AI-powered customer research platforms can help teams plan studies, interview people, organize responses, and surface themes. Some also generate answers from synthetic respondents. Those are different evidence sources: an AI-moderated interview records what a person says, while a synthetic respondent produces a model-generated simulation. Neither an automated summary nor a larger volume of conversations removes the need to check the evidence and interpret it carefully.

What an AI-powered customer research platform does

Depending on the service, a platform may support some or all of the research process: framing questions, drafting an interview guide, recruiting or inviting participants, conducting interviews, transcribing responses, and synthesizing themes, quotations, or reports. Anthropic describes its Interviewer workflow as planning, interviewing, and analysis, with researchers refining the guide and validating themes. Outset describes guide setup, participant recruitment, interviews by video, voice, or text, and automated synthesis. These are vendor descriptions, not independent evidence that one platform is more accurate than another.

Check which functions a service actually includes. Study setup, recruitment, moderation, analysis, and reporting are separate jobs; a platform that automates one does not necessarily handle the others. Features, languages, modes, and availability can vary by vendor and geography. See Anthropic’s Interviewer description and Outset’s platform overview.

How AI interviews differ from synthetic respondents

AI-moderated interviews with people

A real participant provides the answers, while an AI moderator can adapt follow-up questions to what that person says. This differs from a fixed survey, where respondents generally see a set sequence of questions. YouGov says follow-ups can help capture the “why” behind an answer, such as what influenced an opinion or changed someone’s mind. The participant is real; the moderation is AI-assisted. Synthetic respondents and digital twins

A synthetic respondent is a model-generated simulation, not a newly interviewed customer. The model may be grounded in profiles, statistical information, earlier interviews, or other source material; methods differ, so the grounding and validation matter. Ipsos describes approaches including persona bots and synthetic populations. Outset says its digital twins are grounded in real people and traced to sources. Those descriptions do not make a simulated answer equivalent to a new participant’s testimony. See Ipsos’s discussion of AI conversations and Outset.

A practical workflow for using a platform

  1. Define the decision. Specify what the team needs to decide, which people could inform it, and what uncertainty the study should reduce. Anthropic says its researchers establish questions and goals before the system drafts a guide.
  2. Review the interview guide. Check that questions are understandable, neutral, appropriately ordered, and likely to elicit relevant answers. Researchers refine Anthropic’s AI-drafted guide before interviews; treat that review as part of the work, not an optional polish.
  3. Choose the evidence source. Decide whether you need new answers from recruited or invited people, analysis of existing customer evidence, or exploratory work with synthetic participants. Label the source clearly in notes and reports.
  4. Run the interviews or simulations. For interviews with people, an AI moderator may adapt follow-ups. Outset lists video, voice, and text modes; confirm the modes and languages available for your chosen service and participants.
  5. Inspect the underlying evidence. Review transcripts, quotations, sample composition, missing voices, and source traces. Check important themes against the responses: a summary may omit disagreement or make a theme seem more common than it is.
  6. Report the method and limits. State who participated, how they were recruited, when the study took place, which mode and method were used, and whether any respondents were synthetic. Keep a human researcher involved in interpreting the findings.

What studies say about quality—and what they do not

A 2019 field study involving about 600 participants compared a conversational chatbot survey with a conventional online survey. Its authors reported higher engagement and better-quality free-text answers in the chatbot condition. That result concerns the conversational-survey design tested; it does not establish that every AI interviewer improves response quality. See the 2019 study.

A 2026 pre-registered study compared AI-moderated interviews with 139 participants, human-moderated interviews with 24, and static interviews with 154, for 317 participants overall, working with three industry partners. The authors reported that AI moderation matched human moderation in interview depth and covered more themes, and that it recovered more customer needs at equal budget. Participants sounded more emotionally engaged with a live human. The study also found that digital twins predicted responses better than demographics-only personas, but richer AI-moderated source interviews did not improve quantitative predictions over static interviews. Prediction errors were associated with differences in thinking styles and questions outside the training data’s distribution. This is a promising, bounded preprint—not a universal platform benchmark. See Deng, Liu, Toubia, and Jain’s 2026 preprint.

Anthropic reports that its 2026 global research pilot used Interviewer with almost 81,000 people across 159 countries and 70 languages. Those figures describe that organization’s pilot; they do not establish the typical size or representativeness of a customer study. See Anthropic’s description.

These examples do not establish a cross-platform accuracy score or a universal performance statistic. Vendor claims about speed, cost, completion, or quality should be attributed to the vendor or study that reports them. A larger number of conversations can increase collection capacity, but volume alone does not prove representative sampling, valid measurement, or causal evidence.

Comparison area Questions to ask
Respondent source Are responses from recruited people, existing customers, uploaded historical material, synthetic respondents, or a mix?
Audience quality How are participants recruited, screened, verified, and described? Which groups may be missing?
Method fit Does the service support exploratory interviews, concept testing, usability work, surveys, or only some of these?
Interview control Can researchers review the guide, set probing rules, control skips, and intervene when needed?
Modality and access Are voice, text, or video available? Which languages, devices, and accessibility needs are supported?
Evidence traceability Can each theme, number, and quotation be traced to the original response, respondent source, and context?
Validation What human review, quality checks, or benchmark evidence support the outputs? What failure cases are known?
Data governance What participant notice, consent, retention, access, deletion, and model-training terms apply?
Total effort Account for researcher setup, recruitment, incentives, review, exports, and stakeholder reporting—not just the time needed to generate a summary.

Privacy and participant care

Participant notice, consent, and the ability to stop an interview are service-specific. YouGov’s participant guidance says an AI interview invitation is optional, participants receive a privacy and transparency notice before each interview, and they can leave during the conversation; it also warns that AI can make mistakes. Anthropic says participants are informed how their responses will be used. These are descriptions of particular services’ stated practices, not a substitute for checking another provider’s current privacy notice, contract, data-processing terms, retention settings, and consent process. See YouGov’s participant guidance and Anthropic’s description.

When synthetic research is useful

Synthetic respondents can support exploration and hypothesis generation when their grounding and validation fit the question. They should not be presented as newly interviewed customers, and their outputs should not be treated as direct customer evidence. For consequential claims or decisions, test the hypotheses with real people from the target audience and label simulated material separately in reports.
