For classroom supplies, DonorsChoose arranges reviewed purchases and delivery to school, while AdoptAClassroom.org gives educators marketplace credit. GoFundMe transfers money through a general-purpose fundraiser. Their fee models and controls differ, but none of these platforms overrides a school or district’s rules: check local approval and student-consent requirements before launching.
How the three platforms move donations
| Platform | What happens after a donation | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| DonorsChoose | Teachers request specific resources. DonorsChoose reviews projects, purchases funded materials and ships them to a verified school address; it does not send cash to teachers. Materials belong to the public school classroom. | A teacher who wants a defined supply list and platform-managed purchasing and delivery. |
| AdoptAClassroom.org | Educators receive account credit to select supplies from its marketplace of 20+ education and school-supply vendors. Goods ship to school and belong to the school. Credit is not cash. | An educator who wants to choose supplies through a participating-vendor marketplace. |
| GoFundMe | A personal fundraiser’s proceeds transfer to the organizer’s personal bank account or an associated organization’s account. The platform does not direct donations into a classroom supply order. | A broader fundraising need where the organizer and school have agreed how money will be received and spent. |
DonorsChoose says an average of 75% of project funds comes from outside a teacher’s personal network; this is a platform-reported average, not a promise about an individual project. DonorsChoose administrator guidance.

Which teacher fundraising platform has the lowest fees?
There is no single like-for-like answer: the platforms handle funds differently, and optional contributions are not the same as processing fees. The figures below reflect the cited official pages, accessed or updated in 2026; check the linked terms before starting a campaign.
| Platform | Fee information | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| DonorsChoose | Its financial page suggests a 15% optional donation to support operations, which donors can reduce or remove. The page also describes a standard 1.5% processing fee in a project-cost example. | The 15% is not an unavoidable deduction from every donation to the teacher. DonorsChoose buys and ships requested items rather than transferring a cash balance. Payment-processing costs depend on transaction context. DonorsChoose financials. |
| AdoptAClassroom.org | Its donor FAQ says classroom and school donations have no mandatory fee and educators receive 100% of donations. | This describes its donation-fee claim, not every possible cost. Its separately governed Teacher Choice Purchase route for purchases outside the marketplace may involve an administrative fee; consult the Teacher Choice Purchase policy. AdoptAClassroom donor FAQ. |
| GoFundMe | For a US personal fundraiser, the listed transaction fee is 2.9% plus $0.30 per donation. Starting and managing the fundraiser is free; donors may add an optional tip. | This fee is specific to US personal fundraisers. Country, recurring donations, nonprofit campaigns and GoFundMe Pro may have different terms. The organizer cannot see whether a donor tipped. GoFundMe fee details and pricing. |
AdoptAClassroom.org reports that 89% of its expenses went to its programs in fiscal year 2025. That is an organization-wide expense statistic, not a donation fee or a measure of the amount credited to an individual classroom. AdoptAClassroom donor FAQ.

Does a platform’s approval mean the school has approved the fundraiser?
No. Platform verification or project review is not district authorization. DonorsChoose says teachers must comply with school and district policies and secure necessary permissions. AdoptAClassroom distinguishes teacher Classroom Pages from public-facing School Pages: a teacher can create a Classroom Page without platform-required school permission, but remains responsible for local rules. A public-facing School Page for school fundraising requires an approval letter from the district or an appropriate senior-level executive. A non-public-facing School Page cannot be used for crowdfunding. DonorsChoose terms and AdoptAClassroom School Program FAQ.
Local policies vary. A 2024 North Carolina School Boards Association report found that, among 109 district respondents answering a question about whether policy required principal or superintendent approval, 40.4% said yes, 56.9% said their district had no policy, and 2.7% said no. Those figures describe that respondent group, not all US districts. NCSBA Schools and Crowdfunding report.
What to ask before launching
- Is this platform approved for school-related fundraising, and does this specific campaign need prior approval?
- Must an administrator review the campaign text, requested items, images or delivery address?
- Can proceeds enter a personal bank account, or must the school or an associated organization receive them?
- Who owns donated or purchased items, and can materials move if the teacher changes schools?
- Do purchasing, gift, conflict-of-interest or receiving rules apply?
- What written consent is required before using a student’s name, image or other identifying information?
Are classroom fundraiser donations private?
Do not assume a campaign is private merely because it concerns a classroom. DonorsChoose says teachers’ chosen display names and school information can appear publicly; classroom photos may appear with a project and when it is shared on social media. Its terms prohibit posting student pictures or information without express written parent or guardian permission, and its privacy policy also requires prior written permission for student photos. Review is an additional platform safeguard, not a substitute for permissions or school rules. DonorsChoose terms and privacy policy.
Rank #2
AdoptAClassroom.org describes student-privacy protections in its school program, as well as verification, purchase tracking and direct-to-school shipping. That does not remove the need to follow local consent and publication rules. AdoptAClassroom School Program FAQ. GoFundMe is a general-purpose fundraising service; the cited sources do not establish classroom-specific privacy protections, so do not infer them from general platform safeguards.
Which platform should a teacher choose?
- Choose DonorsChoose when the goal is a reviewed request for specific items and platform-managed purchasing and school delivery are important. Its administrator guidance says only teachers at verified schools can post projects, principals can receive shipment alerts, and records show what was shipped and when. Materials generally stay with the public school classroom if a teacher leaves; they may move only if the principal consents. Administrator guidance.
- Choose AdoptAClassroom.org when account credit and marketplace selection fit the school’s purchasing needs. Its teacher page says donations are available to use immediately and educators have up to one year to spend funds. A School Page has different approval requirements from a teacher Classroom Page. AdoptAClassroom for teachers and School Program FAQ.
- Consider GoFundMe when a general-purpose fundraiser is appropriate and the school has approved who controls the proceeds and how they will be used. Unlike the classroom-focused options, it does not itself set out a classroom supply marketplace or school-material ownership process in the cited sources. GoFundMe fundraiser types.
For direct purchases outside a platform, school purchasing rules may still apply; the comparison does not turn platform credit into unrestricted cash. The practical choice is the one whose money flow and ownership rules your school can approve.
