Choose the standalone option if you want to jump straight into the expansion; continue your save to reach its first main quest, Envoys, Wineboys.
Choose how you want to start
| Route | What happens | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Standalone expansion | Starts Blood and Wine separately from the main menu. | Starting the expansion without progressing an existing campaign. |
| Existing save | Continues your campaign; the first expansion main quest is Envoys, Wineboys. | Keeping your current character and story progress. |
CD PROJEKT RED confirms the standalone menu option remains available. Its expansion FAQ and official game page cover that route.
Start Blood and Wine from the main menu
- Launch The Witcher 3 and open the main menu.
- Choose the standalone Blood and Wine option.
- Start the expansion campaign when prompted.
This begins the expansion separately rather than sending you to find a quest in your current save. Choose it when you want a direct start and do not need to continue your existing campaign.
Start it on an existing save
Reach the expansion quest
Secondary quest references identify Envoys, Wineboys as the first main quest and associate its trigger with completing A Poet Under Pressure, then reading a notice on a Velen notice board. One reference names the notice “Appeal to Sir Geralt of Rivia, the Bridge his Crest.” These are in-game trigger details reported by quest references; CD PROJEKT RED’s current support information confirms the menu route but does not document this trigger. The quest reference and notice reference describe the steps.

Understand the suggested level
The Official Witcher Wiki lists level 34 as the suggested level for Envoys, Wineboys. That is guidance from a secondary reference, not a publisher-confirmed unlock requirement. The available publisher FAQ does not state a mandatory character level. Check the quest reference for its listed level.

CD PROJEKT RED says the two expansions are now included in the base game and instructs owners to update The Witcher 3 to the latest version to install them. The publisher also says standalone expansion products have been delisted and the Complete Edition has replaced the base game in digital storefronts; previous expansion owners retain the content in their library, patched into the base game, and saves remain compatible. PlayStation 4 and Xbox One owners can download the expansions for free. Check the current publisher FAQ for platform and ownership details if the content does not appear.

Nintendo Switch ownership note
For Nintendo Switch specifically, CD PROJEKT RED says the physical and digital Complete Editions include both major expansions, and that the physical game card contains all content. For other platforms, confirm the current listing and your library before buying; do not assume that the Switch packaging details apply elsewhere. See the Switch edition details.
