Start with the exact matches you want to watch, then check which services carry them live in your country this season. Free-to-air TV can cover selected events without a subscription, while paid streaming may add matches or competitions that are missing from free coverage. Neither option guarantees every fixture, and following several sports can mean combining services.

What matters most: rights to the event, not the type of screen

Sports rights are split by country, competition, season, and package. A broadcaster or streaming service that shows one tournament—or some matches in a league—does not necessarily carry every fixture. Rights can also move between providers when contracts change, so check the current season’s official schedule for the specific event.

For each match or event, verify whether the listing means live coverage, a replay, highlights, or a delayed broadcast. Check territorial restrictions and any blackout rules that apply where you live. A service’s general claim to carry a sport is less useful than confirmation that it has the fixture you want.

Free-to-air TV and paid sports streaming compared

What to compare Free-to-air TV Paid sports streaming What to check
Cost No subscription charge for the broadcast itself; reception equipment or setup may still matter. Recurring service charge; more than one service may be needed for different competitions. Total monthly and annual spend, including subscriptions you already have. Prices depend on the country, service, and package; confirm current offers with providers.
Coverage Often selected events or packages. A broadcaster may also offer free catch-up coverage. May offer broader or exclusive coverage, depending on the rights and package. Exact fixtures and whether all, selected, or only certain rounds are included.
Live access A listed event is not necessarily shown live or in full. Packages may distinguish live matches from replays or highlights. Live status, territorial restrictions, and blackouts for the target event.
Setup Terrestrial reception commonly uses an antenna or digital TV receiver; signal availability depends on location. Requires a supported screen or device and internet access; viewing quality depends on the connection. Whether your home can receive local channels and whether your screen supports the service.
Rights and rules Public-service and listed-event rules can affect access in some countries. Contracts can change, shifting rights between providers and platforms. Current rights for your country and season, rather than an old provider list.

Free-to-air does not always mean complete or live coverage

Some countries have rules intended to protect free access to selected events, but those rules do not make all sport free or guarantee full live coverage. In Australia, the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) says broadcasters do not have to buy rights to events on the anti-siphoning list. If they do acquire rights, the rules do not dictate how they use them: coverage may be partial, delayed, or absent. Australia’s scheme has included online streaming services since 17 December 2024, and listed events are usually removed from the list six months before they occur. ACMA’s anti-siphoning guidance explains the scheme.

The UK’s current listed-events regime is different. Ofcom’s 2026 materials describe rules applying to linear broadcast services, including qualifying public-service channels that reach 95% of the population at no extra viewer cost. The rules protect access to specified events of national interest; they do not make every sport or match free. Ofcom said the updated regime under the Media Act 2024 is scheduled to take effect on 1 January 2027, extending to services used to show listed live coverage to UK audiences, including on-demand players and other internet streaming services. That change was future-effective as of 3 October 2026. Ofcom’s listed-events statement describes the planned change.

Australia: broadcaster catch-up and subscription services can overlap

ACMA’s 2024–25 report describes Seven launching 7plus Sport around the 2024 AFL Grand Final. Nine carried the 2024 Paris Olympics across Channel 9, 9Gem, and 9Now. These illustrate how free-to-air television and a broadcaster’s free online catch-up service can work together. ACMA reported about 4 million viewers for the 2024 AFL Grand Final on TV and 655,000 on 7plus; the report also cited VOZ figures of around 9.9 million people per day watching the 2024 Paris Olympics across Nine’s free-to-air and catch-up services over the two-week period. These are event-specific audience figures, not a measure of how many sports a free service carries. Read ACMA’s 2024–25 report.

The same report documents paid and mixed-rights examples from 2025: Prime Video streamed the Women’s ODI World Cup in September under an ICC rights agreement through 2027; football rights moved from Optus Sport to Stan Sport over July and August; Disney+ added live ESPN channels and on-demand sport in March; ESPN signed a multi-year NBL streaming agreement in August; selected Matildas and Socceroos matches were to appear on both free-to-air TV and Paramount+; and Kayo had a multi-year ESPN agreement covering named US sports. These dated examples do not establish the exact rights slate on any later date.

A separate future example is the NRL’s announcement of a seven-year deal beginning in 2028. The NRL says Foxtel will televise all NRL and NRLW Premiership and Finals matches; Nine will have exclusive NRL Grand Final and men’s and women’s State of Origin coverage and simulcast three weekly fixtures; and Sky NZ will put more than 130 fixtures on free platforms. This is a future-term announcement, not a description of 2026 availability. See the NRL’s announcement.

UK: free and paid coverage can coexist for one event

For the 2026 Winter Olympics, Ofcom said Warner Bros. Discovery would provide whole-Games live and on-demand coverage on discovery+ and live coverage on TNT Sports 2. The BBC would provide live coverage on BBC One or BBC Two and one additional stream at a time. Ofcom noted that the existing listed-events rules did not apply to discovery+ streaming coverage. The example shows why checking each service’s offer matters even when a major event has free coverage. Read Ofcom’s 2026 Olympics statement.

How to decide whether a subscription is worth it

  1. Make an event list. Write down the competitions, teams, and specific fixtures you care about, including whether you need live coverage or would accept replays.
  2. Check free coverage first. Look at local channel schedules and broadcaster catch-up services for your country and the current season. Do not treat a listed-event rule as a guarantee that a match will be shown.
  3. Map the remaining fixtures to services. Use rights-holder announcements and providers’ current schedules to confirm which service carries each event and what the package includes.
  4. Calculate the real cost. Add the recurring cost of the services you would actually need over the months you plan to watch. Include subscriptions you already pay for, but count them only if their current package includes the desired coverage.
  5. Compare cost with the missing coverage. If free services show enough of the events you want, an additional subscription may not be worthwhile. If important fixtures are exclusive or absent, weigh their value against the subscription cost and any commitment or cancellation terms.

Choose the setup that fits your home

For terrestrial free-to-air reception

A TV antenna or digital TV receiver may be needed for terrestrial channels, and reception depends on local signal conditions and your setup. An indoor TV antenna is one possible option, not a guarantee of reception. Check local coverage and your TV’s requirements before buying equipment.

For streaming

Streaming requires a supported screen or device and internet access. Check that the service works on the device you plan to use and that the event is available in your location. The evidence here does not establish a universal internet-speed threshold or guarantee picture quality; those depend on the service, device, and connection.

What viewing figures can—and cannot—tell you

ACMA reported that 91% of Australian adults used an online service to watch video content in a given week in 2025, 68% used paid subscription streaming services, 44% used free-to-air catch-up TV and streaming services, and 52% watched traditional free-to-air television, excluding catch-up. These are general viewing measures, not sport-only figures or proof that a particular sports subscription is worthwhile. ACMA also cited Deloitte research that three in four Australians watched sport every week in 2024; the statistic is attributed to Deloitte, as reported by ACMA, not to an ACMA survey. ACMA’s report provides the context for these figures.
