For gaming alone, 16GB of RAM is still adequate for many games; moving to 32GB does not guarantee higher average frame rates. The upgrade is most useful if you play while streaming or running other memory-heavy apps, or if testing shows your particular game and system are running short of memory. Before buying, check whether your PC supports an upgrade.

Does 32GB of RAM improve gaming performance?

Sometimes, but capacity is not a universal FPS setting. Intel recommends at least 16GB for modern gaming and says more memory can help when you multitask. In its 2026 tests, TechSpot found several games performed similarly with 16GB and 32GB, while some specific games and configurations showed memory-pressure effects. The results do not support a fixed frame-rate gain from doubling capacity.

Average FPS is only part of the picture. When a system is short on memory, frame times can become less consistent, which may feel like stuttering even if an average-FPS figure looks acceptable. TechSpot reported that, in its Marvel Rivals test using an 8GB graphics card, a 32GB system improved 1% lows by more than 60%. That result is specific to the game, GPU, settings, and review setup—not a prediction for other PCs. TechSpot simulated capacities with the same 64GB DDR5 kit on one Windows 11 system to reduce memory-timing differences between runs. See TechSpot’s test details.

When is 32GB worth it?

You run other apps while gaming

More capacity is most broadly useful when the game shares memory with other work. Intel names livestreaming, Discord group chat, and keeping YouTube or Twitch open as reasons to consider 32GB. The benefit is added headroom for the combined workload; it is not a guarantee that the game itself will render more frames. Intel’s guidance puts it plainly: “If you plan to do more than just gaming, consider 32GB.” Intel’s gaming RAM guidance.

Your game and settings create memory pressure

Some specific titles or configurations can benefit from more system memory. In TechSpot’s Marvel Rivals test, the 32GB and 64GB configurations used around 18GB of memory. In its Mafia: The Old Country test, the review found around 20GB of system memory was required for a smooth experience. These are observations from that review’s tests, not universal minimum requirements for either game or guarantees that every player needs 32GB.

You want more room for concurrent work

If you expect to keep several applications open during play, or use the PC for other demanding tasks, 32GB gives those workloads more room to coexist. Whether that added capacity is worth the cost depends on what you actually run and whether your current system shows memory pressure.

System RAM and graphics-card VRAM are different

System RAM is the computer’s main memory; VRAM is memory on the graphics card. They are separate resources, so a GPU with 8GB of VRAM does not mean the PC has 8GB of system RAM. Steam’s performance overlay reports physical memory and video memory separately. Steam explains how to use the in-game performance overlay.

The two can interact: in TechSpot’s tested scenario, an 8GB graphics card increased asset pressure on system memory. That is an example of one configuration, not a rule that applies to every game or GPU. If you are diagnosing a problem, look at both memory readings rather than assuming that more system RAM will solve a graphics-memory constraint.

How to tell whether your PC needs more RAM

  1. Recreate your usual session. Start the game and the applications you normally keep open, such as a browser, voice chat, recording software, or a stream.
  2. Check system memory and video memory separately. Steam’s in-game performance overlay can show both readings. Compare system-memory use with the physical memory available on your PC.
  3. Look for a pattern, not one peak. Note whether system memory approaches its limit during the parts of play where you experience stuttering or other trouble. A usage figure by itself does not prove that adding RAM will improve a particular game.
  4. Compare against relevant game tests. Results for the same title and a similar GPU or setup are more informative than a general claim about RAM. Game patches, settings, background apps, and hardware can all change the outcome.

Steam advises that if system memory is near its maximum, closing other applications or adding system RAM may help. Its overlay can also help distinguish high system-memory use from high video-memory use. Steam’s overlay instructions.

Can more RAM make games load faster?

Windows can cache frequently used files when sufficient memory is available, which Steam says may make levels load and relaunch faster. That supports a possible caching benefit, not a promise that upgrading from 16GB to 32GB will shorten loading times in every game. Steam’s hardware troubleshooting guidance.

Check compatibility before upgrading

Do not assume a 32GB kit will fit or work in every PC. Confirm your system’s supported memory generation, form factor, maximum capacity, available slots, and whether its RAM can be upgraded. Desktops commonly use DIMMs; laptops commonly use smaller SO-DIMMs, and some laptop memory is soldered in place rather than intended for replacement. Intel’s guide covers memory form factors and upgrade considerations.

  • Check the PC or motherboard documentation for supported memory type and capacity.
  • Verify the number of memory slots and whether any are already occupied.
  • For a laptop, confirm whether memory is replaceable or soldered.
  • Compare the cost of a compatible 32GB kit with the benefit you expect from your workload; prices vary, and there is no universal value without a specific system and kit.

Quick decision guide

How you use the PC Practical choice
You mainly play games and do not see memory pressure 16GB can be adequate for many games; capacity alone does not promise higher average FPS.
You game with a stream, voice chat, browser tabs, or other demanding apps 32GB is worth considering for additional headroom.
A particular game shows memory pressure or poor frame pacing Check game- and system-specific evidence, along with VRAM use, before deciding that more system RAM is the fix.
Your PC has limited slots, a capacity limit, or soldered memory Check documentation before shopping; an upgrade may be limited or unavailable.

No current RAM prices or kit compatibility for an individual PC are established here, so compare actual compatible options only after checking your system’s limits.
