Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To run compatible RAM at its advertised XMP or EXPO profile, enable that profile in your computer’s BIOS/UEFI, save the change, and verify the reported memory rate after reboot. RAM often starts at a standard JEDEC setting rather than its faster advertised profile, and applying XMP or EXPO is memory overclocking—not a guaranteed setting for every CPU, motherboard, and kit.
What XMP and EXPO do
XMP (Intel Extreme Memory Profile) and EXPO (AMD Extended Profiles for Overclocking) are profiles stored on compatible memory modules. Selecting one in BIOS/UEFI applies predefined memory settings, including speed, timings, and voltage. Intel describes XMP as a way to load predefined and tested profiles for compatible DDR4 or DDR5 memory through BIOS or a supported tuning application: Intel XMP overview.
Until a profile is enabled, a system may use a standard JEDEC speed supported by the platform, which can be lower than the speed printed on the memory kit. MSI describes this default behavior in its BIOS guidance. A profile can improve memory performance, but there is no universal or guaranteed performance gain; stability depends on the complete hardware configuration.
Check compatibility before enabling a profile
Before changing firmware settings, identify your motherboard or prebuilt PC model, processor, RAM generation, and memory kit model. Check the system maker’s support information and memory compatibility list. ASUS recommends using memory listed on its Qualified Vendor List (QVL); its guide also explains profile support and setup: ASUS FAQ: XMP, EXPO, DOCP, and memory setup.

- Boosts System Performance: 32GB DDR5 RAM laptop memory kit (2x16GB) that operates at 5600MHz, 5200MHz, or 4800MHz to improve multitasking and system responsiveness for smoother performance
- Accelerated gaming performance: Every millisecond gained in fast-paced gameplay counts—power through heavy workloads and benefit from versatile downclocking and higher frame rates
- Optimized DDR5 compatibility: Best for 12th Gen Intel Core and AMD Ryzen 7000 Series processors — Intel XMP 3.0 and AMD EXPO also supported on the same RAM module
- Trusted Micron Quality: Backed by 42 years of memory expertise, this DDR5 RAM is rigorously tested at both component and module levels, ensuring top performance and reliability
- ECC Type = Non-ECC, Form Factor = SODIMM, Pin Count = 262-Pin, PC Speed = PC5-44800, Voltage = 1.1V, Rank And Configuration = 1Rx8
- Confirm that the memory generation and profile are supported by your motherboard and processor, or by the prebuilt system’s manufacturer.
- Check whether your exact kit appears on the motherboard’s QVL. A listing can help establish compatibility, but does not guarantee that every system configuration will be stable.
- Consult the manual for your exact motherboard and BIOS version. The available profile names, settings, and recovery instructions vary.
XMP and EXPO are not strict Intel-only and AMD-only labels in every system. What matters is which profiles are stored on your DIMMs and what your particular CPU and motherboard support. Some firmware uses other labels—for example, DOCP or A-XMP—but those names are vendor-specific, not a promise that every profile will work across platforms. See the examples in G.SKILL’s profile setup guide.
Enable XMP or EXPO in BIOS/UEFI
- Find your system’s BIOS/UEFI entry instructions. Restart the computer and use the key or procedure documented by the PC or motherboard maker. Delete and F2 are common examples, not universal keys; MSI notes that other manufacturers may use different keys in its BIOS guidance.
- Open the memory or overclocking settings. Look for a profile control named XMP, EXPO, DOCP, A-XMP, or a similar vendor-specific label. ASUS documents an Ai Tweaker example in its memory setup FAQ; MSI’s AM5 motherboard manual documents an A-XMP/EXPO control: MSI AM5 BIOS manual. These are examples, not universal menu paths.
- Select the supported profile. If more than one profile is offered, choose a profile appropriate for your kit and platform. The board’s manual and compatibility guidance should take precedence over a generic menu example.
- Save changes and restart. Use the firmware’s save-and-exit option. For this basic setup, avoid manually changing voltage or timings: the profile supplies its own values, and manual tuning is a separate, hardware-dependent process.
Verify the RAM is running at the profile rate
After restarting, check the memory speed in BIOS/UEFI or a system-information tool. ASUS provides a post-enable frequency-check FAQ. Read the tool’s units carefully: some tools report the physical memory clock, while others report the effective DDR transfer rate, which is double the physical clock. Compare like units rather than treating those two numbers as different settings.

If the reported rate has not changed, confirm that the profile is still selected in firmware and check whether the tool is showing clock frequency or effective data rate. The exact supported speed depends on the processor, motherboard, BIOS, and memory configuration; the kit’s advertised profile is not a guarantee that every system will run it.

A profile may fail to boot or produce errors because it is an overclock and may not be stable on a particular hardware combination. If that happens, consult the motherboard or PC manual for its documented BIOS reset or CMOS-clear procedure, return settings to defaults, and review compatibility information before trying again. Do not assume every motherboard will recover automatically; ASUS includes profile-failure guidance in its memory setup FAQ.
