To fix low FPS or stuttering in Monster Hunter Wilds on PC, first check the game’s current update notes, then work through drivers, GPU and power settings, background apps, game files, graphics settings, and heat—in that order. Change one thing at a time and test in the same area so you can tell whether it helped. The steps below are for the Steam/Windows version; console menus and troubleshooting differ.

Start by checking the game version and where performance drops

Record the game version and the location where the problem occurs—such as Base Camp, the Grand Hub, or during a hunt. Also note whether you are seeing persistently low FPS, brief stutters, crashes, visual problems, or input delay. Different symptoms can have different causes.

Check Capcom’s current Monster Hunter Wilds update notes and support information before relying on an older workaround. For example, Capcom’s January 28, 2026 notes for Steam update Ver. 1.040.03.01 documented CPU/GPU processing changes and a fix for extra CPU load near the Support Desk in Base Camp and the Grand Hub. Capcom said claimed-content checks could lower FPS there, with the effect varying by unclaimed content and CPU performance; it also stated that the number of DLCs owned did not cause the issue. That fix is a dated example, not evidence that every current performance problem has the same cause.

These are the examples and targets on Steam’s Monster Hunter Wilds technical-support page, accessed in 2026. They do not guarantee a particular result, establish how a different configuration will perform, or mean a PC below the listed examples cannot launch the game. The listed platform requirements include 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11 and DirectX 12.

Before considering a component change, note your exact CPU and GPU, GPU VRAM, system RAM, graphics-driver version, Windows version, and display resolution and refresh rate. These details help distinguish a hardware limit from a software or configuration issue.

Update drivers and select the right GPU and power mode

  1. Update the graphics driver. Get the current driver guidance from Capcom’s support notes and the relevant GPU manufacturer. Capcom’s January 2026 update included specific NVIDIA and AMD driver versions, but those recommendations were tied to that update and should not be treated as current advice. Restart Windows after installing a driver.
  2. Choose the discrete GPU on a dual-GPU laptop. In Windows, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics, select or add the game, choose Options, and set it to High performance. Labels and menus can vary by Windows build and laptop manufacturer.
  3. Check laptop power. Connect the charger and check Windows and manufacturer power settings. A laptop running on battery or a low-power profile may not behave like it does when plugged in.

Capcom’s official troubleshooting and issue-reporting thread recommends updating graphics drivers and checking GPU selection and power configuration.

Test whether background apps are contributing

Close resource-heavy applications, especially recording tools and overlays, then test the same location again. Capcom’s official Steam troubleshooting guidance includes checking that other applications are not running. Treat this as a diagnostic: close one category at a time, compare the result, and reopen apps afterward if performance is unchanged. This helps identify a relationship instead of assuming every overlay or background app is the cause.

Verify the game files and handle shader caches carefully

  1. In Steam, open Library, right-click Monster Hunter Wilds, and choose Properties.
  2. Open Installed Files and select Verify integrity of game files. Steam checks the installation and replaces files it finds missing or damaged.
  3. If you are troubleshooting a relevant graphical issue, Capcom also lists deleting the game-generated shader.cache and shader.cache2 files as an option. Use this for the issues it addresses, not as a guaranteed FPS fix; the game may rebuild shaders afterward.

File verification and cache removal address different possibilities. Capcom’s guidance does not establish that deleting shader caches fixes all stuttering.

Lower graphics settings for unstable frame rates

If the frame rate fluctuates or remains unstable, open the game’s Graphics settings and try a lower preset, such as Low or Medium. Make one reversible change, test in the same scene, and note the result before changing more settings. Capcom recommends lowering the preset, but its guidance does not provide a controlled FPS gain for an individual PC.

If Frame Generation is unavailable

Capcom’s troubleshooting guidance says to enable Windows GPU scheduling and update the graphics driver if needed. In Windows, search Settings for Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling and enable it if the option is available; its location and availability vary by Windows version and graphics hardware. These steps address Frame Generation availability specifically. Support and results depend on the hardware and setup.

If Frame Generation causes input delay or worse performance

Capcom says players experiencing input delay or performance degradation while using Frame Generation should try turning off V-Sync in the game’s Display options. Compare with the same scene and input conditions. This is a symptom-specific check, not a universal low-FPS remedy.

Check heat and stability

Capcom warns that excessive heat can make game operation unstable. Place a desktop tower or laptop where its vents have room to breathe, and check temperatures with monitoring software from your hardware manufacturer if needed. Capcom also notes that lowering graphics settings and limiting the frame rate may reduce heat. The cited guidance does not establish a temperature threshold or show that a new cooler is necessary.

Use the benchmark as a comparison, not a guarantee

Capcom’s benchmark is intended to help players assess how their PC handles the game, but a benchmark result is not a promise of identical performance during every hunt or in every scene. Use it alongside repeatable in-game testing: compare the same location, settings, and resolution after each change. The benchmark’s purpose is described in Capcom’s announcement that the Monster Hunter Wilds benchmark is available.

When to contact Capcom support

If the issue persists after these checks, send Capcom a report with enough detail to identify your configuration and reproduce the symptom. Include:

  • CPU model and PC or laptop model
  • GPU model and VRAM
  • Graphics-driver version and system memory
  • Windows version
  • Security software
  • Monitor model or models
  • Game version, the location where the issue occurs, and a clear description of the symptom

Capcom lists system and display details in its official issue-reporting guidance. Provide the details requested there when submitting a report.

Should you upgrade your PC?

Do not buy a CPU, GPU, more RAM, a cooler, or an SSD solely because FPS is low. The Steam listing specifies an SSD as a requirement, but that does not establish that buying a different SSD will improve frame rate. First identify a likely limit by comparing your exact hardware with the game’s published examples and checking whether a software, power, background-load, or heat issue explains the symptom. A hardware upgrade is worth evaluating only when evidence points to a matching bottleneck; the published requirements alone do not rank upgrade options.
