If you want something to play before Stranger Than Heaven, start with a Yakuza or Like a Dragon game: both are established series from Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, the developer of the upcoming game. That makes them the clearest connection, though it does not mean their combat will match Stranger Than Heaven’s new system.
Why RGG Studio games are the closest starting point
SEGA identifies Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio (RGG Studio) as the developer of Stranger Than Heaven and names Yakuza and Like a Dragon among the studio’s established series. If you want to get a feel for the developer’s character-focused storytelling and action-adventure approach, those are the natural places to start. This is a developer-lineage recommendation, not an official claim that any earlier game recreates the new title’s mechanics. SEGA’s RGG Studio announcement
Choose an entry that fits your taste
For a recognizable entry point, consider Yakuza 0. Check the platform and edition on the storefront you plan to use, since availability can vary. If you would rather explore the broader series, choose a Yakuza or Like a Dragon title whose format and platform suit you; the available official information does not establish a definitive title-by-title ranking for similarity to Stranger Than Heaven.
What kind of game is Stranger Than Heaven?
SEGA describes Stranger Than Heaven as an action-adventure about Makoto Daito, whose story unfolds over five decades, five eras, and five cities inspired by a Japan that might have been. The premise combines violent action with Makoto’s musical talent and his later work as a showman. SEGA’s game overview
#1 Best Overall
- Face Down Fate: San Francisco, 1915. Orphaned and persecuted for his mixed American and Japanese heritage, young Makoto Daito sneaks aboard a mysterious ship. Rejected by the United States, he risks everything to seek belonging in his mother’s homeland: Japan.
- 5 Eras, 5 Cities: The story unfolds across a version of Japan that may have existed in another life, immersing you in 5 sprawling cities: 1915, Kokura, Fukuoka; 1929, Kure, Hiroshima; 1943, Minami, Osaka; 1951, Atami, Shizuoka; and 1965, Shinjuku, Tokyo.
- Extreme Violence: Experience this struggle through the raw brutality of an evolving combat system that feels alive. You won't just control Makoto Daito, you'll become him—moving his left and right sides independently to attack, defend, and force your way to victory.
- Life of a Showman: Early on, Makoto's guide and mentor discovers his hidden talent for music, and before long, Makoto finds himself not only singing a tune or two but stepping into the role of a showman, producing a variety of incredible acts throughout all of Japan.
- Collector's Edition includes: STRANGER THAN HEAVEN Base Game (Xbox Series X|S or PlayStation 5), Deluxe Upgrade & Pre-Order Bonus DLC Codes, Exclusive SteelBook Case, Exclusive 12-Inch Vinyl Record, and Exclusive Collector’s Edition Box
The Xbox product page gives the locations and periods as 1915 Kokura, Fukuoka; 1929 Kure, Hiroshima; 1943 Minami, Osaka; 1951 Atami, Shizuoka; and 1965 Shinjuku, Tokyo. That span makes a crime-drama game from RGG Studio a reasonable pick if you are drawn to character-led stories and Japanese settings. It does not establish that another series entry depicts the same historical events or periods. Xbox’s Stranger Than Heaven product page
Pick based on what you want to play
| If you want… | Try… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Another game from the same studio | A Yakuza or Like a Dragon game | RGG Studio develops Stranger Than Heaven and is also associated with both established series. |
| An action-focused RGG game | An action-oriented Yakuza entry | It offers another way to explore the studio’s catalogue, but its mechanics may differ from the upcoming game’s flexible combat system. |
| A story-led crime drama | A Yakuza or Like a Dragon entry that appeals to you | The shared studio connection makes it a sensible choice for character-focused storytelling; no exact story or setting match is established. |
How Stranger Than Heaven’s combat has been described
SEGA describes the combat as highly flexible. In a June 11, 2026 Xbox Wire hands-on preview, author Jeff Rubenstein reported playing a demo across Fukuoka, Hiroshima, and Osaka and described independent left- and right-side attacks assigned to shoulder buttons and triggers. That is a preview account, not a claim about a personally tested build or a final version of the game. Xbox Wire’s hands-on preview

Because the new system is described in distinctive terms, pick an older RGG game for its own strengths rather than expecting its controls or combat to be a direct substitute.
