- Exploration: What makes you curious to stray from the route, and what might you discover?
- Autonomy: Can you choose the order, approach, or solution to a challenge?
- Traversal: What does getting around feel like, and which movement options define it?
- Primary activity: Will most of your time go to discovering, fighting, role-playing, surviving, or following a story?
- Setting and tone: Are you drawn to a fantasy landscape, a science-fiction city, or a generated universe?
Use those questions to match a game to the experience you want. A public discussion offers one illustrative way to describe that preference: wanting an open world that feels designed around exploration and world-building, rather than having those elements feel tacked on. That comment is an individual example, not evidence of what players generally prefer.

For discovery and exploration: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Nintendo frames Breath of the Wild around discovery, exploration, and adventure. It is a natural option if the main appeal is investigating a world and seeing where curiosity leads, rather than choosing a game primarily for a city setting or survival loop. Bandai Namco identifies Elden Ring as an open-world game and emphasizes exploration, discovery, and RPG freedom. Choose it if you want roaming and discovery alongside dangerous combat encounters. Its combat is a meaningful part of the proposition, so it is not the recommendation here for someone seeking a relaxing or easygoing alternative.

For a choice-driven science-fiction city: Cyberpunk 2077
Cyberpunk 2077 centers on Night City, a vast urban setting where CD PROJEKT RED says player choices shape the story and the people around the player. It suits someone drawn to a dense science-fiction city and narrative decisions. It remains a city-based action-adventure, however, so a different setting or stronger story emphasis does not mean every broad genre element will feel unfamiliar.

This is the option for players more interested in space exploration and survival systems than in a single grounded city. Hello Games uses “infinite” in its own description; treat that as the developer’s framing, not a literal measurable quantity.

Make the choice without assuming every open world plays alike
- Pick your main activity. Decide whether discovery, combat, story choices, or survival is the experience you want most.
- Check the setting. Choose between a fantasy world, a science-fiction city, and a procedurally generated universe based on where you want to spend time.
- Consider the friction you welcome. If dangerous encounters are part of the appeal, Elden Ring fits that profile; if you want survival to accompany exploration, No Man’s Sky fits the official descriptions.
- Confirm platform and edition. Official listings can differ by platform, region, and edition. In particular, Nintendo describes an upgraded Breath of the Wild version for Nintendo Switch 2 and lists No Man’s Sky for Switch; check the listing that matches your system before buying.
