NBA teams use City Edition uniforms to tell stories about their cities, communities and franchise histories—not just to wear a different color. The NBA describes them as a way to express what makes each team distinctive and connect basketball on the court with local culture and fans.
What does City Edition mean in the NBA?
City Edition is a specific NBA uniform category. Each design is built around a story tied to a team’s city, community or history, and may depart from the team’s usual colors, symbols or typography. That makes it an alternate identity, but the term “alternate identity” is a useful description rather than the official name of every alternate uniform category.
Nike and the NBA describe the collection as a way for franchises to express what is distinctive about them. The league says Nike collaborates with teams, which bring knowledge of their fan bases to the design process. For the 2022-23 collection, that process began in July 2020, according to the NBA’s account of the designs.
Why do NBA teams have City Edition jerseys?
To tell stories beyond the team’s standard branding
A City Edition design can use places, symbols or traditions that connect a franchise to its home. For example, Detroit’s 2022-23 design drew on Saint Cecelia’s gym, while Chicago’s referenced the city’s Municipal Y symbol. The NBA’s design notes describe these as team-specific inspirations, not simply color changes.

To connect basketball with local culture and fans
The league and Nike have described the uniforms as a way to connect the court, community and culture, while engaging current and future fans. NBA team brand and uniform product lead Nadia Roohparvar said the uniforms stand for things important to each city and can help educate younger fans about a team and its city. Nike product director Jesse Alvarez said teams know their fan bases and shape designs through the lens of their stories. These are stated goals; the official explanations do not quantify whether the uniforms change fandom, viewership or sales.
To give fans another way to express team identity
City Edition apparel gives supporters another way to show their connection to a team, including through designs that reflect local references rather than only the franchise’s core look. Nike’s September 2026 announcement framed its Standard Issue fan apparel collection as connecting what athletes wear on court with fans’ devotion to their teams. That is a description of intent, not measured evidence of a particular commercial result.

How do City Edition designs differ from core uniforms?
Core uniforms foreground a team’s established brand. City Edition designs are organized around a city- or franchise-specific story, so colors, symbols and lettering may move further from the familiar look. The exact balance varies by team and season; official examples establish distinct inspirations, but do not rank designs by popularity or impact.
When comparing two designs, consider what identity each expresses, where its inspiration comes from, how much its visual elements depart from the core uniform, and which audience or fan connection the team says it hopes to reach. A design can be more unusual without being more meaningful to every fan.

Are City Edition uniforms still part of the NBA’s uniform landscape?
Uniform categories and merchandise offerings can change from season to season, so announcements about one collection should not be treated as proof that another category has disappeared league-wide. In a September 9, 2026 announcement, Nike described a Standard Issue collection of hoodies, pants, T-shirts and shorts, with launches scheduled for September 15 and October 12 at Nike.com, NBAStore.com and selected retailers. It also announced Specter Edition uniforms and apparel for eight franchises with roots in the NBA’s earliest chapters, planned for later in fall 2026 and inspired by franchise history, city heritage and fan culture.
Those details describe Nike’s announced 2026 offerings; they do not establish the status or availability of every team’s City Edition uniform. Availability is season-specific: the NBA’s 2023-24 City Edition page linked to NBAStore.com for that season, but that does not confirm that an older design remains in stock.

Do alternate jerseys increase sales or fan interest?
