’s own support information. Check graphics settings and current patch notes for the exact version available on your platform; support cannot be inferred just from the PSSR or FSR name.
Does the base PS5 have PSSR?
No. Sony’s October 1, 2026 announcement introduces Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), a separate performance-tier AI upscaling library for base PS5. Sony distinguishes it from PSSR on PS5 Pro; do not assume that the two consoles use the same implementation. Sony describes QSSR as intended to improve image detail and stability on base PS5, but that is the company’s own positioning, not an independent comparison. Sony’s QSSR announcement provides the scope.
Does using PSSR require a new 4K TV?
Sony describes PSSR output on a 4K TV, but its product information does not establish that replacing a display is required solely to use the feature. The PS5 Pro’s hardware figures are also separate from an upscaler comparison: Sony’s 2024 launch announcement said the console had 67% more GPU compute units and 28% faster memory than the then-current PS5, with up to 45% faster gameplay rendering. Those are Sony’s console-level specifications and claim, not a PSSR-versus-FSR benchmark. See Sony’s PS5 Pro announcement for context.
